Roger Ballen, photographs series book: "Roger the Rat" Roger the rat movie Roger Ballen created a character called Roger the Rat, creating and documenting an archetypal half-man, half-rat character who lives an isolated life on the margins of mainstream society. In this film we follow Roger the Rat as he leaves his narrow shanty to travel to a cemetery full of discarded mannequins, which he takes to his house to dress and communicate with. At first, Roger the Rat is delighted with his new companions, since he can dress them, talk to them, and share his feelings. However, as time goes by, he becomes increasingly frustrated with his impassiveness, leading to outbreaks of violent and irrational behavior. Roger the Rat expresses the corrosive effects of loneliness, isolation, and the suffocating overwhelm in small spaces caused by isolation on the human mind. Roger Ballen Throughout his career, Roger Ballen has pursued a singular artistic goal: to give expression to the human psyche and visually explore the hidden forces that shape who we are. In these sixty black and white photographs, Ballen creates a character, Roger the Rat. Here, Ballen reveals a selection of stunning photographs, completely different from his previous work, but still possessing the unmistakable Ballenesque aesthetic. Produced in Johannesburg between 2015 and 2020, Ballen creates and documents a half-human, half-rat creature that lives an isolated life outside of mainstream society. The name ‘Inside Out’ reflects the idea that the Centre’s exhibitions will encourage introspection, and the design of the building is inspired by the same aim. Raw concrete is used on the interior and exterior surfaces of the building, the latter of which conceals the entrance that opens into a breathtaking, double-volume, naturally lit space. “I sometimes think that the building looks like it has been turned ‘inside out’,” comments Ballen, who worked closely with local architect Joe van Rooyen of JVR Architects to create a landmark building. #insideoutcentreforthearts #visi #jvrarchitects #joevanrooyen #rogerballen

Happy Birthday @rogerballen Born in New York on April 11, 1950, Roger Ballen has been based in Johannesburg, South Africa since the early 1980s. The photographer studied psychology at the University of California, and later his PhD at the Colorado School of Mines, specialising in Mineral Economics. Ballen was originally drawn to South Africa to work as a geologist, but his enthusiasm for photography strengthened, and he has been taking images there for more than thirty years. Roger Ballen has been represented by Hamiltons Gallery for many years, and his work blends performance, immersion and documentary styles of photography, disturbing the viewer’s sense of reality. In 2023 Ballen opened an Art Centre in Johannesburg called the Inside Out Centre for Arts, providing an educational facility but also an active art studio space to the South African capital. Roger Ballen e Joel-Peter Witkin" - Mauro Zanchi I rapporti di vicinanza tra opere di Joel Peter Witkin e quelle di Roger Ballen innescano altre fosche alterità che creano dissonanze accordate. L’atmosfera di una fotografia penetra nell’altra che è posta accanto, anche a distanza di migliaia di chilometri e di anni. Il filo che lega le immagini dei due artisti statunitensi è una relazione di dettagli e di cortocircuiti. Si mette in azione qualcosa di simile a quello che accadeva nelle lezioni iconologiche di fine Ottocento, dove nelle università tedesche di storia dell’arte venivano mostrate parentele semantiche tra due o più opere attraverso una proiezione doppia di diapositive. I first fell in love with Ballen’s work in London sometime around the mid-2010s. Ballen’s art is transdisciplinary, merging visual art, theatre, film, and installation, with themes of psychology, biology and surrealism. Often featuring marginalised (often mutated) subjects in strange settings, the grotesque is what draws me to Ballen, though I recognise its flaws. Sabato 16 marzo è stata inaugurata la mostra “The Uncanny Lens / La Lente Inquietante” dedicata ai lavori fotografici di Roger Ballen e Joel-Peter Witkin, presso @castel_ivano. Il Museo era presente con una piccola ma significativa sezione che illustra il significato degli oggetti della devozione popolare che affollano lo spazio pubblico, quello privato e persino quello intimo. Con noi c'era anche la @fondazione_sergio_poggianella con alcuni reperti della loro collezione di arte sciamanica eurasiatica. ROGER BALLEN – JOEL-PETER WITKIN Presents 60 photographic works by Roger Ballen and Joel-Peter Witkin The first exhibition in Italy as part of an international tour to be held at the medieval setting of CastelIvano, in Trentino, Italy 16 March - 13 April 2024 The Uncanny Lens / La Lenta Inquietante is an exhibition aimed at showcasing the photographic works of two renowned artistic figures, Hamiltons-represented artist Roger Ballen, and Joel-Peter Witkin. Both artists are known for their distinctive and unconventional approached to black-and-white photography, the human condition, the human psyche and the grotesque. The exhibition seeks to encourage an exploration of the unconscious mind through photography and, by presenting a selection of these works side-by-side, offers a deepened and more nuanced appreciation for these artists’ contribution to Surrealism and to the history of photography. The project reveals a profound dialogue established over the years between the two artists. In the juxtaposition of their photographs, we gain a clearer understanding of their unique aesthetic through their stylistic and iconographic references to myth and fantasy. Organised by the Chirone culture association under the artistic direction by Fulvio de Pellegrin and Paolo Dolzan, who assigned the curatorship of the exhibition to Fortunato d’Amico.
