“Joey and Jerry, 2015 is significant as it depicts the artist as a boy standing with his brother Joel-Peter. The two brothers grew up to be successful artists, a painter and a photographer. As every year, art will be in the spotlight in Brussels at the end of April. The Galerie de la Béraudière fits into this lively artistic and cultural moment with an exhibition dedicated to photography. On display are a selection of portraits by French photographer Ann Ray, renowned for her captivating and exciting work in fashion, dance and portrait photography. Some of them are unique pieces, created with complex photographic and pictorial techniques that are no longer in use. 🖌️Artista aportado por María Jesús Silvente, profesora de la UMA 📸 Joel-Peter Witkin @joelpeterwitkinstudio , un artista en el que influyó Pablo Picasso, es un fotógrafo contemporáneo nacido en 1939 en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Su trabajo se caracteriza por una estética surrealista y provocativa que desafía las convenciones sociales y estéticas. Witkin comenzó su carrera artística en la década de 1960, cuyo particular estilo se gestó a partir de su experiencia personal y su formación en la guerra de Vietnam como fotógrafo médico, que se basa en la manipulación de sus sujetos y la creación de composiciones visuales inquietantes. A menudo utiliza personas con discapacidades físicas o mentales y cadáveres para crear imágenes que desafían las nociones convencionales de la belleza, como podemos ver en la obra “El Beso”, la cual se trata del rostro cortado de un hombre de edad avanzada dispuesto de tal forma que da la falsa imagen de dos personas besandose. Esta fotografía nos recuerda al cubismo de Picasso, ya que se retrata un mismo rostro desde distintos puntos de vista. Además, en algunas de sus fotografías, Witkin combina elementos de la historia del arte, el simbolismo religioso y la iconografía cultural para crear imágenes cargadas de significado y misterio. Esto sucede en la obra “Las meninas”, la cual es una reinterpretación fotográfica del famoso cuadro de Velázquez, pero con un enfoque surrealista y perturbador. En esta fotografía podemos ver también claramente la influencia de Picasso en la figura de la derecha, la cual recuerda a algunas de las figuras monstruosas que retrataba el pintor en obras como el “Guernica”. ¿Interesad@ en conocer más artistas? Our launch issue. We were still feeling our way here, but we were brazen enough to kick things off with LENIN on the cover and Horst Wackerbarth’s portrait of Paul Tibbets, the pilot of Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima. The brilliant, provocateur Joel Peter Witkin also featured, courtesy of the Texbrauns - who were Willy Moser’s art dealers in Paris. We caught the tail end of this world, where you could still run into Madame Man Ray behind her golden glasses, chatting with Andre Puttman or Jaques Grange (at a Vernissage that you’d read about on an affiche on the wall, outside the toilets, in a brasserie somewhere). You might chat with someone who knew Picasso in the Cafe des Arts, and they’d send you up some crooked stairs into the ‘ter’ of a hidden ‘hotel’ in the Marais, clutching your film roles, to hand them over to ‘the best Labor Noir et Blanc du Mond’. "Proiezioni inquietanti. Roger Ballen e Joel-Peter Witkin" - Mauro Zanchi I rapporti di vicinanza tra opere di Joel Peter Witkin e quelle di Roger Ballen innescano altre fosche alterità che creano dissonanze accordate. L’atmosfera di una fotografia penetra nell’altra che è posta accanto, anche a distanza di migliaia di chilometri e di anni. Il filo che lega le immagini dei due artisti statunitensi è una relazione di dettagli e di cortocircuiti. Si mette in azione qualcosa di simile a quello che accadeva nelle lezioni iconologiche di fine Ottocento, dove nelle università tedesche di storia dell’arte venivano mostrate parentele semantiche tra due o più opere attraverso una proiezione doppia di diapositive. Sabato 16 marzo è stata inaugurata la mostra “The Uncanny Lens / La Lente Inquietante” dedicata ai lavori fotografici di Roger Ballen e Joel-Peter Witkin, presso @castel_ivano. Il Museo era presente con una piccola ma significativa sezione che illustra il significato degli oggetti della devozione popolare che affollano lo spazio pubblico, quello privato e persino quello intimo.
