Backpacking in South-East Asia ๐๐ฃ Sapa ๐ป๐ณ Lei รจ Xuan, che in vietnamita significa "primavera". ร una donna di trent'anni che vive in un villaggio del Vietnam settentrionale, nella regione di Sapa. Fa parte della tribรน degli Dzao rossi, una minoranza etnica che si รจ insediata migliaia di anni fa sulle montagne e tuttora le abita, vivendo principalmente di agricoltura di sostentamento. Ci racconta la sua storia, mentre avanziamo nella nebbia della giungla e affondiamo gli scarponi nel fango delle risaie. Xuan nasce in una famiglia estremamente povera, motivo per cui non andrร mai a scuola. Impara quindi a usare YouTube e qui, ostinatamente, si impegna a imparare l'inglese in modo da potere, un giorno, lavorare nel turismo. Al rientro nel suo villaggio rifiuta un matrimonio combinato con un ragazzo poco piรน grande di lei. Di lรฌ a poco conosce Choi, un giovane schivo e timido con cui c'รจ subito intesa. Ha appena diciassette anni quando comunica alla sua famiglia che ha intenzione di sposarsi. La madre รจ contrariata: Choi (che, ironia della sorte, in vietnamita significa "ricco") viene da una famiglia povera e non potrร darle alcun futuro. The first part of our trekking tour ๐ฅพ that started in Sa Pa ๐ป๐ณ ended in this wooden hut, where we spent the night in about 1500 m above sea level shrouded in fog โฐ Our hosts were of the Red Dzao ethnic group from Tแบฃ Phรฌn village. Even if you could hear the unfamiliar sounds of wild animals ๐ roaming around the hut at night, I can hardly remember a more restful sleep ๐ค

Strobilanthes Cusia with an alias name - Assam Indigo. Aside from being known as a traditional medicinal plant It is planted as a dye plant in the mountains of northern Vietnam. The leaves contain 0.4-1.3% indican, which can be hydrolized and oxidized to indigo-blue. Leaves are astringent and diuretic, and have lithotriptic properties. Plants can be propagated by root cuttings, and they are pruned 2 or 3 times a year. The twigs are used to prepare a dark blue dye for dyeing cloth. - story time for #mountainday I haven't reached the summit of too many mountains above 10-14k feet. but every time, halfway through the arduous journey, I wonder "why am I doing this"? rock and ice is so damn humbling. walking becomes work. and there is the constant feeling of not belonging. where earth meets the sky is sacred to mountain people, rooted in co-existence with the Mother. they graze their cattle, grow rice at her foothills, lead tourists to her summit. in North Vietnam, I saw Hmong villagers and babies at 10k feet, laughing with ease, where I struggled to stand after a windy, sleepless night. my guide Su, an invisibly strong Sa Pa native, carried three packs the size of mine and still moved faster. me, a clueless visitor in their cloud realm. at the peak, the Mother, Buddha, and Bodhisattva can be felt everywhere. for a moment, a human could feel like a rightful speck at the edge of creation. fear, bliss, curiosity, woe, privilege - it all came to me in a flood. when I came down Phan Xi Pang, it was with humility. painfully aware of my weaknesses, my little feet, and the mercy of the mountain who let me pass and opened my eyes. back in town, I sat by a Hmong child in the bus station and marveled at her cold, rosy cheeks while she puzzled over my brown ones. I bought a postcard she offered - a picture of Phan Xi Pang. the siren call for tourists, and the provider for her people. I wondered if I'd ever venture up there again. I wondered if it would be respectful. "why?" why, if only for a moment, wouldn't a human want to feel so small?

I was brought to this village to attend an after burial of a loved one that had passed away. It is tradition for Hmong to celebrate in the successful send off for three or more days which does involves alot of rice spirits or happy water as Sy calls it. The Hmong women add rice spirits to their indigo vats and so joke that an indigo vat is also like the drinking man. Layered with indigo cloth was not what got me so happy. Hemp is grown in house hold gardens. It's important to harvest on a sunny day so the freshly cut stems do not get wet because if they are damp it can make the fibres break during processing. Its truly a wonder fibre as its UV, mold and water resistant. It also wears beautifully as it becomes softer with time as well as being extremely durable.
