After touring the historic district, birthplace of Hakata-ori and udon, we visited Nishimura Orimono, the oldest maker of the densely woven silk textile Hakata-ori. Also, we got to see a special demonstration of “tsumami” dye for Kurume Kasuri at @takumi_gallery at Across Fukuoka! Today we visited @island_at_the_edge in Edinbane to learn about crofting life and how fleeces are processed to produce genuine Isle of Skye yarn. Yasmin, the owner, didn’t just share her knowledge and stories with us, but she also spoiled us with the most delicious home-baked cakes! Then we moved on to Skye Skyns, Scotland’s only remaining woolskin tannery. Block print fun in Jaipur. I love visiting artisans and learning about traditional crafts as part of travel but I don’t include many workshops in our tours. Why? Because they are often time consuming, with tricky techniques that are so complicated guests leave frustrated and with half finished projects. On my ‘fake India tour’ we block printed a piece of muslin which was completely useless. I threw it in the bin. 🤦♀️ Our block print workshop in Jaipur is always on our itineraries as it ticks all the boxes. ✅ quality - you print a bag and tea towel ✅ quick - just an hour and a half including delicious chai and biscuits ✅ educational - wonderful teachers and a demo video ✅ supports local communities in rural India After the workshop, we visit the block carvers in a nearby street to learn more about the process and then visit a paper factory which recycles fabric scraps! Only 3 ‘studio days’ here in Japan, and yet I’ve made SO MUCH progress on this at the airport, on the bus, & on the train. 🪡🧵 I made the green Chiku-Chiku in Takako’s class at the @wmquiltfiberarts, and I made the sashiko hemp leaves with a pattern from @snugglymonkey, but everything else has happened since the 4th when this incredible trip began. Today was great fun as my group and I explored the breathtaking Amber Fort. Its stunning frescoes and dazzling mirrors never fail to mesmerise. The Ganesh Pol gate adorned with vegetable dye florals? Completely inspiring every single time! Next, we ventured to the iconic City Palace, now even more spectacular after its recent painting restorations. In a light snow flurry, five of us walked up through the torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine. It was magical. Once we descended, we stumbled upon Vermillion. Michael and I had also visited this artisan coffee shop on the first day it opened, almost ten years ago. They still sold the same torii-and-fox patterned tenugui. More magic! A little chilled, we wanted to take a taxi back to the hotel. But there were too many of us. Amazingly there was a vacant taxi-van at the corner of the main street. Here’s a final peek into one day with @anadelcamino and @carolynkallenborn on their upcoming trip to Oaxaca happening this May (15-22)! You will travel into the Sierra Norte, stop for a regional breakfast in Cuajimoloyas, and then continue to the silk-making village of San Pedro Cajonos to visit the new, state-of-the-art Sanctuario de Gusano de Seda (Silkworm Sanctuary). You will meet artists who guide you through the silk-making process, from cultivating the worms to spinning and weaving on backstrap looms, as well as the intricate knotwork used to finish their gorgeous handmade scarves and garments. Master weaver Moisés Martinez will lead the group into his indigo-dyeing workshop using handspun silk threads from the village. Each participant will receive 15 grams of handspun silk thread to dye and take home. After the workshop, you will all talk with Moises and the other artisans about how they work in this new communal space and the impact of silk production on their community. Then, you return to Oaxaca City for another evening of exploration. This is just one of the seven vibrant days you will experience.
