These iconic birds are Red Listed and we need to protect their nesting sites or provide them with new ones. All new builds need a swift brick - they are cheap and easy to install and can give a swift a place to breed. @michael.gove.surreyheath has had the opportunity to make this mandatory - not quite sure why he has refused thus far. These amazing birds only land to breed and juveniles don’t land for their first 3 years. Swifts fly to and from Africa every year. A beautiful swift, now recovering after I found it at the side of the road after a heavy downpour. They are returning now to England after their winter in Africa - hoping to find their nesting sites have not been blocked by plastic solutions boards or new roofs. They do nit easily find new nesting spots and will often kill themselves battering against a brick wall. #swifts #swiftboxes #savetheswifts #migrants #birds
Yesterday I saw, and then heard, swifts for the first time this year. Visiting the UK each summer, they fly 3,400 miles from Africa. Wheeling, swooping, darting, they do almost everything on the wing and I find their speed of movement - and distinctive screeching call - beyond words. The poem is, ironically, an attempt to express that sentiment through words. More importantly, swifts are under serious threat - they nest in tiny gaps in old buildings. But as these are renovated, the gaps are closed up and so swifts lose their nesting sites (which they return to year after year). Using a swift brick in all new builds is a simple way to counteract their drop in numbers (down 60% between 1995 and 2020) but as it stands the government are refusing to make this simple and effective measure compulsory. @writerhannahbt is doing some amazing campaigning to overturn this, but you can also write to Rishi Sunak - who apparently dislikes the idea of swift bricks (of course he does) - to ask him to overturn the decision. #savetheswifts #nedvesseywriting #naturewriting #thefeatherspeech

I spent the afternoon of Valentine’s Day posting love letters to my neighbours (or were they to the swifts?) to ask them if they’d be up for putting a free nesting box on their house. 📤 When I moved to Clevedon just over a year ago, I was verrrry excited to see swifts arriving in the late spring, having lived in Bristol for 10 years and not had them sweeping and screaming over the city’s skies (which has apparently lost 96% of its swifts). But it also seemed like there weren’t many of them here. Fast-forward to this year and I came across these posters (in the photo) in a local park, got in touch, and met the fabulous @helenwilderwood from Clevedon Swifts. My flat isn’t a goer (swifts need a clear space to swoop out of the best!) so she sorted me out with a handful of posters to find them another home! I wrote a letter to go with them, and I’m going to try to get as many people on my street to get a box put up as I can!🏠 Why? Well swifts are pretty magnificent. And massively in decline due to loss of habitat (hence the nest boxes!) and loss of insects. Their numbers have plummeted by 50% since the 90’s, and on that trajectory could be gone by 2050. Given they’ve been around for 50 million years (🤯) I’d really love to see their numbers stabilising and picking up! 📈 So! Wanna help? Got a roof? Find a local campaign where you live (there will be one - comment below if you can’t find one!), literally type [your town/city] swifts into @ecosia and you’ll find a group. Then either ask for a swift box, donate some cash, or an afternoon of your time, go to an event, or share their work with the world. 📣 And check out swiftmapper.org.uk to see where they’ve been seen and where they’re nesting near you. Let me introduce you to ‘The Swifts’. They are hand-made with two layers of the thickest Bockingford Watercolour card with collaged wing and eye details, acrylic paint textures and acrylic varnished 3 times. As hanging decorations and brooches. They take a good while to (lovingly) make so the price takes that into consideration, and I don’t make them to order, they just fly in and out as fast or slow as they can. I will be mainly selling them at my markets and fairs, occasionally in my website shop or by request after posting. I love having them hanging in my window till they fly away! Today I’m going to the House of Parliament to watch the debate over the inclusion of Swift Bricks into new houses. I was at the launch of the campaign when @writerhannahbt delivered #thefeatherspeech and helped promote the petition that received over 100,000 signatures, we’ve added a Swift box to our house just outside my bedroom window, last week I spent the evening of my birthday watching Swifts soar over the Cambridge Colleges and I’ve been watching the Swifts at @wildlifebcn #trumpingtonmeadowsnaturereserve in their nest box. Happy World Swift Day from the South Devon AONB team! 🦅🌿 These distinctive birds, coloured a plain sooty brown with a white throat, spend practically their entire lives in the air. They mate, eat, sleep and bathe in the air, some spending as long as ten months without landing! 🐦🐦 These are also very fast birds, and considered one of the fastest in the United Kingdom with a top speed of 69.3mph in flight. Their habitat is generally in coastal rocky sites, such as sea cliffs, caves and crags as well as hollow trees and other birds’ nests! However, in recent years, they have started nesting in buildings. 🏡 Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction, modernisation of buildings and pesticide use, these birds have become increasingly under threat. MY SWIFTS ARE BACK!!! Gaz here & just thought I’d pop on here(well all our socials TBF) and share my utter joy and excitement about the swifts that having returned from their long journey from Africa chose to again bunker down and call the eaves of my house-home, well until they scoot back off for a warmer climate at around the end of July early august but I’ll still take every precious moment of it! We have been making lots of swift boxes for North Tawton town in West Devon. "Red is the highest conservation priority, with species on this list needing urgent action. Species on this list, such as swifts, are globally threatened, with big declines in breeding populations and ranges. That’s why swifts urgently need our help” ‘Over the years the town has seen a huge decline in the visiting Swifts, Swallows and House Martins for a few obvious reasons mostly the lack of suitable nesting spaces and habitat and more the perilous migrating journey to the UK’ ‘Now there is a collaboration of people involving residents who has set up the project, North tawton Town Council and Made -Well CIC who are making the boxes. When bird lovers in Winchcombe decided to give the town’s swift population extra support, they turned to us for help. The UK’s swift population has dropped by 60% in the past 25 years, meaning the British Trust for Ornithology has designated them a red-listed species, in need of urgent action. One of the reasons for their decline is the loss of swift nesting sites in older buildings. Unlike other birds, such as the sparrow and starling, the swift nests in the nooks and crannies within the roofs and walls of buildings. As homes are modernised and repaired, nesting opportunities for swifts become rarer. That’s why the Winchcombe Swift Support Group (WSSG) have made 40 nesting boxes – and members of our Evesham team volunteered to place them on 26 of the town’s buildings ready for the birds’ arrival at the start of summer. https://bit.ly/396wgPs

Die langstreckenziehenden Schwalben und Mauersegler kommen aus ihren Winterquartieren südlich der Sahara zurück! Als Kulturfolger nisten sie auch in unseren Städten - dort, wo sie noch geeignete Brutmöglichkeiten finden. Am 1921 errichteten Haus in der Preußischen Straße 11 in Dortmund-Eving brüten ostwärts seit jeher Mauersegler und seit einigen Jahren nordwärts auch Mehlschwalben. Bei einer behutsamen Sanierung im Jahr 2006 hatte die umsichtige Besitzerin veranlasst, dass ein ausreichender Abstand zwischen Regenrinne und Traufkasten (mindestens 40 mm) den Vögeln erlaubt, unter den vordersten Dachpfannen hindurch zu schlüpfen und Nester anzulegen. Nun bat sie den NABU Dortmund um zusätzliche Nisthilfen, um die Zahl der Brutpaare dieser recht selten gewordenen Insektenjäger vielleicht zu erhöhen. So montierten wir am 21. März 2022 in rund sechs Meter Höhe zwei Paare künstliche Mehlschwalbennester und zwei Holzbeton-Mauerseglerkästen. Das Arbeiten in dieser Höhe ist sehr zeitaufwendig. Alle Arbeitsschritte müssen zuvor am Boden sorgfältig geplant werden und oben auf der Leiter ist volle Konzentration angesagt. - Nun hoffen wir auf erfolgreiche Vergrößerung der bisherigen Mini-Kolonien. Recently I’ve started volunteering with Bolton and Bury Swifts, learning about these incredible birds, feeding them and releasing those that are ready to migrate. Swifts are notoriously difficult to look after when they get near to release, refusing to eat and dropping weight very quickly - many wildlife sanctuaries can’t provide adequate care for them but people like Louise dedicate themselves specifically to this species for weeks at a time, feeding them 8 times a day on a diet of wax worms, crickets and bee larvae to maintain a healthy weight. When I started volunteering there were 12 birds in her care but after 9 successful releases we are now down to 3! Massive thanks to the kids of Muirhouse and @northedinarts who got stuck into this mural based on the migration of Swifts, the team absolutely smashed it! The mural was created over 4 workshops where the primary school pupils learned how to cut there own stencils and use spray paint to apply them to the wall as well as fill in some of the main elements of the design. The mural was funded by the @rspb_love_nature as part of a trail around Edinburgh. The mural depicts the incredible 6000 mile journey these birds make every year, where they eat, sleep and mate all on the wing, only ever landing to build a nest and raise their young Unfortunately the Swift's are In decline due to loss of habitat and the decline of the insect population they depend upon. Might try and make some swift nesting boxes as the next stage. Update on our Swift project: Swifts will only roost in a nest box for the first year and if we are lucky will nest in the box the year after. So it may take some years before we have an uptake on most nest boxes. However we saw six swifts circling Weaver Sq two weeks ago. Most likely seen early morning or late evening. Here is what they sound like if you are near the square keep an ear out. Dont get mixed up by the sound coming from the sound box at the libary that is there to encourage the swifts to the boxes. These little Chimney Swifts are hungry hippos. They consume only insects, and a lot of them!
