Brilliant morning at The Great Fen for #internationaldawnchorusday - we set off at 5.30 with Henry Stanier who is the @wildlifebcn Monitoring and Research Officer for the Great Fen. We were surrounded by singing birds immediately, with Cuckoo a constant sound and so many others from Wrens, Blackbirds and Robins to Garden, Cetti’s, Grasshopper and Sedge Warblers and also Common Tern, Canada Geese and the boom of a distant Bittern! It wasn’t just birds though, Butterflies, Dragonflies, Damselflies and Water Beetles were spotted as the weather warmed up. Can’t wait for next month’s EcoTour around the whole reserve. #dawnchorus #dawnchorusday #greatfen #naturetastic @thewildlifetrusts

Just got from an outstanding evening with @ajaytegala for the launch of his second book. Hosted at @wickenfennt the day after their 125th Anniversary, Ajay told us some stories about Wicken and his time there, then we explored some of the fen. We heard Sedge and Grasshopper Warblers and overhead Swifts and Swallows soared majestically! I’m really looking forward to reading Wetland Diaries and learning more about life as a ranger in the fens. You’re a legend too, Ajay! #booklaunch #wickenfen #naturetastic #ajaytegala @thehistorypresslocal @nationaltrust

Last July we found an ill Tawny Owl who needed help from @theraptorfoundation - they helped get the Owl better and then we released it back where it was found a few weeks later. (Pic 6) Yesterday, I was able to go back and join their Junior Keeper for a Day. While I was there we helped by mucking out the Falcon House and Buzzard lawn, preparing food for the flying display birds and feeding some of the birds and animals in the hospital wing. In the afternoon I helped with the flying displays, holding a Barn Owl, Harris Hawk and Eagle Owl. 🦉 It was an awesome experience and it was great to see the work they do looking after and rehabilitating the birds. It was great to improve my knowledge of these amazing birds and the work rescue centres do! 🦅 🏥 A good excuse to wear my @wildlifetrusts owl t-shirt too!! #naturetasticwithhenry #naturetastic #raptorfoundation #raptorfoundationcambridge #theraptorfoundation #juniorkeeper #juniorkeeperexperience #owls #eagles #raptors #birdsofprey #birdsofinstagram #biaza @officialbiaza

Three years ago today, #earthoptimismcambridge started and my first video made as the Junior Wildlife Ambassador for @wildlifebcn was published as part of the event. Naturetastic | Gardening for a Wilder Future | Wildlife Trust BCN and Earth Optimism Cambridge https://youtu.be/8YCAB6wSeiI ‘Gardening for a Wilder Future’ was all about the difference we can make in our own outside spaces - however big or small. Earth Optimism Cambridge is part of a worldwide movement aimed at fundamentally shifting how we frame the environmental narrative, from one of doom and gloom to one focused on solutions and success. Earth Optimism has emerged from two key realisations: that fear without hope leads to apathy rather than action, and that conservation successes are numerous but largely invisible to the general public. As part of the family-focused Solutions Fair, I made this video for the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire showing will how each of us can make a difference in our everyday lives. This video is all about making our gardens part of the Nature Recovery Network, and how gardens - or even window boxes - contribute to a Wilder Future. #naturetasticwithhenry #naturetastic #earthoptimism #TBT #throwbacktuesday #wildlifetrust #wildlifebcn #bedfordshire #cambridgeshire #northamptonshire #gardening #wilder #nomowmay #letitgrow #wildgardening #hedgehogs #hedgehoghighway #wilderfuture

Brilliant visit to @rspb Burton Mere Wetlands near Chester. The weather was great, and we had a fantastic time walking around the reserve. There are three great hides, some screens, plus views from the visitor centre and cafe. We saw so many great birds, including Marsh Harriers, Peregrine Falcon, loads of waders, Egrets and Herons and a pair of Avocet. #naturetasticwithhenry #naturetastic #naturetasticontour #chesire #chester #rspb #burtonmere #burtonmerewetlands #birding #marshharrier #avocet #waders #birdwatching

Congratulations to Eco-Hero of the Week Henry Day from Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom! With over 50 nature videos to his credit, eight-year-old Henry has his own YouTube Channel, “Naturetastic with Henry.” Henry is both knowledgeable and passionate about the natural world and caring for wildlife. With humor and sensitivity, he encourages other young people to explore nature from their own backyards and nearby preserves and parks. “Wanting to add a child’s voice, I have made a series of nature videos documenting my adventures in nature and targeted videos about conservation, success stories, and what we can do to help. I want to encourage children to reconnect with nature and take practical action to protect wildlife,” writes Henry. Henry was encouraged to be brave and to start making films by his parents, inspired by renowned Naturalist David Attenborough and Maddie Moate, a British TV personality also involved in introducing nature to children. Henry’s father Matthew shared, “Henry decides what we make films about. Whenever we go somewhere, he gets to decide if we make a video or not, as it’s important to just enjoy our visits and exploring sometimes. Henry has always done the research on facts and increasingly writes the scripts, or just ad-libs if it’s a short video on social media.” Henry is also a Junior Ambassador for The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire. He regularly writes articles for their nature newsletter and also makes films for their programs. Louise Rackham, Head of Communities and Wildlife at the Trust, said of Henry, “ His videos demonstrate his enthusiasm and passion for everything wildlife. He has demonstrated through videos how to make solitary bee hotels for your garden, easy ways to make your garden more wildlife friendly, and how to help hedgehogs. To find somebody so young but so committed to his cause is quite a rarity in this day and age, especially when the protection of our planet is so vital. Young people like Henry give you hope.”

Today I’m going to the House of Parliament to watch the debate over the inclusion of Swift Bricks into new houses. I was at the launch of the campaign when @writerhannahbt delivered #thefeatherspeech and helped promote the petition that received over 100,000 signatures, we’ve added a Swift box to our house just outside my bedroom window, last week I spent the evening of my birthday watching Swifts soar over the Cambridge Colleges and I’ve been watching the Swifts at @wildlifebcn #trumpingtonmeadowsnaturereserve in their nest box. So to follow the next stage of the debate will be interesting! I’ll share some photos from outside when we get there! You can also watch live as it will be broadcast. #naturetastic #naturetasticwithhenry #passionisasuperpower #featherspeech #swifts #savetheswifts #rspb #rewritingextinction @rspb @rewritingextinction @commons_speaker

A quick update of my profile - as I turned 10 yesterday!! It was also the last day of the school year… but I was feeling ill so no last day… and no birthday party and sleepover! I was feeling better by the evening, so we went for a late night walk around Cambridge and then to @wildlifebcn Cherry Hinton where I saw Glow Worms for the first time… made much easier as we bumped into a Wildlife Trust group on a search… thank you! They are really hard to photograph!! We also saw Common and Soprano Pipistrelle’s flying through the woods… really low over the grass and us! @thewildlifetrusts @royentsoc @insectweek @batconservationtrust #naturetasticwithhenry #naturetastic #birthday #cherryhinton #bats #glowworms #wildlifetrust #cambridge #cambridgeshire #naturereserve #chalkpit

It’s #worldenvironmentday 🌊🐠 The ocean is part of our home, but it's in danger! 😢 Let's talk about a major threat: plastic pollution and ghost nets. 🚫🎣 These silent killers are suffocating marine life and destroying precious ecosystems. 😔💔 It's time to take action! 🙌🌍 Look at this poor fish 🐟 caught in a plastic ring we saw in the harbour! 🌊♻️ Say NO to single-use plastics and opt for sustainable alternatives. Every small step counts! 🌿🌎 Let's reduce, reuse, and recycle to protect our beautiful oceans. 🐬💙 🎣🆘 Ghost nets are abandoned fishing nets that continue to trap and kill innocent marine creatures. Let's spread awareness and demand stricter regulations to prevent their deadly impact. 🦈🚫 We helped recover this one, but there are many more just floating around!!! 📢 Join the fight against ocean plastic pollution today! Share this message and inspire others to make a difference. 🌟 Together, we can save our oceans and create a brighter future for all marine life! 🌊🌍💙 #SaveOurOceans #PlasticPollution #NoMoreGhostNets #SustainableLiving #ProtectMarineLife #ReduceReuseRecycle #BeTheChange #TogetherWeCanMakeADifference #naturetasticwithhenry #naturetasticontour #naturetastic #ghostnets #cleantheseas @ghost_net_collective @cleanourseas @maddiemoate @meganmccubbinwild @wwf_uk @wwf @thewildlifetrusts @oceancleanup.project @theoceancleanup @plastictides

Day 3 of #30DaysWild and I’ve been watching the Seabirds around the harbour and out at sea in the Azores. We’ve seen Yellow-legged Gulls, Terns and Cory’s Shearwater. Day 2 of #30DaysWild and it’s been Geological! We explored the caldera of the Furnas Volcano in the Azores. There is a lake and a town inside it and it’s technically still active, but hasn’t erupted since 1630. There are hot springs, bubbling mud and boiling water throughout the town… as well as cold water springs that are naturally fizzy. We then explored the botanical gardens which were like a Temperate Rainforest with lichens and mosses everywhere. @thewildlifetrusts @wildlifebcn @30dayswild #naturetasticwithhenry #naturetastic #naturetasticontour #azores #açores #furnas #volcano #hotsprings #sulphur #botanical #botanicalgardens #temperaterainforest #rainforest

I’m the luckiest person ever… tonight I received a parcel with an amazing surprise in it… @meganmccubbinwild new book… it’s not even available until May 11th!!! It looks amazing, it’s all about different endangered animals from Glow-worms to Temminck’s Ground Pangolin to Northern White Rhino! The illustrations by @emilyjaynerobertson are beautiful and I can’t wait to read it. Thank you so much Megan for sharing this with me and for my lovely message! The dedication in the book is really cool too - To the scientists who discover, the activists who fight and to the teachers who empower - but most importantly, to the species which make this curious world so beautiful. This book is for you. I’m going to start reading straight away, it looks sad and full of hope at the same time and is so well written… book review coming soon!! Starting on Valentines Day each year, #nationalbirdboxweek is a great reminder to clean, repair and put up new bird boxes for our feathered friends! I started today at @wildlifebcn @nenevalleybcn building my own bird box, and then put it up in the garden along with some other we had bought. They have different size holes to suit different birds. Why do nestboxes matter? (From https://www.nestboxweek.com) British birds are short of nesting holes, and there are plenty of reasons why. Our gardens, parks and woodland are neater and tidier than they used to be, depriving birds of natural holes to find a home. And to make matters worse there are fewer handy nooks and crannies in modern buildings. The populations of many bird species are down as a result of this housing shortage. The good news is that everyone can do their bit to help… and your own garden’s a great place to start. #naturetasticwithhenry #naturetastic #birdbox #birdboxweek #rspb #bto #wildlifetrust #wildlifetrusts #buildabirdbox #wildlifewatch #bbcspringwatch #springwatch @wildlifetrusts @rspb_love_nature @btobirds @meganmccubbinwild @greeneindy @hamzayassin90 @chrisgpackham2 @wildlifegardenproject @iolo.williams.007 @cj_wildlife

Awesome day at @woburn_safari taking part in their Weekend Safari School. We started off by helping to sweep and tidy up the Giraffe’s bedding, and then help feed them. Next was monkey enrichment, we used pine cones covered in food to make it interesting for the monkeys. We were driven out to monkey enclosure, visiting the Rhinos, Zebra and big cats on the way in the education team’s Land Rover. It was really cool being able to go off road and get up close to the animals. After our lunch we prepared food for the Wallabies and then went to feed them and then explored the walkabout Safari to learn more about the animals there. Last weekend I revisited the @wildlifebcn unique landscape scale project — #TheGreatFen! The Great Fen is huge, and over time will become more and more protected. It’s a mixture of natural fenland and farmed areas between Peterborough and Huntingdon and is nationally important as 99% of the UK’s Natural Fenland has disappeared to drainage and farming. Please watch my video - Naturetastic | The Great Fen | Exploring and supporting a unique landscape https://youtu.be/A196b6YTHqM Or click the link in my bio. The @thewildlifetrusts @wildlifebcn are currently raising money to buy the next part of the project and link the two Fen Nature Reserves with a wildlife corridor. My films have covered lots of other topics from Marine Protection Zones to Bat Walks, from Lions and Hyenas to Wildlife Gardening and from Building Hibernaculum to completing the #BigWildWalk Last month I won the @wenaturalists Green Childhood Storyteller of the Year Award for my films, and came third in the @actionfornature Eco-Hero Awards. It’s on its way.. but who knows how long it will take to arrive! I’ve just posted a letter to Savannah who lives in #tristandacunha to ask if we can be pen pals! Savannah waved back at me when I was on holiday and waved across the South Atlantic Ocean from one of the closest points to Tristan… 3000km away in Namibia!! I’m looking to learning more about life on the Islands! #naturetastic #naturetasticwithhenry #penpal #penpals #tristandacunha #atlanticguardians #smallislandbigimpact #marineprotectionzone #marineprotectedarea #bluebeltprogramme #UKOTS #tristan #southatlantic @atlanticguardians @tdcpt @andy_schofield_ukots @nomadic_sue @bluebeltprogramme @sailorsteph7 @wildlifebloggercrowd @rspb_love_nature @chunckymonkey851

Today is #internationalelephantday and my latest #Naturetastic film is all about them! Elephants are amazing creatures, and I was lucky enough to see some large herds of them in the Etosha National Park in Namibia. However, across Africa and Asia there has been a big decline in their numbers. This film teaches you some cool facts about Elephants, as well as mentioning some organisations who are working to protect and conserve the elephant populations and habitats. We need to protect and grow their habitats across Africa and Asia, as well as stop poaching and the illegal trade in Endangered animals. #naturetasticwithhenry #Naturetasticontour #elephants #elephant #elephantsofinstagram #elephantconservation #etosha #etoshanationalpark #namibia #nationalparks #protectedspaces #consevation #ivorytrade #poaching #elephantfacts #wildlifefilm #wildlifephotography

It’s #WorldLionDay and I’ve recently visited the @etoshanationalpark on an amazing wildlife adventure. We saw many lions there, who benefit from the protection offered by the National Park and the conservation efforts. The park helps reduce the strain on the lions of habitat destruction and human conflict. The @etoshalionproject_ monitor the lions there and you can see radio collars in some of my photos. I was lucky to see Hyenas and Lions competing over a kill, and my latest #naturetasticwithhenry film is all about this. The last day of #30dayswild and for day 30 my #30naturetasticspecies is something we see soaring above our house most of the time… but it didn’t used to be like that… my species of the day is the conservation success story - the Red Kite! @thewildlifetrusts say that Seeing a red kite soaring high in the sky is a true delight! Once a very rare bird, thanks to successful reintroduction projects these wonderful birds can now be seen in lots of places in the UK. I completely agree - I love seeing them soar on the thermals! Thank you @30dayswild for a great month! @wildlifebcn @rspb_love_nature #naturetastic #naturetasticwithhenry #redkites #redkitesofinstagram #kites #raptors

The penultimate day of #30dayswild - Day 29! My #30naturetasticspecies of the day is the Yellow Water Lily, found along the edges of the River Nene. These lovely plants span the above and below water environments providing homes, food, shelter, and a place to lay eggs for amphibians, fish, insects and many others as well as an early source of nectar. I wanted to create a mini-Mindful Moment just like in @bbcspringwatch, so I hope you enjoy watching the wind ripple the river surface around the Yellow Flowers of the Water Lily. @thewildlifetrusts @wildlifebcn @30dayswild @nenevalleybcn @nenevalley @chrisgpackham2 @lucy_lapwing @meganmccubbinwild @strachan.michaela #naturetastic #naturetasticwithhenry #waterlily #waterlillies #water #rivernene #nene #mindfulness #mindful #mindfulmoment #bbcspringwatch #springwatch

My species of the day for day 28 of #30dayswild is the amazingly beautiful Common Tern. We walked and sat by the River Nene watching them patrol the water looking for fish… they hover, swoop and dive and we were lucky to film them catching fish (they move fast!). The Common Tern is one of many terns in Britain, and the local Wildlife Trust @wildlifebcn has recently added some Tern Rafts to the lakes at @nenevalleybcn providing safer nesting sites than the gravelly edges. I loved watching them on this walk! @30dayswild @thewildlifetrusts @nenevalley #naturetastic #naturetasticwithhenry #terns #tern #commontern #seabirds #fishing #rivernene #nene #nenewetlands

For Day 27 of #30dayswild I’m revealing my next #30naturetasticspecies of the day… and it’s the Lesser Stag Beetle! We saw this one last night on an evening walk near the River Nene, nearby was this amazing treat trunk! The lesser stag beetle may be smaller than its famous cousin, but it is still a large beetle with large jaws. It can be seen in woods, parks and hedgerows during summer, and depends on dead wood. The grow up to 4cm long, not as big as a Stag Beetle, but still a really cool beetle 🪲. This one was on a cycle track, so we moved him to the edge to keep safe. #insectweek was last week, but I think this counts as it was Sunday evening! @wildlifebcn @thewildlifetrusts @30dayswild @insectweek @royentsoc @ptes_org #naturetastic #naturetasticwithhenry #stagbeetle #stagbeetles #stagbeetlesofinstagram #lesserstagbeetle #beetles

My #30dayswild species of the day is the Snail! These amazing mini-beasts are considered pests by some gardeners, but in our garden we hope they are kept under control by the hedgehogs, thrushes and other wildlife that they share a food web with! Slugs and snails are very important. They provide food for all sorts of mammals, birds, slow worms, earthworms, insects and they are part of the natural balance. Upset that balance by removing them and we can do a lot of harm. Thrushes in particular thrive on them! Many people don’t like slugs and snails in their lovingly cultivated gardens, in fact British Gardeners use some 650 billion slug pellets per year! Please find an alternative – the poison from slug pellets enters the food chain and kills hedgehogs, who consider slugs and snails as a tasty treat. @wildlifebcn @thewildlifetrusts @30dayswild #naturetastic #naturetasticwithhenry #30naturetasticspecies #snails #snailsofinstagram #wildlifegarden #wildlifegardening #mollusc #molluscs #slugsandsnails

Day 25 of #30dayswild and my species of the day is the bee… all over 250 types in the UK! It’s still #insectweek and I’m still thinking about what my favourite insect is! We have pollinators to thank for every third mouthful we eat. Not only do they pollinate our food crops, but they’re also vital for the survival of other wild plants that support so much of our wildlife. Most of us tend to think of bees in relation to pollination, yet insect pollinators are an incredibly diverse group. Honeybees are mostly kept in managed hives, and are likely responsible for pollinating between 5-15% of the UK's insect-pollinated crops. That leaves 85-95% of the UK’s insect-pollinated crops relying on wild pollinators. Many species of bee, moth, butterfly, hoverfly, fly and beetle provide an essential service in the UK (and globally) pollinating £690 million worth of crops annually. Taking over this job ourselves would be difficult and time-consuming and would cost us an estimated £1.8 billion every year! @wildlifebcn @wildlifetrusts @30dayswild @insectweek @royentsoc @bumblebeeconservationtrust #naturetastic #naturetasticwithhenry #bees #bumblebee #beesofinstagram #bumblebees #bee #bumblebeesofinstagram
