According to the Railcar website, set 104325 was officially known as the Mexican Bean! Absolutely no idea why. I also had no idea that Oban had a full on Roman coliseum pitched high above the town! At school I was taught the Romans only got as far as Hadrian’s Wall before they got pissed off with getting their asses whipped by the local scheme tribes. I’ve developed a growing fondness for these units as I’ve gotten older and I rather like the Mexican Bean; especially with the Westie on the side which, I would normally associate with an Eastfield 37. The brown matches the brown on the Cortina parked next to that e21 BMW. What happened to brown? Brown done right can make up quite a nice colour scheme, whereas the latest trend of 50 shades of grey, makes anything that it adorns look nondescript and conformist. #scannedslide #scotrail

Delighted to scan this idyllic image of rural England taken some time back in the bad old days ;-) No info’ as per usual - my gut instinct initially told me it was somewhere out Stroud way but that M7 would suggest otherwise. It seems quite an unusual pairing of engines to me ,with the mogul making the leading engine appear quite archaic in comparison. However , it’s a fine looking assemblage nonetheless, with a backdrop that would give any decent landscape artist something to get their teeth into . ***quickly ID’d as Ilfracombe*** #scannedslide #steamengine #steamlocomotive #greatwesternrailway #lswr #londonsouthwesternrailway #southerrailway

I absolutely love this slide….. the sunlight really brings out the depths of Oliver Bulleid’s truly inspired design. To my mind he achieved a kind of utilitarian ornate-ness, which, in my opinion, is virtually impossible to pull off. It’s just so well proportioned and good looking! The Firth Brown drive wheels are tantamount to genius and I see hints of the earlier German DRG 01 Class in that cab which, I think all adds up to giving this light-Pacific a rather imposing, imperial quality . I couldn’t give a stuff for anything being produced for the railways today and this celestial brute should explain why. 34104 ‘Bere Alston’ was built in April 1950 at Eastleigh. It was rebuilt in May ‘61 and withdrawn in June 1967. Considering the size, ability and efficiency of this engine, a mere 17 years service seems quite unjust somehow. #scannedslide #bulleidpacific #oliverbulleid #westcountryclass #berealston #steamtrain #steamengine #steamlocomotive

4984 ‘Albrighton Hall’ pulling some wagons. I dunno’ … a Hall Class shifting freight doesn’t seem right somehow.. like , not as intended. 4984 was built in January 1931 and withdrawn in September’62. I don’t know where this was taken but there’s another engine working at the tail end , perhaps a banker? #hallclass #greatwesternrailway #gwr #steamtrain #steamengine #freighttrain #charlescollett #swindonworks #scannedslide #epsonv600

The coool drive in 1966 was my 2.5 litre Riley, with go faster stripes on the roof, 6" Marchal Spot & Fog lamps. Bumper removed and pinstriping (?) around the wings, possibly to hide the extensive rust. I also had a 2" straight through silencer, exhausting under the front passenger door, until the fuzz deemed it too noisy, so the front bit of a Morris Minor exhaust was grafted on. It still sounded meaty, but you could converse without shouting. Oh it also had the lovely dash from an Alvis TA14 grafted in... #scannedslide #riley2.5 #hotrod #meanmachine #hayes #shepistonlane #boyracer

I am posting some photos taken in 1975 during our 3 year contract in Zambia in southeastern Zambia. Here we are entering the small, brand new city of Lilongwe which had become the new capital of Malawi only 6 months earlier. It had a metropolitan population of about 70,000 then. Today it has increased to a staggering, and in my case, an incomprehensible population of 1.3 million people. Something a bit different. A Metro-Vick from the first half of the 1920s, and what a handsome thing it is! I mean….. that coachwork! 🤤 20 were produced and 19 were named after real or fictitious people who had a connection with the area served by the Metropolitan Railway. No.12’s namesake was the actress Sarah Siddons who, is laid to rest at Paddington Green (I used to pass her statue on my way to Euston from Chiswick if I drove to work instead of cycled; her effigy being visible from where the Harrow Road meets the Westway). Other names synonymous with the area included British icons such as Sherlock Holmes, Sir Christopher Wren, Olivier Cromwell and Michael Faraday which personally, I find positively commendable in comparison with some of the names I see adorned on some locos and units these days. I’m not sure if they all carried this maroon colour scheme or whether the livery was changed during their 40 odd years of their operation. By 1961 all were withdrawn from passenger service due to full network coverage of electrical multiple units. ***Was 47583 ‘County of Hertfordshire’ on the scene as that particular county was served by the Metropolitan and this locomotive?*** #londonunderground #londontransport #metropolitanrailway #metropolitanline #sarahsiddons #scannedslide #epsonv600

My favourite coach of all time has to be the mk3 , however, when it comes to rolling stock being hauled by a Deltic, the mk2 looks and feels most appropriate. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of a Cl.55 dragging a rake of just mk2s though, there’s always a mk1 snuck in there somewhere . #class55 #delticclass #deltic #englishelectric #britishrail #passengertrain #brblue #mk2coach #scannedslide #epsonv600

This may be just about as geeky as Jeremy Corbyn’s penchant for manhole covers but I wanna talk about benches; specifically.. the benches of Dawlish. Does anyone remember the old wooden benches in and around Dawlish as featured in the slides above? Probably due to the fact that my backside spent many hours parked on one whilst watching the world go by I have vivid memories of them going right back to childhood.. and as I grew older, they remained a term of reference which, I would always associate with this iconic seaside municipality. I recently posted a slide of a Castle taken from the mini-golf course c1960 - and a couple of the benches I’m talking about can be seen in sitchu’ on the path along Dawlish Water. The same design features in the slide above with the Warship, probably taken sometime around 1970. The shot of the Voyager was taken by me in 2004 where the same design can be found on Marine Parade. Fast forward to the 2011 Google street view and the bench is still there. But alas, after 2011 these unique pieces of street furniture exclusive to this area seem to disappear from all existence and in my opinion, that’s a damn shame if they didn’t need replacing. You see to me, it’s little details such as these which go largely unnoticed by the passer-by, that collectively make up the fabric of a place. Sure one could argue they’re just benches but on the flip side, one could acknowledge: these unassuming ponder perches, throughout their five plus decades of presence, performed their duty without complaint and withstood the glut of progression. From installation they endured countless seasons, probably seen goodness knows how many local authority changeovers, seated thousands of locals & holidaymakers rear ends and bared witness to the passing of just about every engine & rolling stock that every rode on western region rails. #gloriousdevon #dawlish #dawlishseawall #forgottenplaces #scannedslide #warshipclass #class221

No info’ on this one. Due to the variation of other locos’ and parts laying around it, it looks to me like this is an original Romanian cl.56 rebuild as opposed to a 56 on an assembly line. I could be wrong- it could be one being built from scratch - either way the location would be Crewe or Doncaster. But what I really wanna know is - what’s matey keeping in that locker.. the 11th one from the right with the extra big bastard padlock on it? Three different slides of 86242 taken at Euston, not posted in any particular order. Looks like a shunt move in preparation to work a sleeper. Date unknown but pictures taken sometime after that livery was introduced around 1984. Some brief information of this particular loco’: E3138 was built at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows and entered into service in 1966. In June 1975 it had the misfortune of being one of the two 86s involved in the Nuneaton rail crash - after which, the heavily damaged loco’ was repaired and put back into service. In November 1981 It was named ‘James Kennedy GC’ after the Scottish security guard who was murdered six years previous by armed robbers, as they attempted to steal BREL staff payroll at Glasgow. In 2002 86242 was renamed ‘Colchester Castle’ and in October 2004 it was withdrawn. Sat idle until July 2013, 242 was then exported to Hungary and operated by Floyd ZRt as no.0450 008-2. Presumably it’s in use today and if that’s the case, it’s now 58 years old with a few million miles under its belt. #class86 #londoneuston #eustonstation #electriclocomotive #sleepertrain #redstarparcels #intercity #executivelivery #passengertrain #britishrail #scannedslide #epsonv600
