Our 50th wedding anniversary was had in lockdown. So was our 51st. 💐 We decided to treat ourselves this time by having a minibreak at the Grand Hotel Continental, right in the centre of Siena where the famous horse race is run. 🐎 My first acquaintance with this hotel was trying to thread my way through a whole lot of Siena tifosi (football fans) hurling abuse because Milano were staying here - so I thought it must be good - top football players don’t do things by halves! ⚽️ It was only 4 minutes to pretty much everything, which was perfect, because I can hardly walk thanks to bone on bone arthritis in what used to be my ‘good’ knee. 🦿 The tromp l’oeil urn looks rather wonky in the photo! So you’ve probably guessed - we are back in our beloved Tuscany! 💚 It is so green this spring after good rains that it looks almost fake! One of the most interesting things we have done in Siena was a tour of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. This is not a widely available tour and we were privileged to take it thanks to a dear friend - but I believe you can request the bank for a tour. 🇮🇹 It was a chilly autumn day some years ago that my photos were taken. I did not have a photo of Palazzo Salimbene where it is located, so I copied one from the internet - it had no attribution but if anyone knows the photographer I would be glad to attribute it. 🏢 The interior of the bank has been renovated in a modern way that is nevertheless very much in keeping with the ancient building, with beautiful wooden balconies and a central stone tower which took us to the roof where I was able to take a photo of Siena from a perspective that very few are privileged to see. 🇮🇹 In the bank are many precious works of art, sculptures, and in the archives a letter from Garibaldi explaining that he found himself unable to pay his debt, along with other interesting treasures. 🇮🇹 Monte Paschi di Siena bank traces its history to a mount of piety (monte di pietà) founded by order of the Magistrature of the Republic of Siena on 4 March 1472, when its statute was approved. 🇮🇹 It is therefore often regarded as being the oldest bank in the world in continuous operation. Currently it is in deep trouble due to unfortunate modern financial transactions. That Wanaka Tree! Like all photographers, I headed straight to this incredible tree which grows in the water. 🏃♀️ Like any photographer, I took some long exposures, which smooth out the water and give it a silky look. 💧 I was out of luck with the sky, which remained stubbornly grey - no colour and no cloud effects as they stream by on the wind. Oh, well. It was magical, anyway. 🌅 I totally disagree with people who say, ‘Oh, it has been done before!’, and think you shouldn’t photograph anything that has been ‘done’. That’s like saying Mozart is no good because a lot of people love his music. 🎼 If a thing is popular, there’s a reason. If I haven’t photographed it before, this is a unique experience for me personally, and the light or weather when I photograph it will be different to when others have photographed it. Staying with our friends in Queenstown, I was much impressed by horizontal rainbows at the base of the mountains. Walking around Arrowtown we were charmed by the period buildings and gorgeous gardens. 💐 It wasn’t too full of tourists (like us!) We moved to Best Island, further along the coast towards Nelson. 🌖 Although I can’t wax eloquent about our Air B’n’B accomodation, which was not very comfortable and had so many rules it made us nervous, the views when the moon came up were great! 🎑 I was very grateful to our SIL who came down to tell me about the moonrise! We headed to the edge of Abel Tasman National Park, where we stayed in well appointed cottages which were great! 👏 I am not being paid to say this and probably shouldn’t, because next time we’ll most likely find it impossible to book, but The Barn in Marahua was the best place we stayed at for the whole trip! 😊 Listed as a backpacker’s camping ground, it is so much more. Our cabin was very thoughtfully designed with a sitting room, bedroom, laundry and full kitchen in which we cooked some excellent meals. 😋 There was a BBQ on the terrace of our cottage and the smaller one in which our daughter and son-in-law stayed. 🥂🍷🍸🍹🍺🍾 Drinks on the terrace were always welcome, and we just loved the views of mountains and sea over paddocks, a passing parade of local birds, plus the interested attentions of Peking Ducks which peered over the edge of the terrace hoping for snacks. 🦆🦜🕊️ Our daughter and son-in-law went off hiking and canoeing, we got as far into the national park as my aging widgets would carry me - of which, more in the next post! 🛶🥾🌳 It was quiet, peaceful, and on the edge of the wilderness - our kind of place - we loved it! 😍 The staff were very helpful and when I emailed to ask if I had left my lens hood there, they went to a lot of trouble to try to find it. 👍Thumbs up from us! We picked up our daughter and son-in-law at Nelson airport. ❤️ It’s the first time we’ve seen each other since we hugged goodbye at Delhi airport. Our next adventure began in New Zealand. We started off in Christchurch, catching up with dear friends we met in London about 20 years ago. 🥰 When I moved to Milan because of my husband’s job, an Italian lady I met at the Benvenuto Club said ‘I don’t make friends with the stranieri (foreigners) because when they move on, I will lose a friend.’ 😥 I looked at her in astonishment. ‘But you could end up with friends all over the world!’ 🌎 That is certainly what happened to me. I have friends in every corner of the world, and it is a joy to catch up with them! 💞 My friend, a Londoner who moved to New Zealand with her Kiwi husband, reminisced with me about our friendship group of four - a Jewish lady from New York, a Palestinian lady who ended up living in Cairo where I caught up with her on our trip to Egypt, herself, and me. 😍 She always called for a photo of all four of us - taken by a waiter, usually - or at the Opera of Paris, a fellow patron - what marvellous memories they preserve! 😊 We lunched at Tussock Hills Winery with great food and lovely views down over Christchurch - and here she is with my husband. The planting up of the orto (vegetable garden) back in April started to bear fruit. 🌱 This magnificent tomato, weighing in at 450g, also tasted delicious and had a silky texture, grown to full maturity before being brought in warm from the Tuscan sun for lunch. 😋 This tomato has an Instagram story behind it! I wrote wistfully about the heritage tomatoes grown by an old friend in Italy being so full of flavour. She gave me seeds but when I declared them on entry to Australia they were irradiated in case they were bringing in any tiny, harmful organisms we don’t have in Australia. 🍎 I was sad but I fully support the protection of our borders from introduced pests. 🪳 @robmanciniart kindly wrote to me offering seeds from heritage tomatoes brought in and grown by his grandfather at Bacchus Marsh. 🌱 Rob sent me the seeds, and as I didn’t have a garden at the beach apartment, my sister-in- law grew them for me. 🍎 When they ripened, everyone in the Italian extended family loved them, and seeds were passed around the whole family! Seeds were also given to us to take to Tuscany in April. 🌱 No border controls in Italy! We brought the seeds to our friend’s farmhouse and here is the result! 🍎 Our Italian friends all received gifts of seeds and this variety is now going to be flourishing each year in the motherland and all over Victoria! This is one of our neighbours’ Maremmano sheepdogs. They are frequently seen in Tuscany. 🐕 They originated in Abruzzo. The breed goes back thousands of years and is often identified as a Maremma sheepdog after the coastal areas of Lazio. 🐕 They live with the sheep and accompany them everywhere. Another image that has done very well in the International Exhibitions is this one. ❄️ It doesn’t look as good in a 1:1 crop as it does in full landscape mode. ❄️ I was on a boat in the Arctic with @gerryvanderwalt, @sarahj_burke and @chris_michel when I spotted this detail of a mountain which I found pleasing to the eye with its beautiful curves and pristine snow. ❄️ I had my long lens for animals like walrus and polar bears, so I zoomed into the landscape and took this detail of the mountain. ❄️ I called it ‘Purity’ because that was what struck me most about the Arctic.
