Today, on the third day of Mayumla’s passing, our young anis came to offer their respect, prayers and well wishes. Mayumla doted on the young anis. She had a stash of treats ever so ready in her room. Whenever young anis visited her, she would offer them the treats and made anis’ day! Some of us senior anis grew up under the love and care of Mayumla. We were also there at her last breath…… She was in many ways also our mother. We will do our best to follow her advice and practice the Buddha dharma diligently. We miss her dearly. Thank you very much Mayumla for everything. This is Lama Samten. He is a team member of Kutsab Ternga construction project and lives in the gompa together with Lama Yonten. When he was a small boy, his father decided that he should become a lama. At the age of 8 years old, his father brought him and his brother and sister from their hometown in upper Mustang to Pokhara to do business for a few months. They walked for about five days to a week on foot to Pokhara. His father carried the two younger children, one on the back and one in front, while lama Samten walked by his father’s side. After his father had completed with the business in Pokhara, he brought lama Samten to Jangchub Choeling Monastery (JCM) to be ordained as a lama. The brother and sister were sent off to study in a school in Pokhara. The young Lama Samten somehow adapted to the new environment. He missed home only the very first time when he was allowed to leave the monastery, many years later for a holiday. He returned home to visit his family in upper Mustang. When it was time for him to return to JCM, he really wanted to remain at home with his family for that fleeting moment. Eventually, he returned to JCM just before the holiday ended. Subsequently, that thought never crossed his mind anymore. He is 38 years old now in 2023. Lama Samten is a very quiet and hardworking monk. This reticent lama works very well helping out whatever is needed in the gompa. Both Lama Yonten and Lama Samten makes a great team and support for each other. These are dried small turnips, one of the favorite snacks of Shangpa Rinpoche when he was a boy. The previous Shangpa Rinpoche went into a long 12 years retreat at Serphuk cave in Dolpo near Tichu Rong. He was so focused on his meditation and practiced so well that his physical body became weak. Food was scarce as he was in isolation. During the winters, the cave became completely inaccessible due to heavy snow. One day, he decided he must find food in order to continue with his practice and set out for the village. Alas, he could not get any alms as the villagers were away attending a funeral elsewhere. He could not wait for the villagers to return as it would be dark by then. As he started walking back to the cave, he saw some turnips left in the sun to dry. He thought over countless times whether to take some or not. He thought it would be stealing as he did not ask for permission. Yet, he might die of hunger without any food and without being able to complete his practice. Finally he took 10 pieces and returned to the cave. He ate one piece of dried turnip a day and that lasted him for 10 days of good practice. On the 11th day, he wasn’t sure how to go about getting food again. Going to the village was a big effort and it distracted his motivation. He decided to remain and accept all consequences. A few days later, a dog visited his cave. He was elated and wrote a note saying that he was a hermit in a cave in need of food and tied the note to the dog, hoping that it will bring the message to the villagers. The next day, the villagers indeed brought food for him upon finding the note and in returned he taught them dharma and gave them blessings. #driedturnips #shangparinpoche #pastlives

Tomorrow is the day of Zamling Chisang. Also known as Universal Prayer Day or Incense Day, it is a day to celebrate Guru Rinpoche’s liberation of local deities and the founding of the Samye Monastery. It falls on the 15th day of the 5th month of the Tibetan calendar. Guru Rinpoche tamed the local deities to become the protectors of Buddhism in Tibet. Samye monastery was then smoothly built as a result of that. Mark your 🗓️: 3 July 2023 Zamling Chisang or Universal Prayer Day or Incense Day is a day to celebrate Guru Rinpoche’s liberation of local deities and founding of the Samye Monastery, the first monastery in Tibet. It falls on the 15th day of the 5th month of the Tibetan calendar annually. Guru Rinpoche subjugated and tamed the local deities in Tibet to become protectors of Buddha dharma. On this day, important dharma activities include offering incense (sang); hanging prayer flags on high grounds so that the mantras are symbolically carried by the wind to benefit all sentient beings; purification practices, prayers; meditations; pujas and offerings such as tea, to the Protectors; Guru Rinpoche prayers or meditations are performed. Just like Guru Rinpoche subdued the evil spirits, let’s tame our inner demons and minds on this significant day. Shangpa Rinpoche is currently in #Singapore . 🗓️: 21 May 2023 Upon request by disciples, Rinpochela kindly bestowed oral transmission on Riwo Sangcho, Supplication to the 1st Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa & the Treasury of the Profound Mantras. In summary, Rinpochela taught the following on #riwosangcho རི་བོ་བསང་མཆོད་ Traditionally, Tibetans burn 🔥 & offer #Juniper 🍃 #incense to cleanse the environment. The practice of Sang is not only for cleansing; it is also a great offering to the Triple Gem & Triple Roots 🙏🏻. Thru’ mental development, the smoke from the lighted incense manifest into 5 offerings of external sensory objects within the aggregate like form (eg beautiful form), sound (eg melodic praises), scent (eg fragrance), taste (eg food) & touch (tangible objects like a good quality brocade). As such, Sang offering can be immense offerings to fulfill everyone’s wishes. The leftover Sang is then given to spirits of lower realms to smell, to receive blessings and to become liberated from the lower realms & be free from sufferings. If you are travelling & have limited resources, you can burn one incense to represent Sang. From there, you can develop visualization from your mind. Before offering the Sang, you purify it by sprinkling it with water 💦 and reciting RAM, YAM, KAM. This is to purify any defects in the offerings, for instance, you were miserly when offering. Then you recite the mantra OM, AH and HUNG. These 3 syllables represent the body, speech & mind of the Buddha. The Sang becomes immeasurable offerings to the Triple Gem & Roots. If you do not have the text, yet you still wish to perform Sang, you can simply do these. In Karma Kagyud tradition, the supplication prayers to the #firstkarmapa #dusumkhyenpa must be done with Sang prayers. As for the Treasury of the Profound Mantras, Rinpochela advised that it is good to recite the text in its entirety. ORIGINS OF KUTSAB TERNGA - REGRAM 5/6 Over the centuries, Kutsab Ternga temple was restored many times. The harsh weather conditions worn out the building structures repeatedly. In 1953, the 1st Shangpa Rinpoche from Tibet traveled to various places in the Himalayas in Tibet and Nepal and also visited Kutsab Ternga. He was well loved and respected in the Himalayan region where he travelled to rebuild monasteries and stupas. When he arrived at Kutsab Ternga during his pilgrimage, he saw a dilapidated temple that was unfitting to house the five treasures of Guru Rinpoche. He felt very sad, and started to raise funds from Tibet and Nepal to rebuild the temple. Rinpoche supervised the design and construction of the temple. Most of the locals volunteered to work on the restoration for free. When the work was completed after four years, Rinpoche was full of joy and performed a fifteen days puja and consecration ceremony. He ordained several monks and handed over the monastery to the villagers. ORIGINS OF KUTSAB TERNGA - REGRAM 4/6 When the temple was completed, the Great Lama Lungten Ugyen Palsang invited his Guru Ridgzin Chenpo Duddul Dorje Rinpoche (a #terton ) from Tibet to inaugurate the temple. During the consecration ceremony, a beautiful rainbow 🌈 appeared and remained in the skies for three days. Dakinis ❤️🤍💛💚💙 danced joyously to melodious celestial music on the roof and left their footprints on silk cloths that were laid on the temple grounds. These could be seen by fortunate devotees endowed with great blessings.
