So we decided to go on a new walk this afternoon and tick off another card from @huntmaster.design #hiddenhawick deck. Great walk to Shankend Viaduct. When we got to the top of the viaduct (and the fence that would not allow us across), we took in the view and turned round to realise that a over thirty bulls/cows had crept up behind us and trapped us on the viaduct. Thankfully, with dog firmly underarm and my wife herding them out of the way, we managed to escape! I never thought I would have to take out new life insurance to take part in this treasure hunt! The little girl tried to make friends with the pigs too. Nice to find a small part of the Waverley railway line too complete with derelict trains/carriages. End of the line! Today’s photo of mine shows the imposing Shankend Viaduct on the former Waverley Route six miles south of Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Completed in 1862, its 15 stone arches once carried the Edinburgh to Carlisle mainline until closure on 6 January 1969. Yet another victim of Dr Beeching’s ‘Axe’. More recently the line has been reopened as the Borders Railway between Edinburgh Waverley and Tweedbank. Covering the period from the birth of British Railways in 1948 to the Beeching era and beyond, End of the Line by Julian Holland chronologically traces the history of 467 long forgotten railway lines, region by region, from their opening to closure and in a few cases to reopening. 27th March 2023 will be the 60th anniversary of the publication of the ‘Beeching Report’. This weekend's bike ride: part two All the things that went right... Pausing for homemade soup under the massive Shankend Viaduct Exploring little-used forestry trails with a real feeling of remoteness Breaking up the bike ride with a walk - I never would've bothered to walk all that way on forest tracks to get to the top of a hill otherwise Unexpectedly discovering the site of Peelhopebrae, once a meeting point on the Teviotdale to Liddesdale drove road A wonderful tailwind that helped me up the hill to Penchrise A long fast descent to the main road past Stobs Camp, then more tailwind to speed me back to Hawick.
