Class 170, 170431 crossing the River Tweed on the approach to Tweedbank station. Escaped from soldering wire to track for a bit and finally took a train to Tweedbank. Almost 9 years since the first passenger trains ran on the newly (re)built Borders railway and I finally travelled south. I regularly travel North but this was a first, beautiful scenery and a real shame that rail tours seem to have stopped visiting. After last weekend’s tumble in the mud, I planned today’s walk predominantly along peaceful minor roads, with the aim of mud avoidance as far as possible 🙈 The walk also took in some of the snowdrop-lined Abbotsford Estate paths and returned via Tweedbank pond and the path that runs adjacent to the railway line (providing a bonus opportunity for train spotting!! 🚉🤓). Whilst walking a good friend to her train home South yesterday we came upon three folks encouraging passers by to add a few stitches onto a beautiful tapestry - the Galashiels Interchange Panel. The panel has been designed by Andrew Crummy MBE, designer from the Great Tapestry of Scotland. The project is run by Susie Finlayson a hand embroiderer based in the Scottish Borders with over 40 years experience. Over 1000 people have contributed to the tapestry and I'm so pleased I got the chance to add a stitch or two! We recently used the public transport options in and out of this area. The X62 bus is useful service to/from Edinburgh passing through the valley all the way to Galashiels . It can take 2 bikes. Not every X62 bus carries bikes use the App to see which ones do with the live update. There is also a train to Galashiels from Edinburgh which can link with the bus or just start a ride at Galashiels. No charge or reservations needed for bikes on both services. Covering the period from the birth of British Railways in 1948 to the Beeching era and beyond, End of the Line by Julian Holland chronologically traces the history of 467 long forgotten railway lines, region by region, from their opening to closure and in a few cases to reopening. 27th March 2023 will be the 60th anniversary of the publication of the ‘Beeching Report’. Kilnknowe junction railway bridge was opened in 1866 and was used as a junction until 1962. The arch on the right was the Edinburgh to Carlisle Waverley mainline and the arch on the was left to the Peebles loop branch line which closed in 1962. The lines were originally built and originally run by the North British Railway then in 1923 succeeded by the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923. The Peebles loop closed in 1962 and due to the Beeching cuts was followed by the Waverley Line in 1969. The line from Edinburgh reopened as the Borders Railway in 2015. Back at the England Scotland border to find a bridge I missed when I was down there a few weeks ago. Kershopefoot railway bridge crosses the Kershope burn which forms the border for its whole length of 7 miles. The bridge is a 3 arched stone Victorian bridge built to carry the Edinburgh to Carlisle Waverley railway line which opened in 1862 and closed due to the Beeching cuts in 1969. The bridge is on the opposite side of the C1007 road from what was Kershopefoot railway station.
