The subtleties within our four seasons excite me. Four defined seasons is nowhere near enough, so much has changed and re-shaped already within the brief bit of Spring we have had. In Japan the year is split into seventy two ‘mini-seasons’ and this makes so much more sense to me. The Japanese would refer to the period right now as the ‘Grain Rains’ part of Spring now that ‘Pure & Clear’ has finished. Reeds are sprouting, the frosts have ended, and Peonies will be coming into bloom very soon. In Sheffield meanwhile, the initial awakening of what we know as ‘Bright Spring’ has passed with bursts of Daffodil, Crocus, Tulip and Blossom, and we are now moving into the next phase of colour of ‘True Spring’, highlighted by the humble Bluebell. Almost half the world’s Bluebells are found in the UK and with Bluebell season having officially started on 11th April this year, it got me thinking, and then exploring the local woods. More importantly it has inspired my flower choices and colour palette for this week, purples, blues and white featuring Alliums, Asters and Callis Buttons. Spring flowers are here, wedding season has officially begun for 2024 and Greystone Flowers is 6 months old! When we were making plans to join our businesses to create a brand new one as a partnership, we needed a new name. It was hard enough thinking of a name the first time round. We didn’t know where our farm would be at that point, or if we would even find one! We both wanted something that reflected our area, both bordering the Peak District and felt like something with stone in the name would be fitting. Megan stumbled upon a cottage out on a walk in the peaks called Greystones which sparked the thought for our name. We also happen to have lots of lovely customers in and around Greystones so it seemed a great fit. A new flower for us this year. Lupins! They've grown SO fast and that alone might make them a new favourite 🤣. Sown on the 23rd of Feb and they're already 3 inches tall. It's really nice to see some vigorous growth after watching all our autumn sown seedlings languishing over winter. We're taking advantage of the warm weather today and potting them up, along with getting a head start on our summer seeds 😁.
