Dark and dramatic tulips! These two varieties pair beautifully together (Frozen Night and Black Hero), and both are rather long-stemmed. A bouquet’s journey - part one It always starts with selecting ingredients, choosing the perfect flowers from an abundance of seasonal harvests from our favourite local growers. This selection process is a quiet moment where we get to see the vision we’ve planned for months come to life. Starting early in the morning, I find it’s most peaceful to carry out this step before anyone else arrives at the studio. When the sun is only just rising and the birds have woken. Choosing a mixture of wild, wiggly and wonky stems, these are then set aside, ready for creating our playful wedding bouquets. Until last week I’d not put dandelions or nettles into an arrangement. I’m very much of the opinion that funeral flowers should not oblige, but celebrate and reflect the deceased, and so for this young forester who loved trees and plants, their flowers and their uses, it was important it was wild. I was happy to include the nettles and dandelions, and bluebells, gorse, wild garlic too. The first cow parsley. Foraged and found stems and branches from his special places, with foliage cut from trees he’d grown and nurtured in the family garden. Alongside some cultivated stems, using natural mechanics, this is what we made. Very special indeed. 💕

Autumn! Just about the best time for chrysanthemums, imho. Huge range of flower colour and form, long lasting, often fragrant, pretty silvery green foliage. Delish!

The first Rosella harvest! 😍 I planted 5 trees this season and they’re loaded!!! All growing in large containers or grow bags and they are huge!! I find Rosellas are such a wonderfully easy crop to grow! The don’t care about the rain, they’re not fussy with soil and they just give such prolific amounts! No wonder they are such a wonderful native! Gorgeous tulip blooms coming in hot! Icoon is a vibrant double that is red with gorgeous hints of pink, coral and orange. I think I love her! I have some of these available on the @coflowercollective wholesale site this week. I always think about what I’ll grow again next year, and pretty sure this one makes the cut. I didn’t have many stem snapping issues (IYKYK) and she is tall and pretty sturdy! JOBS FOR MAY As the weather starts to cool right down and the dahlias have almost come to a complete stop in flower production, the jobs in the dahlia patch continue… Be on the lookout for the spread of mildew and Botrytis. If undetected these diseases could spread through your entire stock. Destroy any affected leaves or laterals. Spraying with fungicide can help prevent mildew which is common around this time. For more methods on combating this, see our website or previous posts. The plants will start to die down naturally, but most growers start cutting back their plants to reduce the risk of infection. As the plants start to go yellow, cut them back by about a third and then a week or two later by another third and then when the plants have died back trim the dying plant right to the base. The tubers can be left in the ground unless your soil is very heavy and wet. The end of the season and the dahlias are blowing their centres more quickly as they try to get pollinated before they die back. Make sure your dahlias are correctly labelled. Note which varieties worked well for you and what you want to grow next year. Collect seed heads if you want to try breeding your own dahlias next season. They won’t come true to the parent, but they could be a pleasant surprise. As the season slowly comes to a halt and we get ready for a wintery cold blast, make sure you enjoy the last of your dahlia blooms. The universe is a funny thing. I found these forgotten photos on my DSLR camera this evening. They were taken in 2021 on the Swamp Rabbit Trail near @swamprabbitcafe. This weekend was the kids' birthday parties. We wanted it to be a blast since it was Eden's last whole class birthday and Hollis got a redo of his birthday since he puked on the way to his party last year. (And yes, I put way too much pressure on myself for this party, but I'm still working on that). It's also planting and seeding season, as well as tulip and daffodil season. Add on the normal day to day tasks and it was all too much in too short of a time. I lost it Friday. I questioned why I farm. Over the last few days I spent hours planting flowers that will turn our backyard into something magical. Then these beauties came in. I could breathe again. It felt like home, centered and calm. In the intensity of spring, Nature reminded me to come up to the surface and just breathe. Flower field update! Left for a few days and came back to some serious growth. 🌷 My favourite tulips and narcissus are in full bloom, and will likely be done by Mother’s Day. (That’s okay…they look great on my kitchen counter) 🌷Field-grown ranunculus and anemones are starting to bud, so I’ll hopefully have some at the #BloomBar next weekend. 🌷 The Fever Few and Yarrow perennialized. Woo hoo! Today has been spent, transplanting almost all of the soil blocked babies into bigger trays and containers. Starting seeds in soil block is perfect for when I need to start them off on the heat mat- and early spring. But now this good weather is here to stay for a while - any new seeds I plan to sow from now on- will be in normal seed module trays so they don’t dry out fast in the sunshine. April is such a busy month in the kitchen garden, the list of jobs is endless. Yesterday I finally finished planting the maincrop potatoes just as the shoots of first and second earlies are appearing. What's happening here? Broad beans flowering, tayters, French Breakfast radish, babyleaf Rubino spinach, the garlic has rust (in all this wet weather!), red salad bowl lettuce, onions from seed (single and multi sown), curled parsley and sweet peas. Phew!
