Another day, another tulip harvest! The first set of Spring subscriptions are going out today and that.was.hard. I was so worried this day may not come. After fretting all winter over the tulips and finally thinking we were ok, a deer came through and had a BIG snack! We put reinforced netting up right away and then noticed how short the stems were. Thankfully, Ashley, at @vailfamilyfarm had a great post on how to fix that! I ordered shade cloth and started watering tulips twice a day. Not only did we end up with beautiful stems, but beautiful blooms, too! Everyone is nestled in the cool fridge awaiting their delivery. I am so thankful for our Spring subscribers and have loved the tulips so much, I doubled way down on ordering for this upcoming year. I'm hoping to have tulips way earlier and way longer! Lily of the Valley! Now, this one can be invasive, growing from rhizomes that spread underground. We grow this in our house beds, hemmed in by our sildwalk, so it can't spread beyond that flower bed. It can't escape!

Meet Penny and her resilient peonies! 🌿 Last year, I planted about 20 of these delicate blooms in pots while living in Little Rock. But fate had other plans—blight struck, and my peonies struggled. When we moved, I brought them along, but I’ll admit, I didn’t care for them as I should have. They ended up in some forgotten holes in our new yard. Then, a few weeks ago, a delightful surprise awaited me. As I glanced over, I noticed tiny buds peeking through the soil. These three survivors had weathered snow storms, neglect and uncertainty. I dug them up and put them in fresh soil with some fungicide to prevent the blight and they’re looking fabulous! 🌸 So here’s to Penny’s peonies—symbols of resilience and second chances. As we step into this new week the flowers have slowed down in the flower field. The cold nights and lack of sun has slowed everything right down. If as forecast the sun comes out this week and the temperatures, both night and day rise then hopefully more plants will start to produce flowers and bloom. Waiting in the wings to flower are Sweet William, cornflowers, foxgloves, sweet rocket, alliums and irises. One of the plants that is flowering despite the cold are the early flowering sweetpeas in the Polytunnel. The smell is stunning & very evocative. Have a good start to the week and let’s hope the sun is here to stay!

You can find them at the @chassellmarket or at our FARM STAND. This is how your dahlia flower will come. I wake them up in pots indoors, so they’re no fuss for you. Test your soil and amend as needed keeping nitrogen low or skip that and just amend your soil with a low nitrogen natural fertilizer, make sure the soil isn’t high in nitrogen, dahlias don’t like a lot of nitrogen- I.e. don’t put them where your animals were or you put a bunch of compost/ since animal manure is high in nitrogen- you’ll get more green less blooms. I use a bloom type booster, peat moss, coffee grounds, egg shells and fish comfrey emulsion. Our soil is more clay.. Next, I PINCH (meaning cut them when they have their first few sets of leaves) to produce more blooms. Then, let them almost dry between watering and watch them thrive. They love warm soil 60-70 degrees and will die in a frost. Slugs and bugs love them so use a deterrent. In the yoop, don’t plant until 6/15 to be safe and if we have an unexpected frost cover them up and make sure they stay warm. After that, they will take off. Red campion, a perfect perennial for a wildflower meadow look 🌸 . This beautiful plant is hardy in our zone (6a), blooms from late April through September, and is an awesome pollinator. The pink flowers are bursting with pollen and bring bees, butterflies and all kinds of good insects to your garden. Bonus, it can be used as a cut flower too! Great for making wildflower arrangements 🌸 . The mature plants can grow 2-3 feet tall and 2 feet wide. They full sun to part sun and are often seen along tree lines and in the forest. . I picked 5 “almost dead” plants from the Lowes clearance rack for $4 a plant last year and look at them now!!! All I did was plant and water. I highly recommend adding this beautiful perennial to your garden. It’s been a full on week!! Cold frames emptied, beds in the field planted, cold frames refilled, masses more seeds sown and yesterday I managed to prick out every seedling possible! Hurrah! No trays of forgotten seedling babies in my greenhouse!! Why all the activity?? All to do with the biodynamic calendar and it being the best time to do all these jobs according to moon cycles and therefore different pressures on the earth. I love the work rhythm that the calendar creates. And in amongst all the busyness, we’ve been tiptoeing around one of our compost bins! Avoiding getting too close, speaking in hushed tones when near by! Why? A wild duck has decided it’s the perfect place to lay her eggs! All 12 of them! Now this creates a problem?? How is she going to lead them to water through our rabbit proof fence once they’ve hatched? My current thoughts are either paddling pool or duck flap? What do you think?? 🦆

Just like a kid in a sweet shop! I couldn’t decide which varieties of zinnia to grow this year, so “blow it”, I thought! Let’s make 2024 the year I trial zinnias! Lots and lots of them!! Eagle eyes will spots some great seed packets! Thanks to @chilternseeds and @plantsofdistinctionseeds where most of my seeds originate but also very excited this year to be growing zinnias from @greenandgorgeousflowers and @marlston_farmgirl Can’t wait to see them thrive. Finally with huge thanks to my flower growing and all round fab friend @thepickery I have managed to get three of the @floretflower varieties of zinnia. Super cool seeds which have travelled thousands of miles to get to me and been through more customs checks than you can shake a stick at, resulting in them making me so nervous to even open up the packets!! But I did and the first batch are sown! Hurrah! Roll on the heady days of summer with endless zinnias to choose from!
