A spring treat entirely from the farm with native plants, perennials from the cutting garden, and flowering bulbs for a special recipient. 🥰 This is my second spring with Leucojum ‘Gravetye Giant’ in my gardens and, while not yet a prolific producer, enough of those long dainty floaty stems have been arriving for them to be placed in extra special bouquet orders. It’s amazing how early the lilacs are this year (I did coax these ones along in my hoophouse; but my others are not far behind!). Tulip season is essentially over already and my earliest alliums are just starting to bloom weeks ahead of normal. 😮 It’s got me scratching my head as to what our May flowers will look like - will the peonies be early too? ✨HAPPY PLACE✨ Yes yes yes! Me in my happy place! If we chat regularly you’re probably sick of hearing how much I love spending time in the garden (as opposed to doing all that pesky admin I also have to do). But look at that view! It’s the best workplace come rain and shine - no matter the weather I get joy from this space, some new treasure every day. I am so content when I’m outside with my hands in the soil, weeding, planting out, picking (for the first hour 😂) and just getting garden jobs done. It’s the best feeling to spend a whole day out there ticking jobs off the list, feeling present and productive. I realise that says a lot about me and what makes me happy 😆 It is a constant juggle between all the things that need doing and I’d like more time outside without distraction. Today, I listened to another lecture from Grace Community Church about Puritans on the Family by Jeremy Walker. He preached how the Puritans believed that all our comfortable relations, the relationships we have with other people, are reflections of the great reality of Christ in His mercy toward us. Hence, the relation of my husband. I was brought to reflect on who my husband has become in the past eight years of living here together, the shedding of his identity as well, and the resurrection of the Spirit within him, too. It has greatly aided in mine. In our family. Our kids. The reality and truth itself is in Christ… and today I can sense more profoundly- what Christ has taken upon us both. Why we were brought out here. Who we were then. And the solace that we both find outside for His glory, in His garden, that He has allowed us to steward- together. Yesterday it was the flowers, styling and photography workshop which I held here with my friend Ale of @bohemia_photos. Guests spent the morning arranging flowers with me, then styling fruit and flowers to make a flat lay in a box with Ale. After lunch she spent time with everyone teaching them to style their arrangements to achieve the Dutch masters look she is so known for. There was much talk about cameras, lenses, apps and tripods! Such a happy day that I will remember for a long time. w e e k . 1 7 It was another busy week on the farm bustling with activity, finishing off the week with the Cumberland spring market I had a delightful time connecting with fellow gardening and flower enthusiasts. Though I miss these markets, I’m hopeful for future pop-ups. When I was a young child, I remember riding down the road with my mom or my great aunt on our way to visit "The Blueberry Lady". We bought baskets and baskets of blueberries from her backyard bushes every summer. It was decades later before I even learned her real name. But even then, the name The Blueberry Lady stuck. Now, I walk into a local business or get to chit-chatting at a gathering of friends and someone says, "Hey! Aren't you the flower girl?!" It brings back such sweet memories for me of all those trips to visit The Blueberry Lady. Am I disappointed that someone doesn't know my given name? Not in the slightest. I am thrilled and honored that the beauty of the flowers I care for have a reputation all their own. A lone Gladiola. My first love of flowers, awareness of them, was from a Publix aisle in Miami. We would walk down Biscayne and shop for the week. The salt air was our friend. The few stems were a treat for the week. Along with a package of Cuban merengues. I would eat them on the walk home. We still have the cloth bags Publix released, their first wave effort towards turning green. Now, twenty years later, this is what I think of when I hold my lone Gladiola. She started it all. And this is what Saturday night looks like now. Hosing the porches off. Watering the garden. The air is different. No Cuban merengues. I stand in this one home and yet another resides within me. Ellie came to me with a very clear idea of her and her fiancé, Jamie’s colour palette - burgundy, ivory and navy. As you’ve probably guessed, true navy is a particularly rare colour to find in the flower world, never mind when you are trying to work with the most seasonal flowers but the wedding in March!! However, that didn’t stop me from finding a solution in the form of this gorgeous anemone, that has the most beautiful navy centre, which complemented the Jamie’s suit wonderfully. ✨GROWING✨ It’s great to have some behind the scenes pictures of the things I spend most of my time doing… It’s almost the end of April and although I have sown thousands of seeds there are still more to sow. Yesterday I was sowing more zinnias, sunflowers, celosia, salpiglossis amongst others. Now is the time to see what has done well, notice any gaps, sow successions of those essentials that you always need more of like ammi and orlaya and gypsophila. There is so much behind the flowers. Hours and hours, months and months of work, sowing seeds, caring for seedlings. Playing with the flowers is the very tip of the iceberg, the icing on the cake when you’re a grower, at least for me that’s how it feels. I love all of it, no one part can be separated from the rest, they are all intertwined in my experience. Growing informing floristry, floristry informing growing. It has been a fast and furious tulip season! They came and went nearly two weeks earlier than last year. We have however learnt over the years that no two seasons are the same, and our changeable climate means there’s no guarantee of exactly what is available when. But to be honest that’s half the fun! The next wave of loveliness will include Sweet Williams, Iris, Alium, Orlaya and Viburnum Opulus. Perfectly poised! Tulipa Menton harvested yesterday. A symphony of colours in one flower - these will change from salmon to coral then rose then pink. This year I have been harvesting tulips on the bulb and storing them dry in tall boxes.
