Yesterday was spent with the farmers we bought our last year’s sheng from. We drank through several lots and came across the same issues while sampling gushu sheng from other areas in Xishuangbanna and Lincang; the drought conditions in these parts of Yunnan has caused much of the tea to be extremely bitter and lacking in flavor and balance. It’s possible that the bitterness will mellow in the next few weeks, so we are going to wait and see before we commit to pressing any new sheng. We spent the afternoon exploring shou puer. In recent years there has been a growing movement in the Menghai area towards making small batch shou puer using high grade material. Conventional thinking has cautioned towards this, as the knowledge and skill set needed to safely ferment shou was thought to be found solely at larger tea companies, who also claimed that large amounts of leaf material was needed to properly ferment the tea. Now we are seeing former employees of these companies who have the experience in fermenting, along with some other adventurous souls start to bring gushu shou puer to market. The old Chinese. What is behind this picture? I met him around 10 years ago in Beijing. He every day played a Chinese wind instrument, called sheng, in the park of the Temple of Heaven. I visited him nearly every weekend and listened to him and watched other men playing mahjong. I found peace inside me, many kilometers away from home. One day a Chinese friend accompanied me, because I told her about this friendly guy playing the sheng. She was curious to see what I - crazy western guy - find so special. She talked to him and he said: „I will turn 100 in a certain time, but I never played for a one man audience who changes his facial expressions in seconds. I feel honored and I have the feeling, he is the reason I’ve learned to play the sheng.“ We were able to communicate via his instrument and his music. I never will forget him. This picture is still in my living room. Today I'm brewing up @settlingtea's 2008 Xiang Zhu Qing raw pu'erh! The last couple years, I've slowly but quite steadily fallen more in love with sheng productions from Lincang such as this one. It's actually a really great example of the qualities I've loved with the pressings I've explored; smooth and more medium bodied with a bit of a sweeter and more fruity lean, but still with some greener and more woody and mineral elements. There was a steep from this session (the second or third) that was especially striking to me because it had such rich and nuanced notes of fresh summer peaches, linden honey, and caramelized bananas or plantains. The banana note was so unexpected and not something I've experienced very much at all with raw pu'erh, but it felt right in place nestled alongside the gentle flavors of stonefruit, nectar, birch bark, and dandelion greens.
I’ve been incredibly busy lately and I really haven’t brewed any tea in a while. Today I’m taking some time to enjoy this beautiful @white2tea 2023 Milan Maocha Top Shelf oolong. This is a tea I could just drink every single day and be happy. The balance is incredible. That roast characteristic is so nice alongside the floral honeyed sweetness. It’s extremely comforting and has such a nice lasting finish. This was damn near impossible to break up my sample to brew though 😂

Tea: Harlequin Vendor: @white2tea Origin: blend that was sent to Fujian to be roasted by oolong roasters and pressed in Yunnan. Mrs Worldwide over here. Notes: Grassy field aromatics and flavor. Astringent for the first few steeps puckered my mouth a bit. I was expecting a heavy charcoal roast flavor but it wasn’t there. Later steeps were giving the fresh cut melon flavor. Like the song, it may be rough and gruff but really it’s got a sweet meaning. What may scare you initially will prove itself later. Now that I am well and truly embedded with the world of sheng, I am starting to discover the kind of sheng I tend to gravitate to the most and within that process, I am also discovering that there are certain shengs that just don’t suit my palate, and sadly Young Gushu 2022 is one of them. The dry leaves of this tea had muted notes of mossy rocks and a subtle florality. Due to the lighter aroma, I went into this session unsure of what to expect from this tea, though I was hoping that it would come to life as I moved through the session. The liquor started off a pale clear yellow and became a darker dandelion yellow as the steeps went on, before returning back to the pale yellow as the session came to an end, with a strong floral aroma. The first steep was light but sweet, with a subtle vegetal finish. The second steep was much stronger and had a marine vegetal quality, a fantastic level of butteriness, and was more on the savoury side than I expected. That was balanced out by a sweetness that manifested in notes of sweet-sour star fruit and pastel de natas with a slightly caramelised top and buttery flaky crust. Each cup finishes with notes of charcoal embers and brown rock sugar. Every steep had a medium length finish with less bite than I was expecting. The bite that was present didn’t stick around for long and petered out into notes of brown rock sugar. It did however get stronger at steep five but it was fleeting and didn’t stick around for long at all, transforming into a light creaminess and ending in a green apple that lingers at the back of the mouth. I don’t know what to think about this session overall because this tea has some fantastic notes, however this was my very first time trying a Young Gushu from Mei Leaf and it didn't quite live up to the hype that surrounds these yearly releases. I do have a sample of the 2023 release though, so I am interested to see how it compares. Have you tried this tea? San Mai Qiao Mu 2023 Having a left over of last years mao cha 毛茶 unpressed pu’er. It’s from 乔木 qiao mu taller trees 🌳 that do not (yet) qualify as gushu - ancient trees. I think this tea would still qualify as Meng Song area tea. The wet leaves are still very green, might have to do with the way how they were processed. The smell is amazing, very flowery. The taste is quite bitter and astringent. 2007 Xi Zi Hao Diangu XHZ productions are a double edged sword for me: the quality of the material ist mostly good and the teas are either well produced (those I like) or very much "over-produced" (which I dislike) like this one. It has strong resemblance to an Hongcha - very much oxidation in the processing. Some might like it but I'm more orthodox regarding Sheng production: the tea should be as near to nature as possible - otherwise the more delicate things like depth and Qi will be destroyed like it is the case with most heavily processed types of tea. #tea #puerh #sheng #teaware

1960's Six Character JingXi Hui MengChen 六汉字 荆溪惠孟臣 small xi capacity (i think 80 i have to measure it) hong ni This gorgeous pot still has its original wax on the exterior🥹. There is one catch however; it was previously used as an ink pot. To many, this comes as a surprise however this was a very common practice back in the day. So much so that Factory 1 produced pots specifically for ink that can be still found today if lucky. It may alarm you to drink out of a pot that held ink that may potentially have been toxic, however, its not something I personally worry about. Firstly, the ink they were using back then likely wasn't dangerous and secondly I have a 70s pot i use for puer that still wears a black stain on its spout and received but a few light boiling sessions. I didn't even use per carbonate. It is one of my favorite pots and I have had 1000 offers to buy it! Rather than do a deep cleaning of this pot and sell it like its never seen a splattering of ink, i would rather just offer it to someone who would appreciate the nice discount and doesn't have qualms about it's sordid past. For this tea, the qi is absolutely the name of the game, and it's a heavy hitter. This qi feels all encompassing to me, like it's affecting me on a mental and a physical state. With budget puerh (yes, I'd still say this tea is relatively budget friendly), it's often times hard to find a tea with heavy qi that also checks the texture and the flavor box, and that rings true with this tea. Although the texture and flavor certainly weren't bad - in fact, they were good - they didn't really develop much through the session. They stayed pretty samey, and I kept on trying to grasp for different flavors but they just weren't present. 2015 Baifuzangcang Taichi Chawang New brand for me - and I'm not so sure about the name of this tea but the meaning probably is not the martial art but the literal meaning of the characters: highest (太) pole (極) teaking (茶王) - meaning some special king of Gaogan trees. Given the similarities to the "out there" 2020 Rareness 6 of prSK, this could indeed be the case. Anyways: an interesting tea - not quite on the level of the Rareness 6 but it has a similar vibe! 2001 Chenyuan Hao Yiwu Pure Gushu A real pure Gushu Sheng of that age with a perfect storage is a real treasure: in my opinion this is the role modle all modern boutique productions have to strive for! In the past I have railed against a particular "root vegetable" flavor found in some Sheng, Shou, and Heicha. It tastes similar to beets, and in the most extreme cases tastes similar to the smell of a distressed ladybug. That harsh aroma and flavor seems to be from wet storage methods, and that distaste has led me to prioritize pu'erh that has been dry stored. Recently my stores of tea have begun to dwindle, and because I am saving for a big, necessary purchase I won't be buying new tea for a little while. As a result I am brewing up a lot of teas that might not have been first choice. For example: today I am sipping on Hildegard von Bingen Shou pu'erh from @westchinatea , and it's hitting all the right notes. I never disliked this tea but I feel like I'm getting so much more from it now that I'm a little more experienced. Preferences change with time, and I'm happy to have the opportunity to change my opinion on something I've felt the same way about for so long. This afternoon, I'm steeping up some @bitterleafteas 2023 "In Bloom" Jingmai raw pu'erh. Slowly but surely I'm putting a dent in this cake. It's soft and smooth, and the gentle notes straw and white Spring flowers. In particular, I keep latching on to the fresh, dewy taste of lilacs and orchids and the sweet honey-tinged notes of Prairie grass in the finish. It's been very relaxing, and I don't think I could have asked for a better tea to sip on throughout this lazy afternoon... 🌱🍵🪻

Today, I dug my cake of @white2tea's 2017 "Happy Anniversary, Baby" sheng pu'erh out of storage for an early morning session. This is such an amazing tea with a really understated profile to go alongside such a warm, glowy body feel. It builds slowly, with smooth yet powerful notes of tobacco and pipe smoke, incense, and undertones of red fruits like lingonberry or currants - more jammy, though, and not tart/bright. The liquor feels thick and heavy on the palate despite having more of a delicate-leaning flavour composition. Part of me wants to just leave this tea to age indefinitely, but it's also something I want to make sure to enjoy - and not just for fancy occasions. I think we all deserve to enjoy these special sort of teas on even the most mundane feeling sort of days.

Continuing my exploration of @settlingtea with a morning session of their 2016 Smoky Whiskey sheng pu'erh. Even though this tea isn't actually smoked or alcohol-infused, I can't even begin to explain how excited I got when I smelled the dry leaf of this tea sample. True to name, it does have a natural smoky edge (which comes even more alive once infused) with an oaky undertone that really evokes the nose of a good whisky. Steeped up it's pretty smooth with whisps of smoke, Bourbon Vanilla, and peat moss with a finish of oak and cooling camphor. Soft at first, but with a presence that builds into something quite powerful feeling by the mid-session. It sneaks up on you, though. Basically, it's sneaky and slick but in a good type of way. Definitely very, very accurately named and soooo up my alley!!

2019 Bi Yun Hao Mahei Dahei Senlin Guoyoulin Gaogan Gushu (碧云号 麻黑 大黑森林 国有林 高杆 古树) Probably the Sheng with the longest / most complicated name i has so far 😅 Although the Dahei Senlin in the name confused me: until now I've thought this is an place on the Daheishan in Yibang - but probably it's like the "Water Source Area" from last week's tea an descriptive term and not an actual place?
