Fuglefestival 2024! 🎊 The Bird Festival 2024 in Skagen just ended and we look back on some amazing days! 🤩 The festival took mainly place in front of @detgraafyr where many bird lovers came to chat, look at the newest optics or listen to one of the interesting lectures. 😊 When a Alpine Accentor (Alpenjernspurv) was found, the crowd quickly disappeared and went to see the rare bird. We ringed a Wryneck (Vendehals) at Kabeltromlen, so there were many people, we were able to show the bird with its special neck-turning behavior. How is migration going in Skagen? It’s going great! 😍 After low numbers in early April due to the col weather in central Europe the migration has started and brought some great RARITIES! 🤩 Finally the raptor migration started and several days with 30+ Hen Harriers made it fun to spend as much time outside as possible. 17 different species of raptors were observed this week! Finally, Pallid Harriers (Steppehøg) arrive in usual high numbers. On the 28th of april 7 different birds were seen. A Black-winged Kite (Blå Glente) was seen for two days, before it flew out to the sea. This striking Short-eared Owl (Mosehornugle) caused a short but great night for us volunteers, since the beautiful bird was just the second ever that could be ringed by Skagen Bird Observatory. 😍 When we saw three birds hunting next to the lighthouse in the early evening, we opened our Owl net for our monitoring project. The warm weather with migration supporting winds brought a nice variety of raptor species (Rovfugle) up to Skagen today. The highlight was this Golden Eagle (Kongeørn) which just turned up over our heads! 😍 Like many other birds, too, this bird did not want to cross the sea so it turned around and went back southwest again. Schmarotzerraubmöwe. (Arctic Skua) Für alle, die sich schonmal gefragt haben, warum der bräunliche Vogel diesen Namen hat, gibt es im zweiten Slide die Antwort und hier die passende Erklärung: Anstelle sich die Nahrung auf direktem Wege zu beschaffen, bedienen sich Schmarotzerraubmöwen an der Beute von anderen Vögeln. 😄 Hierfür schmarotzert die Raubmöwe meist bei Seeschwalben (2. Foto), aber auch Möwen wie Dreizehenmöwen müssen hin und wieder herhalten. Aufgrund dieser interessanten Verhaltensweise hat der Vogel seinen Namen mehr als verdient! 🤓 Test für die Profis: Wie alt ist der fotografierte Vogel (Foto aus dem Juli)? 💥 🇬🇧: The most typical behavior of Arctic Skuas is stealing their food from other birds. Yesterday, we had an exciting find in the centre of Skagen with 36 Bohemian Waxwings (Silkehale) (Bombycilla garrulus) feeding outside Lidl. These are always a pleasure to see and we were able to observe them for 15 minutes from a very close distance. Bohemian Waxings are one of only three species in the taxonomic family Bombycillidae and the only one to breed in Europe. When not breeding, they range widely searching for fresh food, giving them the 'Bohemian' part to their name. One similarity they share with us is that they too can struggle from the effects of too much fermented fruit! Bearded reedling! 😱 During the summer, the Bearded reedling (Skægmejse) primarily feeds on insects that it catches in the reed beds. However, during the winter, it feeds on seeds from the reeds. As the seeds are harder to digest than insects, the bearded reedling's stomach changes in the fall. It becomes more muscular to grind the seeds. Siberian Stonechat!!! 😍 Today I found this beautiful „Siberian“ Stonechat in the heathland close to Batteriskoven, Skagen. 🎊 It showed up very well before it disappeared and was not found again. First of all, we thought that it must be a new bird, since the one at Grenen was seen there at the same day. When we heared, the Grenen bird left the area, we compared pictures and it seems to be the same bird. That’s really funny, I (re)found the bird on it’s last day in Skagen again - 3km down the coast. 🤯 The pale colours, the uniform cream-coloured rump and the white throat are good features to identify the species-complex. We have recently ringed a Firecrest (Rødtoppet Fuglekonge)! 😍🔥 The Firecrest is among the smallest of Denmark's bird species. The Firecrest resembles the Goldcrest but it is slightly larger and more colorful and contrasting than the Goldcrest. The most distinctive features are the black eye stripe and the broad, white eyebrow. This stunning Blyth’s Pipit (Mongolsk Piber) has been seen at Grenen for the last 10 days! 😍 It is just the fifth record for Denmark and the third for Skagen. 🤯 In flight it might look a bit like a Richard‘s Pipit (Storpiber), but the sound (pic 2: spectogram) is a good feature to identify this very eastern species. One more good feature to identify this species is the shorter bill and tail, which gives the pipit more the jizz of a Meadow Pipit instead of a Richard‘s Pipit. Our bird has just three tail feathers left and it also lost a primary - possibly due to a close encounter with a bird of prey? Today, we ringed two Arctic Redpolls (Hvidsisken)! 😍 The Arctic Redpoll looks similar to the Lesser and Common Redpoll but has a much whiter and lighter appearance, with a rump that resembles a sugar cube. The Arctic Redpoll is rarely seen in our region during the winter months, and many of the ones observed here are in flocks of Common Redpolls. This week we caught the „perfect“ flock of Lesser Redpolls (Lille Gråsisken) at Kabeltromlen. Two out of three birds had already a ring! 😍 One was ringed in SWEDEN 🇸🇪 and one was ringed in GERMANY 🇩🇪!! The funniest part is, that the german one was ringed this april in Horumersiel, the home ringing site from Simon Jr., who caught the bird now as a volunteer in Skagen. On Monday October 2nd, we ringed the second Yellow-browed Warbler of the season! 😎 Exactly one week later than the first bird. This bird was slightly different from the first one as it looked to have molt limit in the greater coverts. This molt limit is not typical in this species, as it has only been observed in around 1 out of 200 Yellow-browed Warblers in Mongolia. Notice how the marked feather have yellow edges, whereas the other feathers in the same row are white. Putative Eastern Yellow Wagtail (Østlig Gul Vipstjert) at Grenen!!! We found this young bird on our way back from the daily seabird counts. If accepted, it will be the first record ever for Denmark! 😍😍😍 One of the best features to identify this species, is its call, so we show you the spectogram in the third slide. Today we took in a Arctic Skua (Almindelig Kjove) at Grenen! It was a very unexpected first for the station. The young bird of the dark morph was unfortunately weakened by the strong storms of the last days, so we gave it to the wildlife rescue center. What a GREAT night! 😍 If you would tell somebody, that we went 2:30h by train just to have the chance to maybe catch and ring one bird, they would call us crazy. There was a lot of excitement today when not one but two Greenish Warblers (Lundsanger) were ringed. 🤩 These beautiful birds are very rarely caught; previously there has only been one individual ringed at Skagen Bird Observatory making our birds the second and third ringing records ever for the Fuglestation. Nightjar (Natravn) 😍 Last night we had the luck to catch two nightjars at the same time. One juvenile bird (picture 1) and one 2nd cy female (picture 2+3). It was nice to compare those two to learn more about ageing them. If you compare the two birds, you can see, that the female from last year has more worn feathers with less light edges and a moult limit. Can you see the difference? Exciting news!! 🤩 When we successfully ringed this European Storm Petrel (Lille Stormsvale) at 01am on 28 July, we did not know that this bird represented a turning point in Storm Petrel ringing in Danmark. Only 49 hours later this bird was recaptured in Utsira, Norway! 🤯 The distance between Skagen and Utsira is about 377 km! This is the first Storm Petrel ringed in Denmark that was controlled again. While the bird weighed 27.6 grams at ringing, where she arrived in Norway only 24.9 grams, 2.7 grams less, which is due to the long flight path of the small bird. What an incredible record! 🤯🤩 Utsira: Since the beginning of trapping attempts in 1992, about 1500 storm petrels have been ringed here, of which about 170 have been recovered. The oldest bird recovered was 26 years old (the European record is 33 years old). The last 4 nights we have successfully caught and ringed European Storm Petrels (Lille Stormsvale). 😍 On the first night we were able to catch 2 birds. Unfortunately, the other nights were unsuccessful. In 2021, Storm Petrels were ringed here for the first time in Denmark with mist nets (picked up on a ship had already been ringed before). At that time we had 3, one of them had a ring from Norway. 🇳🇴🇩🇰 What an exciting recatch! Last year we were able to ring not only 2 Storm Petrels but also a Leach’s Storm Petrel (Stor Stromsvale) for the first time. A 3cy Long-tailed Skua (Lille Kjove) has spent the past days at the tip of Skagen, allowing fantastic views of it hunting and even mobbing raptors such as Honey Buzzards (Hvepsevåge)! ✨ These birds breed high up in the tundra like Lappland and are known for their protective behaviour around their nesting site (so watch your head if you ever have the pleasure of hiking in the north 🙈) 🏔️ They are easily recognised by their long tail, which is still missing on our bird as they moult into their adult plumage at 4 years of age. Little Owls (Kirkeugle)🦉🥰 Unfortunately, their population in Denmark has declined drastically over the past decades. While it was a common breeding bird in the 1960s with about 1000 breeding pairs, there were only 11 (!) pairs left in 2022, most of them in Nordjylland. Therefore, the breeding success of the few is closely monitored and protected. As if I’m enacting the title to a Virginia Woolf book, today’s adventure takes me To the Lighthouse. Once there, I visit the bird station which has an interactive exhibition about birds and sand, and then climb the 202 steps to the top of the lighthouse. A beautiful male King Eider (Kongeedderfugl) was found during morning observations by one of our volunteers!👑 These birds are breeding in the high Arctic, more northerly than our Common Eider (Edderfugl, the bird in the front). The Red Crossbill (Lille Korsnæb, Loxia curvirostra) is a stocky colorful bird. This species has a very special beak, with mandibles crossed at the tip used to open conifer cones. They can breed different times during the year, also before spring, like in January or February, according to the availability of the food resources.
