👣. It's my 500th post, so I decided to bring back a few of my old favourites, including my very first post on Instagram back in 2017, the mating black-shouldered kites (middle-left). . Of course I had to include a selfie with Maxi, as many of my photos are taken at our local nature reserve where she insists on patrolling most mornings of the week. I tag along with my camera, and she's very obliging whenever I stop to watch wildlife. . I consider my self-taught journey through wildlife photography over the last 12 years as a very long, shallow curve (a steep curve would mean I picked it up quickly!). Composing a photograph didn't seem to come naturally to me, and I mostly took up wildlife photography as an extra excuse to observe and document animals. However, as I continue to improve I'm increasingly seeing photography as a way to intimately connect with animals and capture special wild moments. Looking back, I'm actually pretty pleased with some of my earliest photographs. It's always good to remember how, where, and why I started too. A few last snapshots from Taboga island! After lunch I tagged along with my company colleagues to the beach. There were actually two beaches on the island, we went to the non-touristy one where there was literally no one else! It was hardly off the beaten path either, literally right by where we disembarked our catamaran. 😂 No sooner had we dropped our belongings in the sand and taken off running into the waves than we heard shouting from behind us. We saw a local man pointing and waving and quickly realized he was warning us about the gigantic sting ray in the water!! There were not one, but TWO rays, both shown in videos here - it was my first time seeing rays that big in the wild and not in an aquarium, and it was amazing! Call me the starfish whisperer. This morning I found 4 starfish washed up on the sand dune turning hard and dry. I thought they were dead but when I carried them into the shallow water, I could see their hundreds of little tube feet start to move and bury themselves into the mud. 👣. Sunrise behind the coastal dunes where the swamp wallabies graze amongst the beaded glasswort. Glasswort is a luscious and succulent ground cover that holds the sand flats behind the dunes intact, helping to protect the shallow lagoon of Brou Lake from being filled-in with windblown sand. Was enjoying a walk through the tide pools on the Big Island when I ran across this bird hopping from lava rock to lava rock. Walking on the beach today, as the tide was coming in, we thought about how it looked and how it would all change again after high tide. 🐌 Identifying this little guy was a tough challenge. I assume it is a Peronia Peronii or Peronia Verruculata. Either way, it belongs to the family of Onchidiidae, which describes a species of air-breathing sea slug. This slug does not have a shell in adult age, whilst it still has a shell in larval stage. It does not have gills like most other sea slugs. Persephona mediterranea, the mottled purse crab. This ebaliinid crab can largely be found in the sandy shallows of the Gulf of Mexico where they feed on any detritus they happen to come upon. Grapsus grapsus, the sally lightfoot crab, This grapsid crab has a rather expansive range being found on rocky shores not only in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, but also throughout western america as far north as the Gulf of California and as far south as northern Chile along with where they're most well known from their role in BBC's Planet Earth 2, the Galapagos islands. Every day I'm always learning, finding things I've never seen before! Today we had a beautiful spring tide that exposed the seabed of Brighton beach, so I ventured away from the pebbles and squelched my way on top of the sloppy sand. Of course the cobalt blue seaglass came first, then the delicious peach of smoothed quartz. The GREEN BLOB, caused some trauma as I thought it was seaglass at first I found out through the @thewildlifetrusts website that it is in fact a Green-leaf worm egg sac. There were lots of them! I found half of a sea potato, their shells are incredibly delicate. Someone's lost keys, hopefully they've found a replacement by now 😂 Then I saw my first ever lug worm, usually I just see the spiral trails of their poo which I've included above. And finally, the common whelk, it stood out against the beige sand. I never tire of seagulls. I used to hear a lot more laughing gulls as a child. It was one of THE sounds that really told you you were on or near water. It’s one of my favourite memory association sounds. Nowadays, I rarely hear them anymore. . 👣 . Old mate swampy has had a few encounters with ticks by the looks of his ears. Either that or his ears are torn from fights. I've seen plenty of younger and female swamp wallabies with the same 'eaten' ears from too many ticks though. They're brutal in the coastal vegetation.
