No, I’m Not A Hummingbird. Despite the iridescence, sleek build and long narrow beak, this Rufous Tailed Jacamar is not a member of the hummingbird family but is actually more closely related to the Bee Eaters of the Old World. These insectivorous birds are found in forest environments of Trinidad and Tobago and are often spotted as they fly from a preferred perch to grab insects out of the air and return to munch on them from that favored spot. Singin In The Rain 🌧️ After a scorching two months of high temperatures, little rainfall and numerous wildfires, Trinidad and Tobago were blessed with nation wide April showers yesterday. All were grateful including this male Silver Beaked Tanager. April rains, which are a prelude to the rainy season which begins in June, help to drive the breeding season of birds to a frenzied pitch as flowers, fruits and bugs tend to become abundant after the onset of these showers. Carnival Creature Trinidad and Tobago is known worldwide for it’s annual pre lent Carnival celebrations. In fact our Carnival is second only to Brazil’s in terms of scale and revelry and is the stuff of bucket list material for all serious partyers. Today’s Hummingbird feature, the Tufted Coquette, with his ornate tufts, iridescent green throat and bright orange mohawk is a creature seemingly created for a Trinidad and Tobago Carnival parade. Despite his diminutive size of only 2.6 inches, this guy is an absolute showstopper. This rainforest hummer weighs around 0.09 ounces and is a very highly sought after species by local and visiting birders to Trinidad. It is not found on Tobago. Great year for vagrant migratory bird sightings in the Alphonse Group! 🐦 🪶 ICS Seychelles has been collecting sighting data on birds since 2007 which is one of the reasons the Alphonse Group has the highest number of migratory bird species recorded of any of the outer islands. Regional and global weather phenomena can greatly influence the number of migrants that turn up in the outer islands as birds get blown off course on their annual migrations from Europe to Africa or their routes fly-over these islands and they simply stop to rest before resuming their journey. An Icon Toucans are perhaps one of the most iconic birds of the rainforests of the neotropics. The species pictured today; The Channel Billed Toucan, is the only species of this famous family to be found in Trinidad (it is not found in Tobago). In fact, Trinidad is the only Caribbean island to have these beauties in the wild; a testament to the island’s ancient connection to the South American continent. These canopy dwellers are common and widespread throughout all of the forest habitats (except mangrove forests) on Trinidad and are always heard if not easily seen due to their penchant for hanging out in the canopy. Another Sweet Mango This female Black Throated Mango (see previous post) was photographed in the middle of the day with the sun bearing down intensely. My guess was that this beautiful girl was cooling off. She kept this pose and/or many variations of it for a long time. It was quite remarkable. I have seen hummingbirds perched many times for long periods but this was by far the longest I have ever witnessed without going on a feeding run. These sorts of experiences are for me the most enjoyable aspect of birding. The opportunity to witness their behavior and to watch them experience their environment is always amazing. Birds in Morocco. Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra). While cleaning up my hard drive during a bit of a break from social media, I came across several photos from last year's trip to Morocco that I have not shared, most of which during two sessions in the Hassilabied Gardens. These sessions were probably my highlight of the trip even though I loved every moment and every species that I saw during that week. The reason is that we were there at the end of April, so the peak of spring migration, and there were thousands of birds stopping to rest and feed as it is the only area with water and vegetation. A new species would appear at every corner, behind every bush, on top of every tree, it was absolutely incredible! I will share some photos from those sessions over the next few post hoping to highlight the diversity of the species seen there... we probably missed a few but what we saw was more than enough!

Taking a trip down memory lane and found some of my first reviews. How lovely to remember this wonderful day with wonderful people My wife and I booked a weekend of birding with A 2 Zebra Adventures, Lynette Boshoff was our guide. The venue was at Hartenbos Private Game Lodge. We started our hike in the wilderness early on Saturday morning with a small group of very exiting ladies. Lynette's birding skills are amazing, she has a fantastic sense of hearing and very enthusiastic about finding as many birds as possible. Lynette was excellent in identifying a lot of the birds by call and her knowledge of the wildlife in general and the vegetation in the area is exceptional. By the end of our trip we had seen more than 50 species including many of the endemics and special birds of the region. Our guide Lynette was the best, very knowledgeable and fun to be with. Looking Forward To A Sweet Year! I don’t know what this Brown Violet Ear Hummingbird is thinking about but one thing is for certain, he is looking forward to a sweet New Year filled with all the sugary nectar he can find 😉 These birds are canopy dwellers of the rain forests of Trinidad’s Northern Range Mountains but can be habituated to frequent hummingbird feeders adjacent to their preferred habitat. They are not found on Tobago. Forest Friday Denizens! Today’s Forest Friday post takes on a bit of a twist. Instead of a forest pic or a post about the forest itself, I figured I’d feature a common but beautiful resident of the forests of Trinidad at all levels (it is not found in Tobago). The Green Honeycreeper featured in the picture of today’s post is a member of the Tanager family and is almost exclusively a frugivore except during the breeding season when insects and small invertebrates are also incorporated into the diet. These guys are straight up showstoppers and no photograph ever seems to do their stunning plumage justice. Green Honeycreepers are just one of the hundreds of intriguing and charismatic avian species that call the forests of Trinidad and Tobago home. What’s Better Than Tobago? TWO Tobagos!!! :) The picture featured in today’s post is the view from Batteaux Bay, Tobago towards the island of Little Tobago. This little island situated in North Eastern Tobago on the Atlantic Coast is host to one of the largest sea bird nesting colonies in the South Eastern Caribbean. Large colonies of Laughing Gulls, Red Footed Boobies and Magnificent Frigate Birds can be viewed from many vantage points around this special little island. The undeniable headliner though has to be the Red Billed Tropic Bird. This seraphic looking sea bird is grace personified and is a must on any visiting birder’s list when visiting Trinidad and Tobago. One of the most unexpected experiences I have ever had in the time I have been an avid birder has to be waking along the forested trails of Little Tobago scanning the canopy for Dry Forest birds only to encounter a long line of Laughing Gulls walking along the trail very busily. Sea birds walking in the forest was not something I was expecting at all. Trinidad and Tobago are truly unique islands with a biodiversity that has to be seen to be believed!! They are truly Bucket List material. And Yes......Another Backyardie Today's Backyardie is actually a member of the Tanager family which is quite fitting for another alliterative Tanager Tuesday!! White Lined Tanagers are very common birds in Trinidad and Tobago and can be found in backyards, parks, gardens and even forests throughout both islands. These Backyardies feed on the fruits from common garden trees such as banana, mango, papaya and many others and like many of their other Tanager cousins, they will also feast on insects such as Winged Termites and other small insects and invertebrates. The bird featured here is a handsome male while the female is a lovely rufous brown. Back To The Backyardies After a couple of posts highlighting some scenic natural landscapes in Trinidad and Tobago, today's post continues my feature on some of the common backyard bird species to be found on both of these remarkable islands. The Tropical Mockingbird highlighted today is a close relative of the Northern Mockingbird of North America and has a very similar appearance. It is a musical species of backyards, parks, gardens and light woodland and feeds on insects, small invertebrates and fruit.
