I looked through the one on the bottom left — it took me by surprise (one of the blessings of a poor memory?). It’s a promotional viewer for a #1995 video game called #BermudaSyndrome and has 10 stills from the game in it (incl the title slide). Amazing! I’ve tried to take some pics through the eyehole but it was nearly impossible. A little peek anyhow.

Let's go along a hypothetical journey. Imagine you live in a small country that just went through a revolution in part due to vast economic and social imbalance. Your nearest large neighbor, who sent many wealthy businesses and tourists to your country without concern that none of the money was getting to the poorer areas, takes it badly (as if it was their problem). Now let's also postulate that the large country repeatedly tries to send in undercover people to overthrow the new regime unsuccessfully and imposes a crushing economic embargo on your country flexing its world wide influence and military might. If that economic blockade lasted say 60 years with no end in sight, all without ever having achieved anything but harm to the citizens of the small country, what would you do?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Be resilient is all you can do. It's amazing how resilient a population can be when pressed. This little store in Havana is an example. It was closed when I walked by. Only two sleeping cats (that chose to sleep on camouflaging colors either by chance or design) were present. The only items for sale as far as I could tell were eggs. The counter and walls had not seen new paint, plaster or tile in quite some time and yet it was still in business. This is all a gross simplification of course but the general principle is clear. The form of government didn't do this, the influence and interference of another economically stronger country did. 2014 February Bhutan and more specifically Bumthang. Bumthang is considered by many the most sacred region in Bhutan based on the number of monasteries and temples. During one of our many excursions, we came across this gentle man standing in front of a “general store and bar”. His face clearly evoked a lifetime of experiences and stories. Project No.17 Photographing Toadstools and Fungi No.3 Maybe strangely I never had any interest in learning the names of the T and F. For me it was just a visual thing. I didn't need to know their Latin names to enjoy the form and variety of what I saw. I even made up some of my own names for my favourites. Wondering what the Latin is for Beautiful, Brown, Velvet Purses? Bellus, Brownicus, Velvetus Pursus. I knew "O" Level Latin would come in useful one day. Background When the first lockdown came at the end of March, 2020 I photographed trees cos. there was nowt else to photograph. When it all went ****-up again in September I moved on to Toadstools and Fungi. There were loads of them around - maybe it was a good year or maybe I was more in tune after spending a lot of time looking at trees. Either way I photographed T and F on an almost daily basis for 3 - 4 months with my trusty Sony RX100III that I rarely left home without. Despite there being loads of people around the T and F stayed in good condition, partly because I went off piste to find them. Project No.17 Photographing Toadstools and Fungi No.2 When I started photographing T and F I made a decision to leave scenes as they were. Going for perfection would have meant I would have taken very few images. Nature doesn't usually work that way. So apart from removing an occasional leaf that had fallen onto a toadstool, I left things pretty much as I found them when I took my shots. I found this little scene on the first morning I decided to get serious about T and F. Project No.16 Photographing Trees. No.9. And as autumn progressed I moved my attention to toadstools and fungi. It seemed to be a good season for them both, but maybe by this time I was more in tune and aware of my surroundings. This final image from my Trees project is a shot I took a couple of years ago. I always liked it and it sparked my interest in toadstools and fungi. With the renewed lockdown I again had loads of time on my hands and my attention moved on from trees. Project No.16 Photographing Trees. No.8. Ninety percent of my Trees project was done from April to June, 2020. When the first lockdown kicked in at the end of March the content of my hard drive changed instantly and totally from street portraits of strangers to tree stuff and stayed that way till restrictions eased at the end of May. From then I was back on the streets with a renewed energy, but the excitement on the streets was short lived. When new restrictions came in September it was back to trees for the autumn chapter. I am not a landscape photographer by inclination and my initial results did nothing for me. But there should be no surprise in that. My street portraits had improved a lot after photographing over 2,000 people. I wasn't going to nail autumn tree-scapes after ten minutes. But things did get better. This was possibly another sign that I was not handling lockdown very well. I had an early success during my psychedelic phase with this face of an owl. Project No. 16 Photographing Trees. No.4 As the year progressed I became more tuned in to the site and saw things that I probably would not have noticed otherwise. I never found out what this was but it was really interesting. It was on a dead tree and started off white and around 6" from top to bottom. It looked like the front of a pair of Y-Fronts, complete with the usual contents. Over a period of a couple of weeks it got smaller and smaller and eventually left a very small residue on the tree, like coffee grounds, before disappearing altogether. I could go in to around three inches. I don't know whether this is classed as Macro but it was an excellent feature and I used it a lot. Project No. 16. Photographing Trees. No.2 I then started looking at manipulation of nature! One of the things I noticed and liked is that on this particular site, Silver Birch gets a bright orange surface fungus that goes well with the colour of the bark. In this pic. I added a little black colouring via some charcoal from a burned stick that was lying nearby. And for the final touch I added a little bit of talcum powder for a snow effect - I may not have been handling lockdown very well at this point! Project No. 16. Photographing Trees. No.1 The place I started to photograph trees is close to home. It was a site for the dumping of waste that came out of the glass making process but it was planted with trees around 50 years ago - a lot of Silver Birch and some Oak. My first idea was to go a little bit psychedelic and after taking the shots I really went to town in post production. I actually thought I was going psychodelic until the spellchecker showed me the error of my ways. It was just a phase I went through - I am ok now.
