In fact, Leia wasn’t my first dog. I always had cats, and I never dreamed of having a dog. Maybe because I knew my parents wouldn’t allow me to have one. Then came university, independent life, my first job. I didn’t even think about a dog. I always thought: someday I’ll have a family, kids, a big house with a garden, that’s when I’ll get a dog. In my mind, a dog was not a dream but a part of a settled adult life. But then I met a neighbor who had a German Shepherd and a Spitz mix. She took the Spitz in out of kindness when his owner, also our neighbor, passed away. The Shepherd didn’t get along with the Spitz. The owner asked me to take care of the Spitz for a while. She hoped to find him a permanent home. And she thought the Spitz and I would like each other. He was a very clever boy who would wash his paws after a walk and patiently wait for me to dry them. I knew nothing about dogs. Neither how to feed them nor what they needed. And back then, there weren’t many good sources of information, and I had an interesting job that kept me busy. And I just knew it wasn’t the time to get a dog. I couldn’t give him attention he needed. I often had unexpected business trips. But the most important thing was — I just wasn’t ready. The dog eventually found his new family, and he’s doing well. And all I have left is one photo of very poor quality. Those who read my previous posts know that I wasn’t ready for Leia either. I got her in the midst of emotional burnout and depression. I still don’t have a family or a private house with a garden. But I knew the time was right now. I was internally confident in my decision and never regretted it. Dogs greatly change our lives, our schedules, our habits. ⚠️ ⚠️⚠️ ATTENTION (seeking behaviours) ⚠️⚠️⚠️ 🗣️“I see you Nala” - (See how this helps you below) 🌅 Morning all 👋, Todays tip helped by Nala, is attention seeking behaviours (ASB). I touched on this last week, however I wanted to focus particularly on this ASB in this post. 🫡 Now, as Nala is pretty much pure white with a curly tail, as you can see, she is quite pretty when she does this stretch 😍. If you look at her eyes she often makes eye contact with you, and if this pretty stretch isn’t quite grabbing your attention, she will often add a yawn or a howl, as seen in the pictures. Obviously this gets my attention every time, as she is very pretty & cute when she does it and hard for me to ignore, add the howl, I’m a sucker for it every time. I will always say whether she is stretching or adding in the howl, “I see you, Nala”. I say this because I want her to know that this behaviour does get my attention, as well as the fact I like to let her know that she does get my attention and I still include her, even if I am busy with my boys. I do this to still involve her, but also because I like this ASB it’s very cute, therefore I don’t mind her doing it. She only really ever does this when I’m with the kids, as it’s usually then she gets slightly less attention. If this was a more undesirable behaviour, she simply would get nothing in return for those behaviours. As I mentioned in my previous post, she also goes into beg to get my attention, which again I don’t mind as it’s very pretty. It’s very simple really to get more desirable or cute ASB. Undesirable ASB lead to nothing or a calming area for a moment, attention seeking behaviours you don’t mind such as giving you paw, waiting patiently or looking pretty, would equal some type of engagement.
