This is the entire Yorkville School student body of 1892-1893. Their graduating class consisted of only 12 graduating seniors. 5 in 1892 and 7 in 1893. This building was dedicated in winter of 1887 and welcomed students in for classes the first week of 1893. This building is on the National Register of Historic Places, 1 of 3 buildings in Yorkville on the register. It is now home to @pca_falcons! It’s remarkable the comparison to the average size of the graduating class of Yorkville now. My graduating class in 2014 had over 400 students! #yorkville #yorkvillethenandnow

This view of downtown Yorkville makes me feel so nostalgic for a simpler time. Yorkville in its Heyday in 1936 for their centennial celebration! In the Kendall County Record it’s noted that several thousand people showed up for a celebration of the 100 year old village. Carnival rides were brought in, merchant booths, parades and history about the town was all available to who came. We are only 12 years away from the 200 year anniversary of Yorkville, I wonder if history will repeat itself and we will see another spectacular celebration! #yorkville #yorkvillethenandnow #history #centennial
This is one of all time favorite Yorkville photos I chose to do a Then & Now with. It’s from the mid 1940’s during the 4th of July. Clarence Schulter who lived in this home and his wife had constructed a large American flag to drape over the entire front of the house! His granddaughter sent me this photo and several other ones of this grand residence! This home was built in 1879 by Jacob P. Black, brother of Elias Black. They owned most of the land in Yorkville and sold to the city which were divided into lots known as “Black’s 1st & 2nd Addition.” This was later the home of Dr. Robert McClelland, a well known Doctor in town. He later served as Village Trustee & President, county Coroner and head of the Masonic Lodge. Dr. McClelland died in his home and while he was coroner, used this as a meeting space along with his office on Van Emmon Street as well as a space to wake early residents in town. Edward Gutel, the Earl Price Family, P. F. Whalen, the Ed. Shur family and the Marshall families all called this place home over the last 145 years. #yorkville #yorkvillehistory #yorkvillethenandnow

The Edward Shepard house located at 506 Heustis Street, was built in 1928 by Edward A. Shepard. It was later the home of George and Margaret Ohse and children Alyce & George. Edward Shepard’s son was David Shepard who was a well known local historian as well! The Ohse family owned a grocery store in downtown Yorkville now where the parking lot for Crusade Burger Bar is now. that young girl out front is Jo Ann Marshall Pierce who grew up next door! #yorkville #yorkvillethenandnow

John R. Marshall II and Robert “Bob” Marshall grew up in this home on Heustis Street after father Hugh Rice Marshall moved back home from Hamilton, Canada. His father J. R. Marshall who founded the Kendall County Record practically begged his son in personal family letters asking him to come back and take over the family business. After Hugh and wife Pearl came back, his father J. R. Made sure the renovate and add only the best modern amenities in 1908 to his home. Little Bob Marshall was born in this house and you can see them here in front of their newly added fireplace. This house hasn’t changed much in the 100 years since the Marshall family lived here. It was also the home of well known veterinarian, Dr. Frank G. Loomis. This home was built in 1871 by Charles Mather, later being the home to many well known residents such as Milton E. Cornell, Fred G. Young, Arthur Crimmin, Justus Nading and Yorkville Bank President Herman Ebrecht. #yorkville #yorkvillethenandnow

The Hotel Nading opened in the 1890’s, later, Justus Nading leveled the wooden structure to build the 3 story hotel building that stood there for over 100 years. It passed thru several owners over the 1930’s & 1940’s, then becoming the Yorkville Hotel. Frank Pennuto owned a tavern in the main level of the building as well! Friday night 🌸 Little post-work gab sesh with my work peeps, then to the iconic Heliconian Hall, a gem in the heart of Yorkville on Hazelton, built in 1876. 🙌🏼 The Hall is home to the Toronto Heliconian Club, founded in 1909 to give women in the *arts and letters* an opportunity to meet socially and intellectually. The nonprofit club is the oldest of its kind in Canada.
