Back from a sea swim. And a few words on that. There's a common misconception about those. That we do them because they 'feel good'. They do. AFTER. One thing is for sure : they're never easy and, by and large, not pleasant. Not this time of year. Look at my face.! 😂 Every time I get the guidance to go for a sea dip, I feel a rise in adrenaline in my body, but also a rise in anxiety. It's going to feckin sting, my body knows that! My mind works full speed trying to find excuses to NOT go. To take the easy route. To find an 'easy' way out. And the challenge, every time, is to NOT listen to the mind. To go with the guidance, no matter how hard or painful I imagine it's going to be. And this is one of the things that sea swims teach me. That ease in life comes from doing hard things. Things that I know to be good for me, but that my mind resists, because they're hard. And small problems in my day, small hurdles, small issues, vanish into nothingness after I've taken the plunge. ⚠️ ⚠️⚠️ ATTENTION (seeking behaviours) ⚠️⚠️⚠️ 🗣️“I see you Nala” - (See how this helps you below) 🌅 Morning all 👋, Todays tip helped by Nala, is attention seeking behaviours (ASB). I touched on this last week, however I wanted to focus particularly on this ASB in this post. 🫡 Now, as Nala is pretty much pure white with a curly tail, as you can see, she is quite pretty when she does this stretch 😍. If you look at her eyes she often makes eye contact with you, and if this pretty stretch isn’t quite grabbing your attention, she will often add a yawn or a howl, as seen in the pictures. Obviously this gets my attention every time, as she is very pretty & cute when she does it and hard for me to ignore, add the howl, I’m a sucker for it every time. I will always say whether she is stretching or adding in the howl, “I see you, Nala”. I say this because I want her to know that this behaviour does get my attention, as well as the fact I like to let her know that she does get my attention and I still include her, even if I am busy with my boys. I do this to still involve her, but also because I like this ASB it’s very cute, therefore I don’t mind her doing it. She only really ever does this when I’m with the kids, as it’s usually then she gets slightly less attention. If this was a more undesirable behaviour, she simply would get nothing in return for those behaviours. As I mentioned in my previous post, she also goes into beg to get my attention, which again I don’t mind as it’s very pretty. It’s very simple really to get more desirable or cute ASB. Undesirable ASB lead to nothing or a calming area for a moment, attention seeking behaviours you don’t mind such as giving you paw, waiting patiently or looking pretty, would equal some type of engagement. “Your dog doesn’t want random interactions, they want friends”. How many of you would love the next random person you pass, to come and cuddle you, rough up your hair, and get all up in your face? Probably not many but theirs always the odd weirdo that would 😂. However, you probably wouldn’t mind the same person stopping and having a quick conversation or pleasantries right? The majority of dogs aren’t that fussed about meeting every dog, playing with every dog, and generally interacting with every dog. Like you, they’re likely quite happy to walk on by as they and you do your own thing, maybe a quick greeting and they’re off. Firstly, it’s important you realise that your dog doesn’t need to greet or interact with every dog. Dogs are selective just like humans, they want to interact with some and not others, just like you do with people. 10% of dogs are social butterflies and are over-sociable (we all know those), 10% of dogs are under-socialised therefore potentially unsociable, so 80% of dogs are dog selective to who they want to interact or play with. 🐶 Here Nala is bumping into some dogs we regularly bump into down our road (her friends). Collies can be super selective, but it’s lovely for her to have regular enough contact with dogs she likes, as she would be less likely to enjoy random interactions with dogs, especially if they’re very intrusive and disrespectful of her space or signals. It’s important, you understand and respect where your dog sits on the dog selective scale as shown above. It’s important for you to find suitable and similar dogs to yours, that they will enjoy interactions with, while potentially avoiding random interactions, if your dog is not bothered for them.
