Stanford Block Building, 119-129 Smith street. While many will be familiar with the name Stanford in connection with the prestigious American university, it may not be as well known that the Stanford whose name graces the Smith Street building is of the same family (the university was established by his brother, Leland). This impressive commercial building with two three-storey shops in the central central section flanked by two two-storey shops at each end, was built by American businessman, spiritualist and philanthropist, Thomas Welton Stanford in 1883. Stanford initially made his fortune importing Singer sewing machines to Australia. He then began an ambitious program to build shops in inner city Melbourne. As part of this program he also constructed another nearby at the corner of Smith and Johnston Streets, Collingwood. These shops were being constructed at a time when Smith Street was becoming a prominent shopping destination notable for its emporia which included the substantial Foy and Gibson enterprise (see post of 5 January 2024), Henry Ackerman and Co., Patersons and G.J Coles. The Stanford Block building at 119-129 Smith Street - with its second storey punctuated by eight pairs of pedimented windows and the overall scheme finished with an acroterion topped name plate- was designed by William Pitt, a Collingwood councillor who also designed the Princess Theatre and the ornate Olderfleet and Rialto buildings in Collins Street.
