A great wine prompts memories and references to tastes of places and life experiences - great music the same. Only difference is the sense of taste and sense of hearing. . Like this wine by the masterful guidance of Walter and Remi of @place_of_changing_winds who saw the worst vintage conditions in many years at their vineyards in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria, Australia in 2020. . Aptly named the Latin term “Annus Horribillus” or horrible year, the wine in 2024 has evolved to become an amazing wine they believed in. Also how great their vision and persistence was to see this through to the bottle! “Should I stay or should I go” and go they did! . The frosts and winds combined with the pandemic and financial uncertainty we all faced to me showed how we can all take a life lesson in sticking with a plan and throwing all behind your passion - wether career of personal. . Life as we age, has no time for indecision and worry and as these guys have shown they have created one of the worlds great Pinot Noir wines (imo). . Aromas and Tastes of Macedon herbs, mixed with violets, lavender and a huge basket of freshly picked dark cherries and raspberries is what I call a taste for the remaining senses. . May everyone’s “Annus Horribilis” fast become everyone’s “Annus Mirabilis”! . Luna Chardonnay 2022 If you love Chardonnay as much as we do, you'll love this too. Tiny Luna from Rosevears in Tasmania's Tamar Valley ticks all the right boutique boxes: single vineyard, hand picked, minimal intervention. What does this mean? In two words. Bloody good! We reckon all great Chardonnays from all round the globe try to emulate great Burgundies, the home world of how wonderful Chardonnay can be. If you know Burgundies, it's impossible not to think of Chablis or even a lovely Meursault when drinking this 2022 Luna. Yeah, it's that good. There's racy acidity, lush stone fruit, incredible complexity and impressive depth here... as all reputable Chardonnays should possess. Luna jumps to another level. Do not under any circumstances drink it too chilled. At least 10C, which means not straight out of the fridge. Use a wide bottomed glass. Let it breathe. Drink it with what? Well, a rich prawn risotto leaps to mind. We had it with pan fried John Dory in a fish master stock sauce with samphire and pickled turnips. Replace the John Dory with turbot and you're on a winning streak. Go all French and try it with poached chicken and green grapes. Or quail. A pasta primavera would taste terrific with this superlative wine. So would Parmesan, breadcrumbs and cream stuffed mushrooms. Woodlands "Ruby Jane" Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River 2019 Sourced entirely from the original vines planted over 50 years ago, this wine is gorgeous. Matured in new French oak for 2 years it comprises 95% cabernet sauvignon and the remaining 5% merlot and malbec. This wine is still a young medium purple with a medium + intensity. The backdrop of vanilla and cedar from the new oak is subtle and perfectly compliments the oppulent blackcurrant and cassis aromas and flavours. This is all fruit and is a silky smooth medium bodied wine. Typically Margaret River. With medium tannins and a lingering finish this is such a pleasure to drink. Just so tasty. Well balanced with full bodied creamy texture, high acid and a generous length on the palate. And it certainly didn't disappoint 🥰, reminding me that I really should be drinking more Grenache! ✨ This wine is the perfect crowd-pleaser 👍, especially as we head into the cooler months ❄️. Deep Woods 2022 Reserve Chardonnay Margaret River Wow this hits you as soon as you pour the glass. I tried this at the Deep Woods cellar door. The grapes are harvested from their Wilyabrup plot. Grapes are picked at night to maintain acidity and delay natural fermentation. 9 months maturation in new and old oak. This wine has a medium+ intensity with aromas of flint, char and that classic steely grapefruit. On the palette its smooth, and creamy with a hint of lemon. Yet there is no malolactic fermentation. Yesterday evening I attended an online seminar run by @wset_school_london and hosted by the wonderful @emma.symington MW. The talk was all about two western Australian regions Margaret River, and Great Southern. So what did we learn? 🤓 1️⃣ Margaret River is predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon. It has a maritime climate with the main challenges being wind and birds. (It's an extremely biodiverse area we were told). 2️⃣ There are two grape vine clones that give Margaret River wines a distinctive character. 'Houghton' for Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine a fine tannin from small low yielding berries. Dominated by lush cassis and blackcurrant flavours with some herbal notes. For Chardonnay the 'GinGin' clone is used which gives it a very crispy 'al dente' feel. (As described by Emma in the talk). 3️⃣ Great Southern is, as the name suggests, a huge area which is sparsely populated with vineyards. It has a variety of micro climates but tends towards being one of the cooler and wetter regions of Australia, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay being two popular varieties. 4️⃣ Mount Barker is the most densely concentrated vineyard area in great Southern and grows some great Riesling, as well as Bordeaux Blends. There are multiple sub regions in Great Southern due to its size and each has its own character, from coastal to mountain, to river. I hope this little post gives you a small taste of what we got to learn yesterday, and sets you on a path to appreciating some more Western Australian wine.
