On Monday I was caught in an inbounds avalanche at my local ski resort, while skiing an untouched and uncut chute in "Owl Tree". I was carried well over 100 feet from the top of east DeMoisy ridge, nearly to the bottom of Middle Bowl Cirque. I traveled just under 50 miles per hour in the slide! Somehow I am unscathed, when I could have very easily sustained serious injuries or died. The crown of the break was over 15 inches... I narrowly avoided 3 separate nests of trees and a few rock outcrops. Somehow I just slipped right through the nests of trees... I feel so lucky to be uninjured and alive. I definitely saw my life flash before my eyes as I helplessly took a ride towards those trees and rocks. I have triggered many inbounds avalanches at this resort, but this was an unexpected slide and I got caught in it. It was insane... I called ski patrol to report it, and they helped me find my missing ski in the debris. Winter isn't over yet, and there's another huge storm coming in this weekend. Avy conditions are going to be bad. Stay safe out there folks! Picture 1: a smaller crown, towards the bottom of the chute. I did not feel like booting up to the top of the ridge to get pics of the highest crown. 2nd slide video: You can see the over 15 inch crown up towards the top of the chute. 3rd slide: You can see a crack where the avalanche wanted to continue webbing out, but luckily it held. 4th slide: Here you can see how far I was carried! Elk in Snowbasin Sketching directly in ink, I drew this noble creature cast into bronze while sitting in Earl's Lodge, Snowbasin Ski Resort. Located near Ogden Utah, it is the sister resort to Sun Valley in Ketchum, Idaho. After a first layer in ink from a pen, I used a water brush for a wash effect while the ink was still damp, the repeated with a second different ink pen, washed. When dry I added snow with acrylic. I spent two magical days here - the first full of snow with very low visibility & the second a bluebird day and fairly warm! It was great to see the resort in different conditions & experience different parts of the mountain with varying snow conditions. Snowbasin was purchased in 1984 by the Holding family who still own it today! Not many family owned resorts left in our ski world. During the 2002 Olympics, Snowbasin hosted downhill & super g!! There are two gondolas on this hill and a short tram right to the top. Feels to me like these were put in specifically to accommodate the crowds for the Olympics. The hill definitely doesnโt feel busy enough to have all these gondolas, but it was certainly much appreciated!!! This resort is made up of three fairly distinct zones - Strawberry (my fav to lap!), Needles & John Paul. Over my two days here I got to explore most of the hill and loved everything. There is something for everyone here - incredible views, steep and deep terrain, tons of tree skiing, terrain parks and so much more! On my second day I was lucky enough to meet John in the tram to the top of the mountain. He invited me on a few of my best laps over past No Name, as always a spot I never would have gone without a local. Snowbasin is a little further out than some of the others, and consequently has far less crowds! I got so many laps over my two days, and simply could not believe how few people were out there. Friends occasionally ask if I am still snowboarding, as I havenโt posted any pics in several years. YES! I am! This year I took two trips to the Wasatch (SLC/Utah), the first week of February and the first week of March. The Wasatch recorded a near-record snowfall for February, so both trips were spectacular. I took WAY too many pics, so these are a quick summary of some highlights. We visited 4 ski areas for 16 days of snow (8 for each trip). In this set: 1) Sunrise from Snowbird, early โbird beats the Little Cottonwood Canyon traffic, 2) cold/sunny โbird, 3) me (!) carving Mineral Basin, โbird, under the Book Ends, 4) ski pal KH in powder at Baby Thunder, the โbird, 5) break after 14 powder drops with โface shotsโ every time, 6) hiking No Name Peak (yes, thatโs its name) at Snowbasin (I did catch up with the โkidsโ), 7) ski pal KH ready to ski No Name chutes. #snowbirdskiresort #snowbasinresort #wasatch #skiutah
