Streambank Wild Holyhock (Iliamna rivularis) is a large perennial forb belonging to the "mallow" or Malvaceae family. This stunning species has 24-80 inch stems with large showy white to pink flowers growing in a loose terminal cluster (raceme). Iliamna rivularis is found in open forested slopes, meadows, and disturbed areas, in a variety of plant communities between 7,000 – 11,000 feet. The species name "rivularis" refers to its site characteristic of often being found along streamsides. Wild hollyhock is a shade-intolerant plant, which flowers very profusely following disturbances such as wildfire. It quickly is eliminated from post-fire communities, however, once it becomes overtopped by other vegetation. Germination takes place in full sun and seeds can remain dormant viable for more than a century. Wild hollyhock is highly preferred by livestock, as well as elk and mule deer and other wildlife in recently burned habitats. Am I going to stay in Durango is a question that follows me. Others ask it, I ask it. I’ve never been anywhere this long. I pack up and move in a year and I start a new. Always in movement. Always staying good bye. Revisiting old homes this year, I’ve started to feel regret at my escape. I look at friends I wish I could call neighbors again, to form new memories and deeper connections without elaborate plans, to see regularly instead of annual check ups. The climbing gym, coffee shops, blocks of this city that I dream of when I’m not here. Not that I’m not happy I ended up in Durango with people I now cherish and a house that feels like home despite the fact it’s still a rental. But I think the realization I was running finally has settled in: I was terrified and it had less to do with this city and more to do with me. I didn’t *need* to leave. Though I know I still would have eventually, looking for closer access to trails and less traffic. I wanted to be healed and I wasn’t quite there yet. I wanted to be where I feel I finally am in the past year and I felt like I had to keep pushing myself, challenging myself with new towns I never been to, with no support and no friends to rely on, I had to struggle so I could forget what was actually going on. I needed to focus on making a new home so I could forget about why I left mine in Idaho. And I don’t know why the pattern was broken. I was too exhausted to run again. I had friends who wouldn’t let me and I was finally ready to face the things that were following me everywhere I stepped. I can’t go back and change my choices, I don’t think that would have helped. I think I needed to be exhausted to finally give in. I can’t just resume my old lives and get back the time with friends I would’ve experienced if I hadn’t denied their pleas to just stay a little longer. That’s long gone and now I just have to learn from my past. This morning I lay in bed struck by how so many of my recent conversations have been about my parents. How they each passed away. An unexpected hour of rage after Kendell asked me an offhanded question about my childhood. What I wrote about in my journal, working through some unexpected emotion, finding my way to a bit of enlightenment. So many thoughts on my growing-up years & childhood traumas, the way they continue to impact me. Coincidence? The book I’m reading? Bealtaine? Definitely the last. Like Samhain, Bealtaine is a time when the veil between this world & the others is thin. The halfway point between the spring equinox & summer solstice. The time when the West is at the full sweetness of spring. The very start of summer. Blooming. I decided to take the nudges from my parents, coincidental or not, as encouragement from fairyland. Blooming has been the farthest thing from my capabilities this year. There are a lot of things I am struggling with & I’ve grown disconnected from the things that make me feel the most alive. I marked Bealtaine not with fire or fertility rites but with flowers. I bought some for my desk. I wandered around my yard admiring what is blooming (columbine & bleeding heart & 1 white iris). And I left work the second I could so I could get on a trail. I’m still nursing that pesky sprain from my race (my ankle feels like a loose tooth somehow) so I only walked. But on one of my favorite sections of foothill trails, one where I hoped some flowers would be blooming. Mules ears & milk vetch & mountain bluebells. “At Samhain, you reap what is first sowed at Bealtaine,” I read during my morning googling. What do I want to harvest in November? Yes, I’d like to get stronger & more capable at running, so I set a few goals for my physical self today. But more important are my goals connected to my relationship with words. More consistent reading, more time just sitting with an empty screen, letting words come. On April 2, 2024, I Skied The "Y Couloir" Alternate in Little Cottonwood Canyon, UT. Avalanche and icefall conditions pushed me into this seldom skied part of the zone and the snow was deep! Chest deep at times... It took me 1.5 hours to climb the last 700-vertical-feet. The reward was deep delectable snow and a great primer for my impending trip to Alaska. I thought it might be fun to share the video game view of the run in my old carousel style. We wanted to share some key real estate market metrics for the first quarter of the year. The median sale price for homes in the Summit and Wasatch counties saw a 3% decrease from Q4 2023, landing at $1.848 M. The year-over-year median price point indicates a 9% rise compared to 2023. In terms of sales volume, there were 169 homes sold in Q1 - down 27% from the prior quarter. The combination of pricing and transaction activity points to a market that is returning to pre-COVID levels of normal. When @vetmedmck79 and I got to the top of our backcountry skiing "objective" today after two hours of climbing, clouds rolled in and it became zero visibility. While skiing down we couldn't see 5 feet ahead. When we got back to the car, the clouds parted and beautiful sunshine was lighting up the mountain we just skied.
