When the Adult Education School referred 19-year-old Ray to SPIRIIT, a regulated Sail Training Vessel, he got started on accumulating real 'sea time', a key factor in maritime careers. Ray sailed around Bermuda, along the US east coast and to Turks & Caicos. This 24/7 'sea time' gave Ray the setting for building a career - a career to global standards - becoming "Leading Seaman" for the Department of Marine & Ports Services. Yesterday at St. Peter's Church in St. George's, a memorial service was held to honour former slave and ship's pilot, James “Jemmy” Darrell. Jemmy Darrell was remembered for his exceptional maritime skills and his bravery in challenging racist legislation. He encouraged black Bermudian men to become ship's pilots and also advocated for slaves and free Blacks. Jemmy Darrell is an iconic figure in our maritime history and an inspiration to us. What a great honour to have Captain Chris Blake, OBE onboard Spirit of Bermuda last Friday, welcoming trainee crew from @@sgsbermuda back to shore. Captain Blake was Spirit's first Captain, joining us in 2005 to supervise construction and setting up our initial youth development programmes, training Bermudians to take over. He is currently Captain of Pelican of London which was visiting Bermuda last week. Jamila joined Bermuda Sloop Foundation in September 2018 as our onboard education officer and is a much-loved member of the team. Another action-filled day for trainee crew from Whitney Institute Middle School. They spent the day with Waterstart on Burt Island learning about Bermuda's natural environment and the importance of conservation and sustainability. They helped with woodland conservation efforts, removing invasive species and went kayaking to view seagrass meadows surrounding Burt Island, which are a food source for marine species and habitat for juvenile fish. 'A Bermudian Schooner Yacht Offshore' This painting by John Lynn in 1834 inspired the build of Spirit of Bermuda. After looking for a workable design to base Spirit on, finding this painting was a real discovery! An ocean going, Bermuda rigged vessel and the right size for our missions. The Bermuda Rig (triangular sails) were developed in Bermuda by Bermudians. Built of Bermuda cedar (lighter than oak), these vessels could sail close to the wind, were highly manoeuverable, and the fastest way to get from one port to the next in the late 1700s and early 1800s. So fast were these schooners, the Royal Navy applied the rig to their 'Sloop of War' for use against ships engaged in the slave trade. Like these vessels, our Spirit of Bermuda is both agile and fast, as well as quite majestic. The original of this painting is located at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. Despite the weather yesterday, trainee crew from Whitney Institute Middle School enjoyed productive and educational day onboard Spirit with lots of activities below deck. They learned how the engine room systems operate, studied advanced sail theory, read navigation charts, and undertook a fun STEAM exercise - the tin foil boat challenge, as well as team building exercises. With the tin foil boat challenge, students investigate how the size and shape of a vessel affects how much weight they can carry without sinking. Undertaking experiments like this help young people develop critical thinking skills and allow them to put into practice the theories they have been studying.
