White-Margin Nudibranch, Glossodoris rufomarginata. These slugs can be seen by the hundreds if not thousands on the north shore of Oahu during the summer months. They can be found in clusters like this, often times with their white eggs somewhere nearby. They can grow up to 25 mm in length, and are one of the most common Nudibranchs anywhere from 3 to 100 feet.

Fuschia flatworm, Pseudoceros ferrugineus. Considered one of our “common” species of flatworms here in hawaii, it can be found during mostly the day time however I have seen them on night dives. At scuba depth whether that’s 20 feet or 50 feet the “fuschia” color may look more like a blue color due to the physics of light traveling through water, all you need is a strobe or a flashlight to pull out the true color of this flatworm!

Ring of fire... Egg-eating Nudibranch, Favorinus japonicus. One of the more elusive slugs here in Hawaii, this slug eats the eggs of other slugs and slowly starts turning the color of their food. When first born they are white and lack any color, over time after eating their favorite snack (Spanish dancer eggs) they start getting this nice red color. On your next dive in Hawaii make sure to take a look at all the Nudibranch eggs you find!

5/10/2024, 5:44:43 PM

Being back in Hawaii I get to go see some of my favorite slugs out there. These little guys are often referred to as “Shaun the Sheep” because of their resemblance to…. sheep! They are very tiny and are often found near the food source which are the leaf that it is pictured on. Does anyone else have a favorite slug or nudibranch?

5/9/2024, 9:52:49 PM

Rubber Ducky, Siphopteron quadrispinosum next to a dime! This was a new species for me, they can be found anywhere from 20-90 ft in open sandy areas. They tend to appear in the early summer, and by the time fall time comes around they disappear completely. They are veryyyy small but once you see them you start seeing them all over the place in the sand. This photo shows you a little perspective on how small some of these creatures are. (No animals were touched or moved in any way)

5/9/2024, 12:00:53 AM

Tiger Flatworm, Maritigrella crozierae. So I’m sure everyone loves nudibranchs but I think flatworms deserve a little recognition too. This is a tiger flatworm and I’m sure you can figure out why. They max out in size at approximately 2.5 inches, and they can be found on the Hawaiian islands as well as throughout the tropical pacific.

5/7/2024, 9:26:23 PM

Violet-gilled Nudibranch, Hypselodoris violabranchia. These nudi’s are on the “smaller” size of slugs, they grow to approximately 20mm or 3/4 of an inch. These slugs are commonly mistaken as the Locust’s or Pease’s Nudibranch, but what makes these slugs stand out is their magenta and white rhinophores and gills.

5/6/2024, 11:42:49 PM

Hawaiian Day Octopus 🐙, first dive back in the warm waters of Hawaii (74 degrees) and I gotta say I am so grateful to live here. We saw a nice variety of creatures, but I couldn’t resist spending some time with this octopus. I love watching them go through their colors, and changing their texture! Octopus are some of the smartest creatures out there, next time you find one just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

::A Million Little Eyes:: __________________________________________ Here is a close up look at fall-run Chinook salmon being raised for release at Nimbus Fish Hatchery in Sacramento, Ca. And a PSMFC Biologist @blonde_chris02 watching over them. Fall-run Chinook Salmon are listed as a Threatened species in California under the federal Endangered Species Act . Currently The Department of Fish and Wildlife in California raise and release hundreds of million Chinook salmon in California to help increase the population and return rates of these Salmon. Tagging efforts are provided by Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commision (with the help of me, among many other). In this first photo, thousands of Fingerling Fall-run Chinook Salmon wait to be tagged for release into the American River. In the second photo, Fisheries Biologist Chris Townsend crowds the Salmon into a fish pump to be transferred into a state of the art Fish Tagging Trailer. * * * #cdfw #chinooksalmon #endangeredspecies #conservation #salmon #nimbusfishhatchery #psmfc #underwaterphotography #yourshotphotographer #natgeoyourshot #fishing #splitshot #spotmydive #fyp #explore #sacramento #california #fisheries #biologist

Common Bigeye, Heteropriacanthus cruentatus. One thing I love about this fish is the crazy patterns that it shows. This fish can rapidly change colors from red to a blotchy red and silver. The maximum length of the fish is roughly 18 inches, and they are found all over the Indo-Pacific. This species can be found in caves and crevices, especially during the day. During the night they can sometimes be found swimming among the reef.

Before traveling to Indonesia, I was hoping to see and take photos of 2-meter gigantic sea turtles, tiny endemic critters while muck diving, and even experiencing a blackwater dive. However, what I wasn’t prepared for was 1… a volcanic eruption and 2… coming across whales 🌋🐳🤩. @Siladen, we encountered these Melon-headed Whales. As they passed by, two of them looked directly at me, and I froze. They swayed so calmly, and I found myself hypnotized by their graceful movements. Suddenly, I remembered that my camera was in my hands and managed to capture this shot just before they disappeared into the vast blue ocean. 💙🐠 #melonheadedwhales #whalesnation #biodiversity #MyOcean #spotmydive #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #underwater_is_life #underthesea_perfection #diving_photography #bg_underwater #instadive #uwpics #uwart #submerged_stories #underwaterlife #underwater_world_ #underwaterphoto #oceanographic_mag #paditv #nauticamhousings #wideanglephotography #nikonunderwater

Globe Crab, Randallia ornata. As you can probably guess this crab resembles a globe, due to its “round” shape. Did you know that crabs must shed their exoskeleton in order to grow? After the crab wiggles out of its old exoskeleton it is vulnerable for the next week or so until its soft shell hardens into its normal protective armor.

5/3/2024, 7:55:11 PM

Gold Lace Nudibranch, Halgerda terramtuentis. One of hawaiis more common Nudibranch, you can easily spot many of these slugs on a single dive in Hawaii. It can be found anywhere from 5 - 140 ft, it typically feeds on a light orange sponge and its eggs are a bright yellow color! I have no idea where this nudi got its patterns and colors, but it sure is interesting.

Flatfish!!! There are a few different species of flatfish here in Hawaii. Flatfish can camouflage themselves with the sea floor, and sometimes they are so good you can barely even see them. I’m sure you’ve heard, but flatfish start their lives out swimming upright like a normal fish and typically within a few weeks their eye starts shifting to one side and their body begins to change to adapt to the sea floor.

5/1/2024, 6:13:01 PM

California Sidegill, Berthella californica. This slug can reach up to 8.5 cm but are typically smaller. Even though this slug may look like a nudibranch it is not, it has a thin white internal shell that extends at least half of its body length. Little is known about this slug but it is known that some species of this family can repel predators with strong acid secretions from glands in the dorsum.

4/30/2024, 8:29:58 PM

Humped Ancula, Ancula gibbosa. This is a fairly distinctive slug, it almost always has three yellow lines that run down its body, though sometimes the lines are broken. This slug was a new find for me, however it was quite small, no larger than 10mm in length. Did you know that Nudibranchs typically live up to a year, some even live for a few weeks. The oldest recorded Nudibranch was 4 years old!

4/29/2024, 7:29:48 PM

The sarcastic fringehead, Neoclinus blanchardi. The last fish I really wanted to check off my list here in San Diego. These fish typically max out at 10 inches in length, and they are known for being fearless and extremely aggressive, and will charge anything that approaches their hole. The females choose their mate based on how desirable the homes are of the males, this causes the males to become very competitive. Their jaws are very interesting and can open up up to four times its original size! They use their huge mouths in their “competitions” with other males.

4/28/2024, 7:37:15 PM

Did you know that some moray eels are unable to fully close their mouths, this is due to them having some giant teeth. This is one of our resident morays here in Hawaii at one of our dive sites. Most morays are known to be nocturnal, which means during the day they can be seen hiding in crevices and caves, at night time they can be seen swimming in the open water hunting for their next meal.

4/27/2024, 7:49:00 PM

Diamondback tritonia, Tritonia festiva. This slug is also another predator of marine invertebrates, meaning its main sources of food come mostly from soft corals (which are alive). I don’t know if it’s just me but this is one of the more interesting looking slugs out there.

4/26/2024, 5:50:58 PM

Navanax inermis, this slug can grow up to 22cm in length, this specific slug was roughly 8cm. These guys are known to feast on other slugs, specifically nudibranchs and bubble shells. They lack visual perception, they find their prey by using its chemoreceptors to follow the slime trails of other slugs. This photo is a closeup up of its face and you can see its “mouth” which has some “bristle” like organs on either side which are the chemoreceptors that do all the sensing. #nudipics

4/25/2024, 9:48:15 PM

Pacific Rock Crab, Romaleon antennarium. This crab gets its scientific name from the two long antennas that stick out from its face. This species can be distinguished from its close relative the Red Rock Crab due to the red rock crab having shorter antenna as well as green eyes and not red eyes as seen here. The males can grow up to 7 inches across the back, and the females about 5.8 inches. This crab had a piece of grass that he seemed to not want to let go of.

4/24/2024, 7:08:53 PM

Price’s Aeolid, Apata pricei. This was my first time seeing this nudi, and the maximum length is roughly 25mm. This one was in the process of laying eggs, and was swaying all over the place. Luckily with a little help I was able to get a few decent shots. I always love finding new slugs especially when they’re so interesting looking, shoutout to @hollywood_divers for helping me out with a new strobe after my old one decided to quit on me. #nudipics

Pipefish!!! I never knew that Southern California had pipefish, and this past weekend I got to see my first one. I actually ended up seeing three total! Pipefish are a close relative to seahorses, they like to hide in the grasses and sway back and forth blending in super well. Depending on the species pipefish can be anywhere from 1 inch to 26 inches in length, and they can even change their colors to blend into their environment.

4/23/2024, 12:38:01 AM

Polycera tricolor and Hermissenda crassicornis together on a recent dive off of Point Loma. I always love finding nudi’s and it’s even better when you get to see different species together in one photo. Certain species of slugs will often times eat other slugs, however I think these two were just passing by eachother. @marissacharters #nudipics

4/21/2024, 8:50:56 PM

Golden Dwarf Moray, Gymnothorax melatremus. Usually a solitary eel, it can be found anywhere shallower than 200 ft. They range from a pale to deep yellow with brown spots on the sides. This species won’t typically grow longer than 10 inches in length. They can be found all over the Indo-Pacific, however they are reportedly more common among the Hawaiian islands.

4/20/2024, 9:49:58 PM

Opalescant Nudibranch at Point Loma, this is now one of my favorite slugs to find here in San Diego, even though they are literally all over. Every dive depending on location you can find dozens of these slugs. No matter how many times I see them I still get excited to take photos of them. #nudipics

4/19/2024, 11:57:48 PM

Hawaiian Day Octopus, Octopus cyanea. One of my favorite and probably one of the smartest creatures we find on our dives, octopus grow and learn all on their own, without their parents guiding them. They quickly learn how to hide and camouflage themselves to avoid all kinds of predators. Did you know that about two thirds of their neurons in their whole body are in their arms and not their heads? The more you know 🤷‍♂️

4/18/2024, 9:02:25 PM

Desirable Nudibranch, Coryphellina exoptata. This is one of our smaller slugs in the Hawaiian islands, the maximum size in length it’s 17 mm, however the slugs we find are much smaller. This is a closeup shot of the rhinophores of this species. Did you know that Nudibranch rhinophores are used for detecting food, finding other slugs, avoiding predators, and they can even sense changes in water pressure and vibrations.

Showy Xanthid Crab, Pseudoliomera speciosais. The reason I love this crab is it looks as if it has a bunch of tiny beads on its body. I think this pattern looks so cool and is so interesting. These crabs grow to about 1 inch in length and can be found in cauliflower coral. These small xanthid crabs play a huge role in the ecosystem, they assist in regulating the population of small invertebrates.

4/16/2024, 8:51:51 PM

Big Fin Reef Squid, Sepioteuthis lessoniana. This squid is common in waters of the western pacific, all the way from the Indian Ocean to the Hawaii waters. This particular squid decided to join us on a night dive on Maui, it spend about 45 minutes with us. We think that it was using our lights to find food, we didn’t mind having our little squid friend keeping us safe.

4/15/2024, 7:02:56 PM

Yellow-Spotted Cadlina, Cadlina flavomaculata. This tiny slug was roughly 12mm in length, so pretttttty tiny. Did you know that Nudibranchs can be found in all waters around the world. From freezing temperatures of the arctic all the way to the warm tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. The one thing I love about diving here in Southern California is all of the different species of nudibranchs I get to find!

Photo dump from scuba diving on Gili Islands! 🤿🌊 Keep reading for the dangerous creatures we saw in the last three pictures! See what scuba diving in Gili Islands is like in my “The Underwater World of the Gili Islands” video in my tap bio link on profile @deanna_troy_travels White Tip Reef Shark: Don’t be scared, this is not a great white! These little guys are curious creatures and will often inspect scuba divers, just don’t get too close. This small shark rarely grows larger than five feet and is one of the most common sharks found on Indo-Pacific coral reefs. So if you’re scuba diving here, there’s a high probability you’ll see one! Trigger fish: These strange fish pack a punch! They can actually knock out scuba divers if they feel like it by charging at full force into people’s heads! Guess I what I did? Followed it around and pointed at it. LOL. Keep your distance when observing these strange buck-toothed fish! Lionfish: Another fish to keep your distance from is the Lionfish. Although beautiful and ornate, this scaley critter is the porcupine of the sea, except their spikes are venomous! A lionfish sting isn’t deadly but it can cause extreme pain and nausea, convulsions, dizziness, fever and numbness. • • • #scuba #scubagram #scubadive #scubadivers #scubadiving #scubadivinglife #scubalife #scubaworld #scubapro #scubaphoto #scubadivingmag #scubashooters #padidiver #paditravel #spotmydive #giligasm #exploreindonesia #wonderfulindonesia #triggerfish #whitetipreefshark #lionfish #scubasafety #diving #travelers #trawangandive #indonesia #giliislands #gilimeno #underthesea #goprophotos

Yellow Margin Moray, Gymnothorax flavimarginatus. A face only a mother could love. This moray had quite the smile, I’m not sure how this happened but it could’ve been multiple different things, either way it adds some character to this eel. Often times morays will have a small row of teeth in the middle of their mouth, as we can see here which is for grasping and holding onto their prey.

FROGFISH FRIDAY!!! Out of all the frogfish babies I have found I’d have to say this is one of my favorites. Did you know that frogfish do not have swim bladders like most other fish? Instead they use their short, modified pectoral fins to “walk” or even “hop” around the reef. An adult Commersons frogfish can grow up to 15 inches in length, this particular fish is about 3 inches in length and growing fast!

4/12/2024, 8:00:25 PM

Tiger flatworm, Maritigrella crozierae. This fairly common worm can be found on most reefs in Hawaii, this is a pretty small species and can grow up to 40mm in length. Flatworms do not have gills and they actually breathe using diffusion through their skin. All of these bright colors help let potential predators know they might not be the tastiest treat, they get these colors from absorbing the chemical compounds from an orange tunicate.

4/11/2024, 8:02:38 PM

White-Tip Reef Shark, Triaenodon obesus, I know your first thought may be that this shark is eating or about to eat this tiny fish. In reality this shark is just having a spa day, this Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse is an expert in cleaning up its customers. The wrasse removes parasites, mucus, and dead skin cells from body of the fish, they will even enter the mouths and gill chambers of the larger fish and eels. On your next dive in Hawaii waters keep your eyes peeled for these colorful purple and yellow fish to see if there is a fish spa nearby.

Yellow Edged Cadlina, Cadlina luteomarginata. There are a few other nudis that are very similar to this slug, the things to look for are the yellow -edged lining, the yellow-tipped tubercles, and the yellow tips on the rhinophores which are very distinctive. This nudi ranges from northern Alaska to Baja California, Mexico. Did you know that most Nudibranchs get their color from the food they eat, the coral and anemones they eat give them a similar color and allows them to blend in much better.

4/9/2024, 11:08:29 PM

Two-Spot Octopus, Octopus bimaculoides. This is one of the more common octo’s here in SoCal, my last night dive I spotted maybe 7 of them! They can at any type of the year but it is more common for them to do it during the summer months when the waters warm up. After the male does his side of the job he will often die, although he can mate with multiple females before dying. The eggs take 1 to 2 months to hatch and shortly after hatching the female will die. The total lifespan is similar to other octo’s and can range from 1-2 years.

4/8/2024, 10:00:41 PM

Dendrodoris denisoni/krusensternii this is considered a “moderately rare” species here in Hawaii, it was first recorded in Hawaii by Terry Gosliner in 1972. This is one of the more interesting looking nudi’s I’ve seen, I absolutely love the colors and the texture throughout the body. Believe it or not it blends in super good, so I’m not sure if they’re just not around or I just keep swimming right over them, keep an eye out for their bright blue spots and maybe you’ll get lucky!

4/7/2024, 9:53:00 PM

Shortsnout Scorpionfish, Scorpaenopsis brevifrons. This is one of my favorite fish to find, there are so many different species of “scorpionfish” and they’re all so different from eachother. This fish can grow up to 7 inches and they can be rather small, so on your next dive in Hawaii keep your eyes open for a peach colored eye starting at you through the rubble.

4/6/2024, 10:09:40 PM

Harlequin Shrimp, Hymenocera picta. Just because I miss the warm waters of Hawaii here is a photo of the elusive Harlequin Shrimp. I had been searching for this small creature in Hawaii for years and it finally happened one day earlier this year. They are usually 1 to 2 inches and the females are slightly larger than the males. They are typically more active during the night, and if you do find one look for another one nearby due to them often being in pairs.

4/5/2024, 9:02:56 PM

Diamondback Tritonia, Tritonia festiva. This was a new slug for me today and we saw tons of them. Most sightings of these slugs have been on the west coast of North America, and they have been all the way up north in Alaska. They feed on sea pens, sea pansies, and sea whips as we can see in this photo. This slug was found at the end of my dive and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to catch this nudi going for a climb, so of course I had to stop and snap some shots. #nudipics

4/5/2024, 12:59:19 AM

Paradoris sp. #1, this is a lesser seen nudibranch here in Oahu, they are a cream color and they may have brown spots speckled throughout their body and their rhinophores. There is very little known about it this slug but they are nocturnal, the two times I have seen them have both been during night dives. Keep your eyes peeled on your next night dive on Oahu and you may come across this slug.

Sergeant major eggs! These eggs are smaller than a grain of rice, and they are very precious to the parents. The fish tend to them diligently, defending them from start to finish. They start out a reddish color and towards the middle of their time they start developing their bodies and the eyes, which we can see in these photos. They take about 155-160 hours following fertilization to hatch. The male sergeant major will chase away all other fish attempting to eat the eggs until the eggs hatch, after they hatch, the larvae reach 2.4 mm in length about 36 hours after hatching.

4/2/2024, 9:12:15 PM

Spanish Shawl, Flabellina iodinea. One of the most common slugs here in Southern California These bright nudis can grow up to 2.75 inches in length. This nudi feeds primarily on a specific species of hydroid (Eudendrium ramosum), which has a pigment called astaxanthin. This is the pigment that gives the Spanish shawl nudibranch its bright color. They lay “ribbons” eggs and they are a pinkish-orange color, and are typically found on the hydroids that they eat. Keep your eyes peeled on your next dive for these bright slugs!

Strawberry Anemone, Corynactis californica. One of the most common creatures in Southern California, you can find these all over shipwrecks and rocky reefs. This “anemone” is actually not an anemone but a corallimorph, and is in fact the only species of corallimorph on the west coast of North America. The tentacles have a bulbous tip and are rather short in comparison to true anemones, they range in color from pink, orange, red, yellow, and purple.

*・.。* Juvenile paper nautilus *・.。* Juvenile paper nautilus is swimming while pulling jellyfish and salpa. This is probably used as a hiding place. They always make good use of what is familiar. The second photo shows Paper Nautilus is pulling a salpa that Phronima is processing as a barrel. This fancy critter is called the Harlequin Shrimp! They stand out with their flower-like shape and patterns, but what’s truly remarkable is how they dine. Harlequin Shrimp have a special diet—they love munching on starfish, which they immobilize and eat piece by piece. I spotted one of these shrimps holding a red starfish arm, ready to feast with its sharp claws @Lembeh. So this leaves us with one question: are they elegant murderers or gourmet chefs of the underwater world??? 🍽️🦐🔪👨🏻‍🍳 💙🐠 #harlequinshrimp #starfish #biodiversity #MyOcean #spotmydive #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #underwater_is_life #underthesea2734 #underthesea_perfection #diving_photography #bg_underwater #instadive #uwpics #uwart #underwaterlife #underwater_world_ #underwaterphoto #oceanographic_mag #padi #paditv #nauticamhousings #uwmacrophotography #uwmacro #nikonunderwater

California Sea hare buddied up with on Octopus, I’m not sure what these two were doing or what they had planned but they looked like they were up to something... Did you know that the California Sea Hare is the biggest gastropod in the world! They can grow up to 16 inches in length and up to 5 pounds in weight! This species can also “ink” and when they feel threatened they expel a purple ink through the folds on the top of their body. This sea hare didn’t ink so I guess it didn’t feel threatened from this octopus. 🤷‍♂️ #ngphotographerchallenge

*・.。* North Pacific lightfish *・.。* A rare encounter. One of the deep-sea fish that appear in winter is the North Pacific Lightfish. Standard length 5cm. The ventral side is lined with large luminous organs. It is a mid-water swimmer at depths of about 50-400 m. It is known to undergo diel vertical migration. Its Japanese name is Kyuri-eso, because of its cucumber aroma. *Kyuri=Cucumber.
