Comino, nazwa tej trzeciej co do wielkości z wysp archipelagu Wysp Maltańskich pochodzi od kminku. Zdążyliśmy jeszcze przed letnim wypaleniem ziemii poczuć zapachy ziół, porastających wyspę. Otaczające wyspy wody mienią się pięknymi odcieniami błękitu i zieleni. Większość ludzi przypływa na wyspę w celu kąpieli słonecznych i morskich. My wybraliśmy się na trakking wokół wyspy. Nie oparliśmy się jednak napojom przygotowanym w ananasie i kokosie. 📍Valletta, Malta 🗓 June 2022 The Maltese capital Valletta was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980 due to its historic sites. Named after Jean Parisot de la Valette, the respected Grand Master of the Order of St. John, who kept the city safe during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. After the great siege, he commissioned the construction of the new city of Valletta in 1566, laying the first stone with his own hands. Sadly, he did not live to see Valletta completed- but I'm sure he'd be happy with it if he was here today! Valletta is worthy of several posts alone. I start here with an appreciation of its architecture. 📍Popeye Village, Mellieħa, Malta 🗓 June 2022 Popeye Village aka Sweet Haven. Set of the 1980 Popeye film starring Robin Williams that is still standing and is now a visitor attraction. For the admission price, you get free popcorn to watch a short film of how the film and set were made and a free postcard. There is lots of singing/dancing going on from dressed up actors, and you can swim in the water too. Jellyfish were swarming when I was there though. Really quirky and took me back to my childhood. 📍Mellieħa WII Air Raid Shelter, Malta 🗓 June 2022 Mellieħa air-raid shelters were dug by hand to shelter the town's population from WWII bombs. It's one of the largest underground shelters in Malta, with a depth of 12m and a length of around 500m, and gives a haunting sense of what it was like to shelter down here. Each person had only an allotted space of 0.6 sq metres! My hotel was a 5min walk from here so I welcomed the chance to step back in time to what life was like in wartime Malta. Display cabinets of artefacts greet you near the entrance to give information and the lovely man on the door is so welcoming, knowledgeable and happy to answer questions/give further information too. The network of underground tunnels seemed endless! I went in alone not too long before closing so it was a little eerie being by myself especially when you come across mannequins in some of the rooms of people that used the shelter! It was a welcome break from the hot sun outside and a good place to take some time to reflect on a few things too. All for the bargain price of €2.40!! 📍Mellieħa, Malta 🗓 June 2022 "A place for old people"/"just full of churches"/"there is nothing to see or do" All of the above are opinions I had heard about Malta prior to and after going. I have to passionately disagree! It's a fabulous place and as always, a trip is what you make of it 🤷🏽♀️. Hopefully, in posts to come, you will see why I loved it so much 🇲🇹🥰 I stayed in the beautiful Mellieħa Heights area of the island. A 5 minute walk from my hotel was the beautiful Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which dominates the landscape and can be seen for miles around. Adjoining this is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa which started out as a cave and next to that (my favourite area), the tranquil Pope John Paul II Square that offered welcome solace and shade from the fierce Malta sun. From Mellieħa Heights, you can see right down to Mellieħa (Għadira) Bay. This was a steady walk downhill or a few bus stops. I highly recommend purchasing a Tallinja Explore card. This cost me around €21 (I believe it is now €25) and I got unlimited travel on the bus for 7 days. It can be used on Malta and Gozo and also gets you a €3 discount into the national aquarium.
