Celery and Lettuce are at the lowest end of carbs, no surprise. You may be shocked that vegetables have any carbs at all but they are a GOOD carb, so there's that… Others include; Romaine Lettuce, Kale, Swiss Chard, Celery, Radishes, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Green Beans, Brussel Sprouts, Green Onions and so on. The other thing vegetables are good for is FIBER! Broccoli and Zucchini, for example, are on the list that can help with constipation. While Celery and Spinach can help with Diarrhea. Sweet potatoes are also good for the last. That may be a crappy conversation, but if you struggle with either… you’ll want all the help you can get!! Chia seeds are so flexible, and are a great source of Omega 3’s so… had to throw those in there. Other nuts that can be found that are 8g of carbs or under are; Macadamia, Peanut, Hazelnuts, Almonds, Sunflower seeds, Pistachios and Pine Nuts. Oh… and Pili nuts… what the heck are those?? *based on a ¼ cup serving size. Which is a lot easier to visualize the right amount on the fly than using grams or ounces. Pumpkin seeds alone are amazing. They are rich in nutrients, known to improve immunity, Help fight Inflammation, and support healthy blood sugar levels. Benefits heart and liver, can help prevent kidney stone formation, and has a long list of anti- properties…. anit-microbial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, anti-parasitic and so on. Does the saying- ‘Fill your own cup first’ annoy the heck out of you?? It can be hard to figure out what ACTUALLY fills your cup when you're so busy running around DOING that there's no time for just BEING! The only “BEING” you may feel is…. Being disconnected from your feelings…. Which certainly doesn't help a person figure out what fills your own cup. Mindfulness can be a great tool to stay grounded in the present so you can experience the moment AS IT IS happening. Not weighed down by the past or the future… To notice what parts of the moment fill your cup. Intentionally taking time for YOU. Keeping track and making a list, of those moments that revive you. The trick then is to MAKE time for things that DO. Like time to PLAY… what is that even?? Haha I go in spurts of being good at scheduling play time. Not my greatest skill. Ok ok. Some may argue that avocados and tomatoes are not fruit. Regardless, they are low carb. Plus, Avocado is also a good healthy fat. While there are many fruits to choose from, finding the lowest in carbs keeps it easier to fit fun and tasty into your day. Right…. Ok… Maybe limes aren't so tasty and traditionally rhubarb is soaked in mass sugar to make it edible for some… while others can eat it like it's a piece of celery. Go figure. Berries all seem to be a good bet when you're not sure and standing in front of a buffet of fruits. Portion control is always a good idea even when they are low carb. Find ways to make the most out of your favorites. Avocados can be added to lettuce sandwiches, made into salad dressing or dips and so much more. Lemons can be added to water for natural electrolytes because they are a good source of potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Berries are great in yogurts (dairy or otherwise), blended with chia seeds for jams or dressings, or a handful popped in your mouth all by themselves. Yum Oh. And. If you eat rhubarb raw by itself, tell me HOW you do it!!! Yikes!! Low carb is limiting your daily allowance of Carbohydrates down to around 20-57 grams of carbs a day. Many aim for an average of 30 carbs a day total. This means cutting down on foods like bread, pasta, potatoes and other starchy foods. Rice, sugar, sweets, milk and so on. Looking at a list like this can sound like there's nothing else left to eat. YIKES! It’s so much easier to see a picture or a list that shows what you CAN eat. Basically you want to focus on foods that are high in protein, healthy fats, and lower in carbs. Like meats, fish, eggs, leafy greens, nuts, full fat dairy (if you can- if not, do yourself a favor and skip it) and some fruits. The trick is to find food that is LOWEST in carbs (NO CARB SOLUTIONS) that will fill you up and not max your days quota like; meat, seafood, eggs, cheese, heavy cream, butter, specific vegetables etc. AND which foods MAX you out the fastest like; sugary foods, pops, candy, cakes and ice cream. There are great things you can find to SWAP these out with, like a Sparkling water for pop. Think of insulin as a key that unlocks the doors to your cells, allowing glucose (sugar) to enter and provide energy. Insulin resistance is like the lock getting rusty, so the key doesn't work as well. This means your body has trouble getting insulin effectively, leading to high levels of sugar in the blood, which can cause health issues if not managed such as the issues in the above graphic. Emotions are the brains reaction to the world around you. Emotional experiences and physical sensations bring about feelings. Being able to identify and regulate your emotions and feelings gives you more control of your reactions, so you can choose action over reaction. Emotions help us to identify when we need to change something like; setting boundaries or shifting our thoughts and attitudes. Do you self sabotage? Self sabotage is anything that creates problem in daily life and gets in the way of long term goals. It’s how you talk to yourself. At the root of self sabotage is what you’re thinking, negative emotions, and low self esteem. Habits like self medicating, procrastination, comforting eating and all those squirrels that get in the way of what you really want to accomplish… are self sabotage. The first step to overcoming self sabotage is becoming aware of and monitoring your emotions, self talk, behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs about yourself. Here’s a hard one for many to swallow… self sabotage can come in the form of… not asking for HELP! Isolating, lack of communication, holding grudges are forms of working against yourself. 5 ways to beat self sabotage: ⭐️Self awareness: ❓What are you saying to yourself? ❓What sets you off? ❓Where do you end and other begin? ❓Where do you need to set better boundaries? ❓What doing you really want? ❓What are your values? (They change over time and it’s important to reassess them every so often.) ⭐️Self Acceptance. Which includes failures which are merely part of a learning process, not a definition of your abilities or character. ⭐️Practicing mindfulness. Staying in the moment. Leaving the past in the past… and the future, in the future. There’s so much freedom to be found in this alone. ⭐️Self compassion. Believe or not, when your compassion for self grows… so does your compassion for others. A great place to start is… ⭐️Reframing and counteracting your self talk. Write them down and what you will replace it with. Reassess values, boundaries and habits and actions. Ask yourself: “Does this support the life I’m trying to create?” When your actions are in alignment there’s a lot less stress… which leads to better gut health and better self care. If you are stressed and your gut struggles with what you’re putting in your mouth…. It’s quite amazing what being mindful and staying present can do to relieve stress and help with digestion. Mindful eating means putting down the phone, staying present while you eat. (leave the past behind & future where it is… not here yet) Use all of your senses while you eat. Sight, smells, sounds… notice the texture of your foods. Chew thoroughly and allow the saliva to start digesting the food before it hits your gut. Keep your dinner table conversations positive and the moods light.😃♥️ You’re designed so amazingly that all these actions prepare your gut for what’s coming. Digestion begins with SIGHT!! Isn’t that wild?? Lol And stress. So much of stress is thinking about what HAS happened… or what MIGHT happen!! So staying present, in this very moment helps offload oodles of potential stressors. Do you have brain fog and struggle to keep up with what you need to do to support your body? I struggled with the Celiac Brain Fog for a long while before I found out Celiac was the problem. I wanted to support my body the best I could but struggled to remember allll the things at the time. So I came up with a plan to just focus on one area a day. (Which is why you see in many posts the topic in the bottom right corner) By assigning a daily focus I knew that each area was touched on at least once during the week. This also upped the chances that I would do the others as well… as I struggled to go about my day. In case it’s any comfort… It gets easier over time as you learn what to watch for. Over time you get quicker at vetting the ingredients and space to avoid cross contact. Potlucks… well. I just mainly eat what I brought and some of the simpler foods that are easy to tell that they are safe. Casseroles are a big no!! I don’t eat out (restaurants) very often and that is a thing all to itself with some of the strange practices they have that I would have never even considered prior to having Celiac. Things like them using the deep fryer for everything, or the same pot of boiling water for everything… making even naturally gluten free foods soooo NOT gluten free anymore!! The biggest thing is to remember is it is/was a learning curve for YOU… so don’t expect people to get it in a sentence. For a few years now I have done a more in-depth fast at the beginning of the year as a reset. This stage isn’t fun when you’re still reeling from the side affects of being glutened, like BRAIN FOG!! Ugh I had to reread a label multiple times to figure it out in the beginning. Trying to focus and comprehend with heavy brain fog SUCKS! Plus the learning curve of figuring out the things to watch out for, like the sneaky ingredients of “natural flavors” and “barley malt”. The simplest way I found was to shift over is to go with Whole Foods that are obviously NOT gluten containing foods and only getting things labeled “gluten free”. Old favorites were a challenge until I found the right 1:1 ratio gluten free flour that I could easily make my favorites with. (And you can’t tell the difference!) Remembering to let it sit for 30 minutes before baking was a challenge at first though. So I started the habit of making it and cleaning up the mess before throwing it in the oven. It’s so helpful to join a group and find other people with Celiac to share the journey with! You don’t have to do it alone. ♥️ (I have a group you can find in my bio) Thankful we have wayyy more options and help available now than when I started this journey! But it’s so worth the effort to get on track to helping your body to heal. Just remember, it’s a learning curve that doesn’t last forever. Instead of a goal... Have you ever narrowed your focus for the year to one word or phrase? It’s one of my favorite exercises. To add depth to the word/phrase write down: - A definition and similar words. (adds depth and meaning) - Why you chose the word/phrase. (Motivates) - What you hope it will add to your life living with it for a year. (Goal) - Find a quote with the word/phrase in it and frame it and post it where it’s visible. (Vision) - Reflect weekly on how it applies to your life. (Measurable) For added reflection and growth, at 6 and 12 months, write down the ways it has improved your life and review your why, definition and goal of choosing that word/phrase. Do you struggle with staying on track with your goals? When putting yourself in a difficult situation with something you struggle with, I call that Creating Opportunity. HALF the battle of any struggle is NOT putting yourself in a place that makes you vulnerable and creates opportunities to fail. Self sabotage is real and the aftermath sucks. With foods I like to do what I call a “VICTORY STASH”. Meaning setting out and planning quick & healthy bites for quick “Go-Tos” when in a hurry. Being intentional ahead of time makes making better choices much simpler. When I don’t do this I’m more apt to head to the self sabotage options.🤦🏻‍♀️ If it needs to be in the fridge I place them at eye level or where they are easiest to see and find. Non fridge items I place on the counter, ready to help me make better choices. Being intentional and having a plan can make a BIG difference in your outcomes! Walking can give the brain a break and increase creativity for finding solutions. (Which means increased productivity.) Are you stuck in a state of indecision? Some definitions say indecision is a lack of firmness or purpose and direction. Choosing to NOT make a decision, is still a decision. There’s often fear or a lack of information lurking behind a state of indecision. The fear behind the indecision can be a fear of making the wrong decision (being wrong) and/or it’s consequences. Yet most decisions can be overcome by making a new decision. Fear can be lessened by acknowledging that the consequences aren’t always the end of the world. One way to make decision making easier a little easier is to narrow it down to three options. Less options makes it easier to decide. Life is full of decision making. Who knew? You mysteriously seem to have been glutened… Yet know you had all the same gluten free foods… ah, but how about your partner?? While a kiss itself does not inherently contain gluten, the potential for cross-contamination exists, and understanding how it can happen is important. Even small amounts of gluten can trigger adverse reactions, leading to various health issues for people with celiac disease who have an autoimmune response to gluten. The concept of a kiss containing gluten revolves around scenarios where one partner has consumed gluten-containing products and may still have traces of gluten on their lips or mouth. For instance, if a person eats foods like bread, cakes, or pastries, particles of gluten might remain in their saliva. In this context, if the person who has consumed gluten then kisses their partner, there is a potential risk of transferring those gluten traces to the other person. While the amount of gluten transferred may be minuscule, it could still be problematic for someone with celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity. Both partners can work together to find solutions, such as waiting a certain amount of time after eating gluten-containing foods before kissing. Work together to reduce the likelihood of cross-contamination. Do what you can to foster a supportive environment and maintain a shared sense of intimacy while respecting individual health needs.
