We were talking about test stands at work yesterday, which reminded me of NASA’s ill-fated Test Stand A-3 at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi 🚀 . It was originally built to test the J-2X upper stage engine for the for the Constellation Program. But even though that was cancelled in 2010, Congress perplexingly mandated the test stand still be completed, costing the US taxpayer $349M 💰📉 . As soon as it was finished in 2013, it was immediately mothballed. Clearly a case of pork barrel spending that the senator from Mississippi pushed for. Did 3 races last week, which were all #space related. Sunday 19th was the #battleship12k in #mobile , Alabama, honoring the #spaceforce . Saturday 25th was the Stennis Half Marathon at the #stennisspacecenter in Mississippi. And in between on Thursday was the #tammanyturkeytrot 5 miler in #covington , Louisiana, celebrating the space in my belly ready for #thanksgiving dinner. The target for Battleship was to finish under an hour and I just made it, so very happy with that, even if the race was harder than I would have liked. For Turkey Trot I ran on Team Drew with Ryan for @ainsleys_angels . We had a blast, and great to see Drew get out and run the last section to the finish line. Stennis Half Marathon was tougher than I hoped, although I had no real plan as it was really preparation for another Half Marathon in two weeks. I struggled at times but was regularly spurred on by so many friends that had volunteered to man the water stations out on the course. It felt like the best support crew ever and without a doubt helped me to get a respectable time and an Age Group 3rd place award.

Brown Water Boat Guys: Special Boat Team 22… Although all Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (SWCC) can trace their roots back to the WW2 maritime units of the Office of Strategic Services, Special Boat Team 22 has its specific origins in the Vietnam War and the Navy’s Coastal River Division-22. Today, SBT-22 exists as the only Naval Special Warfare unit specializing in near shore as well as riverine operations (brown water). Their craft of choice is the Special Operations Craft - Riverine (SOC-R), which for all intents and purposes is the modern day equivalent of the Vietnam-era Patrol Boat, River (PBR). So if Captain Willard and his Seiko 6105-8110 needed to hitch a ride up the Mekong today, the SOC-R would do the trick. At 33 feet long, a stationary draft of 2 feet, and a pair of 440HP Yanmar 6LY2M-STE marine diesels driving water-pump jet drives, the SOC-R is capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots in waterways too shallow for conventional propeller-driven craft. Bolstering it’s speed and maneuverability, is a compliment of firepower that can include GAU-17 miniguns, Mk19 40mm grenade launchers, M2HB .50 caliber machine guns, and tandem M240B GPMGs. The primary mission of SBT-22 is to conduct clandestine combat operations in support of Navy SEALs who require insertion or exfil by way of rivers. A single SOC-R with a four-man SWCC crew can transport an eight-man SEAL squad or two, four-man SEAL fire teams. As you’ll notice in the photos, SBT-22 relies on a few usual watch suspects for being “on time, on target…”. Casio G-Shocks, Suuntos and Garmins abound on these operators’ wrists. Read this excerpt: Stennis Day in the Bay will spotlight the contributions of NASA’s Stennis Space Center to its neighboring communities. The event organizers’ intent is to introduce young people to exciting aerospace and oceanography careers close to home and expose adults to all the benefits that the NASA’s Stennis complex offers Hancock County and Mississippi. The inaugural Stennis Day in the Bay will be held on Veterans Day, November 11, from noon to 5 pm on the grounds of the historic Hancock County courthouse on Main Street. The Events Committee of Bay St. Louis, together with Partners for Stennis & Michoud, have put together a day filled with interactive exhibits and activities for all, including opportunities for one-on-one conversations with Stennis employees, all while honoring our Veterans. SUPER BLUE MOON OVER NEW ORLEANS A Super Blue Moon rises above the Mississippi River and the Crescent City Connection Bridge in NEW ORLEANS, on 30 August 2023. The full moon is “super” because it’s slightly closer to Earth and “blue” because it’s the second full moon in a month. About 25% of all full moons are supermoons, but only 3% of full moons are blue moons. The next SUPER BLUE MOONS will occur in a pair in January and March 2037. New Orleans is home to NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility, where stages for NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and structures for Orion spacecraft are produced for the Artemis missions. 🇨🇵 Nouvelle mise à feu statique pour Relativity Space. Relativity Space viens de publier de nouvelles images concernant leur moteur Aeon R. En effet, la jeune entreprise a procédé avant-hier à une mise à feu statique de son tout nouveau moteur Aeon R. Cette mise à feu a été faite au Stennis Space Centre de la NASA sur le complexe de test E. Aeon R est un moteur fabriqué grâce au procédé de fabrication additive. Ce moteur fonctionne au mélange oxygène et méthane liquide et a une poussée de presque 130 tonnes au niveau de la mer. Ce moteur est développé pour propulsé le futur lanceur à haute capacité de l'entreprise, la Terran R. Terran R est pensé pour être partiellement réutilisable. Relativity Space à recours à l'impression 3D pour ce lanceur qui devrait avoir une capacité théorique d'emport de charge utile de 23,5 tonnes en orbite basse (en version réutilisable). Relativity Space has just released new images of its Aeon R engine. 2 days ago, the young company carried out a static firing of its new Aeon R engine. The firing took place at NASA's Stennis Space Centre on Test Complex E. Aeon R is an engine that uses the additive manufacturing process. It runs on a mixture of oxygen and liquid methane, and has a thrust of almost 130 tonnes at sea level. The motor is being developed to power the company's future high-capacity launcher, the Terran R. Terran R is designed to be partially reusable. Relativity Space is using 3D printing for this launcher, which should have a theoretical payload capacity of 23.5 tonnes in low earth orbit (in reusable version). NASA completed its penultimate hot fire June 15 in a key test series to certify production of new RS-25 engines for NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket that will help power future Artemis missions to the Moon and continue the agency’s efforts to explore the secrets of the universe for the benefit of all. More than 500 NASA Stennis, NASA Shared Services Center, and NASA contractor employees and family members viewed the hot fire on the Fred Haise Test Stand at NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, which marked the 11th in the 12-test series. The final test of the series is scheduled June 22 and will set the stage for SLS engines lead contractor Aerojet Rocketdyne to manufacture new RS-25 engines for future deep space missions, beginning with Artemis V.
