I made ‘Joong’ all by myself for the first time. I never wanted to learn from my mom as a kid/ adult. Now that her and my grandma are gone I felt nostalgic about one of my favourite childhood treats. This year's Dragon Boat Festival is a four-day holiday in Taiwan. This holiday involves racing Dragon Boats, drinking realgar wine and eating sticky rice dumplings known as zongzi. Children and families often look forward to celebrating it. Zongzi is an iconic staple eaten during this annual celebration, which requires a time-consuming process to make but results in a delicious, sweet or savoury, sticky wholesome dish. Its flavours vary greatly by region. 南粽 Southern Taiwanese Style - The Southern style zongzi is boiled. They are made by stuffing raw, pre-soaked glutinous rice with cooked fillings (often more savoury, like peanuts, shiitake mushrooms, and pork) into bamboo leaves. They are tightly wrapped and then boiled until they are soft to the touch and the aromatic fragrance of bamboo leaves comes out. 北粽 Northern Taiwanese Style - Unlike the Southern style, the Northern style zongzi is made by not just cooking the fillings, but also frying the raw glutinous rice with seasonings until partially cooked before wrapping. 素粽 Vegetarian Style - As Taiwan’s culture has heavy influences from Buddhist beliefs, zongzi has a special vegetarian version. While the northern style simply removes the meat and leaves the other fillings, the southern vegetarian zongzi would leave only peanuts or beans. Tết Đoan Ngọ vui vẻ 🐉 🐲 今日係農歷的5月5號就係端午節 今日必食嘅食物係糉 或 粽子 (國語: zòngzì) 或 糉 (廣東話: zung2) 或 肉粽 (閩南語/台語: Bak Zang) 今日有兩種不同鹹肉粽: 娘惹肉粽 (Nyonya Bak Chang) 海南鹹肉粽 (海南話 Giam Yuk Dang) Hôm nay là Tết Đoan Ngọ. Khi ngay đặc biệt người Việt phải ương rượu cơm nếp và nấu bánh ú. Người Hoa cũng phải nấu bánh ú tên là 粽子 “zòngzì” hoặc 肉粽 “bá trạng” bằng tiếng Phúc Kiến và Triều Châu hoặc 糉 “zung2” bằng tiếng Quảng Động. Ở đây có hai loại: Nyonya Bak Chang của Malaysia 🇲🇾 và Singapore 🇸🇬 Bánh ú bá trạng kiểu Hải Nam (鹹肉粽 “Giam Yuk Dang” bằng tiếng Hải Nam).
