In various media, sharks, along with other animals including snakes, spiders, bats, scorpions, alligators, crocodiles, wolves, squids, sperm whales, and many others, have been misunderstood as monsters, with their only desire is to harm and/or kill humans. 2. She’s very pretty and one of the larger Tigers there while I visited. I estimated her weight to be around 1,200 pounds and I would guess she is 12-14 feet long. 🦈 Estimates suggest that around 100 million sharks are killed by humans every year, although less conservative commentators state it could be as much as 273 million. ⠀ ⠀ Taking the lower figure for now, it works out that 11,416 sharks are killed across the globe every single hour. That’s over 3 every single second. ⠀ ⠀ The vast majority of sharks are killed for their fins and flesh, specifically to make shark fin soup. The dish is a delicacy in Asia and especially popular in China. In some cases the fins are cut off whilst the shark is still alive, the body is then discarded back into the ocean where it bleeds to death or sinks to the sea bed. Couple this with other threats such as plastic entanglement, loss of habitat, gillnetting, long line fishing and climate change - the outlook is turning bleak very quickly. ⠀ ⠀ It’s worth noting that ‘Finning’ is illegal in many parts of the world although it goes unabated in most of the Pacific and Indian Ocean.
