It's so great meeting people in real life who you've chatted with on LinkedIn and Instagram! Finally met the lovely @helenanimate and @smileatthemoon_ at @norwichuniarts last week, where I was asked to be a guest speaker as part of the Spirit of Creativity C.A.T. Conference. Slightly delayed start due to a pesky fire alarm, but that resulted in a great photo of Helen showing Major Clanger some of the sights of Norwich 😆, I couldn't leave him inside incase there was a real fire 😅 Afterwards we had portfolio reviews and the students showed me some great puppets in progress and asked for any advice. I feel like living in the house has brought back so much of G’s imaginative play! I’ve always wanted to make puppets so this was a very special experience ❤️ Helping make a life sized puppet & set, creating a script and also performing in the show at the @polkatheatre We based our story on an old lady crane “Nana Suzanna” teaching babies about migration and stepping out of your comfort zone Everything has been made sustainably using scrap fabrics and second hand materials. The Mime’s eyes and lids are another favorite part of mine! He has sixteen sets of lids that include a blink sequence and three squints. I made a 3D jig with the eye sockets and eyelid keys from the core and printed it. Then, I made an open-faced mold and it was cast in plastic. With the jig and delrin balls, I used PETG to vacuform the eyelids. Afterwards, I drew the shape I needed and cut them out. Lastly, they were sanded, primed, and painted! I am really happy with how well the eyelid keys work. They allow all of the lids to work with every expression and eye shape change! For the Mime’s eyeballs, they are delrin balls cast in plastic. I drilled a hole big enough to fit a needle pin and painted on a black pupil. While managing the puppet dept on Shape Island at BixPix, I would make sure and reserve a fun design (or 2 or 3) to fabricate on each episode. One of my favorites @jonklassen designs to create was the SNAKE from the episode 6: Triangle goes solo (written by Jon & @macbarnett & @ryanpequin ) . Snake was made using a build up fabrication method and without the need to do a sculpt or mold and cast This helped cut down on fabrication time but was very difficult if changes were needed since there was only 1. Luckily those changes could be worked out on the mock-up (which I did for ever character on the show) beforehand, that way we had as many questions answered as possible before going into fabrication. It was important to me to try and use materials that kept a tactile feeling to the characters that felt more inviting and pleasant for the eye.The snake was also a reference to @sarapidgette ‘s snake Udon (last pic) who was the puppet departments mascot. Had such a fun and inspiring evening at @bdf_gather last Thursday. First time actually on a stage 😱 and with a microphone 😱😱 but it was amazing. All you people in Brum were so lovely and welcoming. Bonding with the other guest speakers beforehand was great, then listening to them talk about their work... I loved hearing @florafricker talking about designing champagne labels etc for Bridgerton which then get covered by the actors hands 🫤 and having to replicate 30 of the same film prop letters on a typewriter to achieve the proper authentic look (which did then get a close up 🥳) @_doaly talking about creating the Lord of the rings posters, and the ring actually shining and catching the light at different angles, which looked awesome, and the Dr Strange poster which was mind boggling! @nbstudio_london showing their design process, and the many logos and branding they'd created. I particularly loved the kid's philharmonic orchestra branding, which increased interest by 30% 🎉 And hearing @alan_r_dye and @beckyjcampbell talk about how being a designer is wonderful, and we need to remember to keep it fun, because we are very lucky getting to do what we love. ❤️ Absolutely, could not agree more 👌 Thank you @luketonge and @danielalcorn for organising a brilliant evening and of course lovely grub from @bundobust 😋 Looking forward to plenty more where that came from 😉 Fabulous photos from @thombartley
I was asked to give a talk to the @ut_dallas, organised through @aardmananimations. It was a tough job keeping my talk down to only 30 minutes. 😅 After my talk we had 50 minutes of looking at the students projects and giving feedback/advice on how to go about making their puppets costumes. A great question came up about whether you could use dolls clothes. Dolls clothes are usually made from synthetic fabrics, which means you can't manipulate them as easily as you can natural fabrics, and they often have a certain amount of 'bounce' which doesn't move naturally when on a puppet. It makes it harder to glue and iron the fabric too, which is an absolutely necessary part of creating a nicely fitted and refined look! How you treat the hems and seam lines is so important to reduce the scale of the costume, and make it look like a 'real' costume, not a puppet one!
