Just in case you are new to my page (considering it's a new profile that is not hard!) I thought I should do a little introduction. I've been had an art side hustle for about 16 years, selling paintings, teaching watercolour and learning, learning and always learning. This year my side hustle became my full time gig, how exciting, daunting and the full gamut of emotions the journey has been! Since being young I have had a love of fabric, pattern, stationery, homewares and I realise now I buy very little plain colour - my wardrobe is full of pattern, my home is full of pattern. White plates - blah! Give me colour and pattern any day and on everything possible. In early 2020 I came across this thing called Surface Pattern Design and came to understand that I can use my art to create fabric, wallpaper, notebooks, and really any product that you might find pattern on. It's certainly been a learning curve to master the skills needed to create repeating patterns and placement designs, but how exciting and bright the future is. These little watercolour motifs were of a weed by the side of the road in my area that resembles a sweet pea so I labelled it sweet pea. I don’t know if you can see the subtle linen texture in the design. I’m walking around Tasmania at the moment and photographing flowers madly for future pattern designs. I’m not using the ‘b’ word because remember there are no rules in the #octoberflorafest2022 challenge. Prompt 2 banksia - with only a nod to art nouveau - in my research I found that the seemingly abstract patterning in the back of some of Alphonse Mucha’s artworks is a foliage pattern of the gaps or negative spaces in the tree canopies. What makes it tricky though is to create a repeating design with it - so I’m not finished with this pattern yet - I need to work out how to make the foliage background repeat seemlessly, I want to add some highlights on my banksias and adjust the colours of some of my leaves. Getting better at removing that “white halo” - I can now use dark backgrounds! Tiny flannel flowers bloom all through the bushlands around me. Funnily they are a hard flower to paint with not much colour and small in size. Today I present to you another one of my patterns from my new collection 🤗 definitely looking to apply it for interior design. Check out the wallpaper mockup (next image) and let me know what you think!! . I’m so excited about this patterns as it really speaks about me. For so many years I had bedroom walls on those greens!! And I would have loved to have some details on it and never really found much. . The leaves that compose the patterns reflect my love for outdoors and need for nature. Although I live surrounded by it I think having as much of nature’s sense inside the home is great. . The motifs were painted in watercolor and vectorized. There are currently 3 greens in this design . I also see it could apply in my other objects but the wall paper to bring special touches in big spaces is great to my eyes. . I've been working to organize my files and create a swatch library. This serves a few purposes- 1) to easily see the patterns I've created in one place 2) to create an organized file structure to adhere to moving forward 3) simplify & consolidate files that have multiple super random patterns within them 4) all pattern files are in one location not haphazardly saved in different places. Hoping this sets me up for future success as I continue to build my portfolio and work towards licensing.⠀ ⠀ Sometimes I get inspired while working to create the original swatch and go on a little design tangent creating a new surface pattern with the same elements. That's how this pattern came about.
