One of the perks of being a resident artist at Sandstone Gallery in Laguna Beach is that the artists run the gallery. One of our responsibilities is to work in the gallery 3 days a month. Somedays, especially weekends, we might get as many as 25 patrons, other days it’s possible to only have one or two people come in. Recently, my friends, Joyce Legate and Nancy Gunther, told me how much they enjoy painting when they’re sitting in a gallery (Joyce in Sandstone, Nancy next door in Studio 7). They inspired me. I started this little painting when I was in the gallery this past Wednesday. It was unusually quiet, so I had about 5 hours of uninterrupted time painting, then I brought this home and played with it for a few more hours (in between applying layers of varnish on a large painting). I finished it this evening. I’m calling it “A Happy Little Something”. It’s acrylic on a 5 x 5 inch panel, set in a custom made 7.5 x 7.5 x 1.5 inch wood frame. This little painting painting will make its way back to Sandstone Gallery next week, joining a few other new little pieces (and some much larger ones) in my Featured Artist show, “Collections”, running May 1 - June 3 (opening night is May 2 from 6 PM - 9PM). I’m prepping this painting for varnish and I just love the details on these horse balloons. I wanted to share some close ups with you because I didn’t share too much about the process. A little behind this piece and why I didn’t add strings. Sometimes you don’t need to hold your horses. You’re completely ready to move forward, it’s just your fear holding you back. The fear of the unknown…failure…and so many reasons to keep you in place. Digging your toes in the sand is great, but nothing beats getting dirt on your hands. I’m throwing it way back to 2015 with today’s painting. I was living a very different life, working full time as the Director of Development for a nonprofit in my hometown of New Albany, Indiana. I loved my coworkers and the people we served. I loved my house and my yard and especially my garden where I grew the most delicious black cherry tomatoes. But I also had a longing to return to my more figurative roots, as an artist and painter and traveler. It’s hard to believe that I left that life nearly eight years ago now. I miss many things and many people from that old life, no matter how many gifts the current one brings me. If we’ve been out of touch, know you’re still in my heart, and I wish I could bring you a big bowl of tomatoes. 🍅 Also, if you told me eight years ago that this would be my life today, I would never have believed you. New project. I’ve been making some music lately, so it followed my flow that I’d want to try to make what I make the music with. The woods from my recent art piece “Sugar and Spice” inspired this design, with the body blank being made of Silver Maple, Pepper Wood and Bio-Resin. Plein air from the LA River last night, looking South from Sixth street bridge. Gouache, 6x8”. I’m really bummed I never got to see the original Sixth st bridge in person. The new one is undoubtedly elegant and visually striking, I honestly can’t say I hate it. It’s almost got a mid-century modern / 60’s futurist look to it that does fit LA. I just wish we made more of an effort to preserve our architectural history. Walking around parts* of the new and “improved” Arts district in DTLA (the Western terminus of the bridge) is soul-sucking. There’s nothing aside from maybe the occasional vintage street signs that lets you know you’re in LA. I’m not saying that the Arts district was better as the mess it was before revitalization, I’m just saying that was another opportunity to create something unique and beautiful and we blew it. Pretty soon our cities will be completely indistinguishable from one another and no one seems to mind. 🤷🏻♂️ That said, I’m grateful we still have so much of the original architecture in and around DTLA in-tact, and I hope it stays that way for a while. #losangeles #lariver #californiaartists #socalartist #pleinair #pleinairpainting #gouache #gouachepainting

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 As some of you may know, I love the ocean and and many of the amazing sea creatures that live in the waters, especially dolphins❗🐬 🐋🌊 Here are some pics of a Dolphin and Whale watching tour over the weekend with @captdaveswhalewatching where I got to meet an amazing photographer, @caitlyn_nieblas onboard the Manute'a. Finding the dolphin pod was definitely the highlight of the trip and fulfilled one of my dreams to sail with a pod of dolphins. It was an experience I would love to have over and over again and has reignited the inspiration to paint more ocean life animals and themes! 🎨🐠🐟🐡🐢
