I posted this photo two years ago actually on my birthday in late September. My dahlias were still flowering and Gracie my blind spangled Orpington was having a little walk with me. Last week a kind lady messaged to tell me it had been used on a Facebook page which has a very large following. I wasn’t asked or was I given any credit for the photo. It’s a page about charming cottages and gardens. I felt it was really rude and disrespectful but maybe I’m living in the dark ages. I really don’t mind if you like a photo of mine and wish to share it as long as you mention me as well please as i am proud of what we have achieved here. Our cottage has since been painted and reverted back to it’s original pink and the garden has expanded further. A couple of you yesterday so kindly said I was an expert gardener and I don’t see myself that way at all. I just love gardening. It’s been a dream to design and build our own garden here from a field ( there was no garden ) I always feel that our gardens are our biggest teachers we constantly learn from them what works and what doesn’t. I like to observe the space through the seasons and see where the light and shade fall. My experience really does come from listening and observing the land and the flowers I plant. I plant flowers I love and I also let things self seed and flower where they choose. Unless of course it’s right in the middle of our seating areas then I do remove it pot it up and then plant it later on. I let pretty weeds join in as they bring pollen and another element. I mass plant my borders this does actually suppress weeds through the summer so I don’t have to weed the thuggish ones. For me it’s about working with nature , bringing as much food in for the bees, insects and birds. I have about 30 different plants in my pollinators cottage garden. The majority of the plants are layered by sizes, and this cute Butterfly Blue Scabiosa or #pinkcushion, is one of my front row perennial plants. The first row of perennials of the cottage garden works as a low to medium size accent right behind the annual ground covers. This row grows about 10-12" high. I need a lot of front row perennials to fill up the 25' of the border. My goal is to have an English garden, with no visible mulch (you can see some in my photos), so I need to plant in a block or in mass. This project can be very expensive, so currently I'm working on the propagation of my favorite plants. I’m starting to slowly replace the pots that housed my tulips, these normally are planted up with annuals but have decided to experiment with long lasting perennials and evergreens. This little pot is planted up with French lavender, violas and swathes of ivy. Technically this should, with a little care last me for a year or longer depending on the harshness of our winter. I love French lavender and just adore the fluffy flower heads (bracts) , but it will not grow in my heavy clay soil, hence the pot. (the hidcot fares a little better so long as I prepare the soil). And just in case you’re wondering ……..English lavender is much lighter and sweeter than French lavender because it has less camphor, a chemical with a piney. English Lavender Narrow leaves, compact growth. Small, fragrant flowers in purple hues. Sweet, floral fragrance. More cold-hardy, prefers well-drained soil and full sun. French Lavender Broader leaves, showy bracts on flower spikes. Brighter purple flowers. Slightly medicinal scent. They old adage of a week being a long time in politics can easily be applied to Sweet Pea growing, so despite my show season being just over 2 months away, there is a lot that can happen between now and then. The ongoing challenge, at the moment, are the cool temperatures and certainly there is frost in the forecast. So my plants have been under fleece for the past week or so. I’ve looked at some of the rows and the plants were starting to push the fleece up, so I’ve taken it off to have a look and then put it back on, for the next 2-3 nights at least. But I’m fairly happy with what was waiting for me underneath the fleece. The plants are looking reasonably strong and healthy, and planting them out when they were a bit smaller looks as though it has helped them get established much better. I’ll hopefully be taking the fleece off on Saturday, until the next frost is forecast, but I’ll then be starting the cordon training process in the next week or so, after which is when they’ll start to really grow!
