Don’t litter. It’s not hard is it? And for the idiots that don’t get it, we will literally pick up after them. There are bins EVERYWHERE. Took Bear for a walk today on a path I use to run on, go to my physio, use as a short cut to my hairdressers. I walk and run it hundreds of times. There are bins at either end and 3 dog poo bins on the various paths leading off it. Yet STILL people drop litter. Drink cans, food wrappers, plastic in all forms, full dog poo bags, empty ones, receipts, a car seat! Bike tyres, food, shoes, underwear. You name it, they leave it. And that’s just what we saw today. We took a bag with us to pick up some stuff and log it with @trashfreetrails so imagine our delight when we saw that we had been beaten to it by the council earlier in the day! Sometime in the last decade, Goutweed, an old herbal plant, was added to flower beds in the North Garden. While it does serve as a lovely groundcover, it is choking out the upright, flowering perennials. In our commitment to minimize the use of chemicals, we will attempt to eradicate the goutweed by smothering it. First, staff mow close to the ground. Next, they step cover it with cardboard. I'm sure you'll get a few posts about all the wonderful projects mentioned, but for this week I wanted to draw attention to women rangers. Did you know only 11% of the global wildlife ranger workforce is female? We heard this fact from @hollybudge, founder of charity @howmanyelephants which has established World Female Ranger Week, to celebrate and support female wildlife rangers around the world. Becoming a ranger has empowered many women, turning them into breadwinners. In fact one ranger in Africa may support up to 16 family members. World Female Ranger Weeks highlights the significant gender imbalance in environmental conservation and aims to support gender equity in this field across the globe. Rainwater harvesting has long been a part of Tudor Place’s history. The kitchen, which was built circa 1876, included a cistern below the floor to capture rainwater. While the historic cistern has not been in use for quite some time, two 16,000 gallon cisterns in were installed in the South Lawn in 2019. By capturing rainwater and using it in the landscape, we’re reducing our stormwater runoff and the demand for potable water. By making both visible and invisible adaptations to the landscape, Tudor Place can address modern challenges while preserving historic authenticity. #SustainabilitySunday

This is easily avoidable through sustainable food alternatives. 🦇 Deforestation destroys their homes and food sources. City lights disorientate them, causing deadly power line collisions. 🦇Infants are orphaned as a result of hunting, severe weather conditions and accidents that kill their mothers, upon whom they are dependent for the first several months of their lives. Up to 6,000 tonnes of sunscreen enters areas around coral reefs every year, which may be contributing to the decline of reef health. Two ingredients commonly found in sunscreen, oxybenzone and octinoxate, have been found to cause coral bleaching. While no sunscreen can be deemed entirely safe for our waters, by choosing 'reef safe' sunscreens, i.e. those which do not contain these ingredients, you can avoid the worst chemicals entering our oceans. If you can, also choose a sunscreen which is mineral based and non-nano, meaning the particles are too large to be ingested by coral. In more practical terms it's better to buy a waterproof, rub in lotion rather than a spray, which can land on the ground and wash into the ocean.
