Another @4wdevents navigational event ticked off for the year! Though we weren't able to enter due to some prior commitments clashing with the start time, we did make our way out to camp to catch up with the teams as they finished. This event was slightly different, with no waypoints to plot. Just 50 cattle tags to find in the bush. If you could find all of them correctly, identify the number on the tag & do it in the least amount of kms travelled without penalty. You would be at the top of the leaderboard. This event had some interesting results, though some teams travelled less distance, they missed a tag which saw a top 3 finish result move down the line to a top 5. An event that definitely showed attention to detail was just as important as finding the actual tag. Congratulations to all competitors this weekend! Melbourne Cup weekend, we went over to check out Beachport in South Australia. 🇦🇺 What amazing scenery there is to be found over there on the SA coastline. 🏖 We did a lot of driving over the weekend in Beachport, Robe & Kingston SE. With a great mix of dunes, beach & marked tracks, there is something for everyone. Dora performed well. This was her first outing where she has used low range since the 6ltr & auto conversion was put in. Tuesday recap! Started the day with a 100pt navigation which saw us finding lots of rocks, crossing creekbeds, having some fast sections on well run in tracks trying to find all points in a 5 hour time frame. Took abit to get in the groove but happy with what we achieved. After the nav all teams moved to the next 2 stages where there was a small Motorkhana set up & a Point to Point stage. Running the Motorkhana with 3 laps was a good chance to use the cutting brakes with some high speed with turns that saw some wheel lift from most vehicles. The Point to Point had approx 6 way points that were collected as you went, meaning you not only needed speed but be quick on the buttons. This was a fun stage, especially with the multiple cars on stage chasing through the bush. Back at camp we then needed to resolve the overheating issue we were still having. We pulled the radiator out & found some mud still in it even after an extensive wash after racing at Bendigo. Hopefully after this clean out we can get past the issues of getting hot. Night stages for us were 2 winch walls after dark. The first one had been drivable but we got beached on the rock at the top. A quick winch over and the stage was done. The 2nd winch wall we broke rope on, but a quick fix tying our strap into the line meant it was only a short time until in the finish box. Less than 12hrs until @cliffhangerevent starts for 2023 with the first day of racing where competitors will clock up approx 400kms of driving if they make it to the end. Divided into 3 sections, which are done completed in sequence twice, teams will complete each pass by entering the Yukon Pit Lane. Driver briefing had teams at random called to pick their start time. We have chosen to start later hoping for a clearer path in sections to lessen the fatigue on the car. First car to leave will be at 645am with each team following at 1min intervals. Well, two 2yrs ago, we had a freshly built GU driving to Cobar from Melbourne for @cliffhangerevent because we missed our ride up on the truck due to last minute delays. This year we were a tad more organised, arriving well before the 2023 event starts. We even had time to do some sightseeing around town, checking out the history of the area. Work during the week loaded with tools, going away on weekends with the family, towing the camper or caravan, carting firewood, towing trailers around which means your 4WD suspension may need some assistance dependant on your current load. Load assist air bags sit between the chassis and axle to assist with carrying loads. You can just add more air until you reach the ride height you need, no matter how heavy your load is. When unloaded, just let the air out of the bags, and you are back to having soft suspension with a comfortable ride. If you get heavy springs in your suspension kit, you can't go back to soft when unloaded, and most people find their heavy springs are still not heavy enough anyway. If you see yourself in this predicament, then you really should consider airbags to assist your suspension. @aaa.suspension is a locally designed kit with a number of different solutions to suit popular 4WDs. Looking to do something abit different with your weekend? Check out the @4wdevents navigational events being held throughout the year. We attended the @saber_offroad Navigation Challenge Rushworth on the weekend. Taking us to an area we hadnt explored before, this one had simple to drive tracks, but we definitely had to think as we were plotting the route on Day 1. Keeping an eye out for photos to match, questions to answer made the time in the car a laugh! The organisers put on a great dinner for competitors back at camp followed by the hot jam donuts for dessert....mmmmm donuts! Then it was time to kick back around the campfire & socialise with other teams comparing our day. Sunday morning was a wet start with heavy rain from 3am, tracks were slippery & the 80 series got a good wash through the puddles. Something different was in store with 3 mini courses to choose from, secret clues to find & a bonus checkpoint. We tackled the history lessons in the Whroo & Graytown townships as its right up our alley, also grabbed a few sneaky geocaches at the same time. We ran out of time to attempt the 3rd course with the disused mine sites but thoroughly enjoyed the areas visited. Congratulations to everyone who competed. Patrolapart with their clear win, with Lonely Prado in 2nd & the girls at OffMain taking out 3rd place. There were some close scores in amongst the top 10 Thanks to Ruffy, Gaz & Kerryl for organising a great event again. Cant wait for the next ones later this year. If youve never done one before, dont be shy. Everyone is friendly & helpful to help you learn how to plot courses & navigate around the event. Friday Fun times at The 4WD Shed Challenge at Bendigo! This was this morning. There have been a lot of laps & laughs in the past 9 hours. Most teams have been consistently completing their track times. A few obstacles & the hour of power was great fun. Each team were able to have all their cars on course to get as many laps done within an hour. The first navigational event of the year is done & dusted! The @saber_offroad High Country Challenge was based from Knockwood Reserve. @4wdevents created a fun but challenging course that started at 8am. 33 teams were aplit into two groups & Course A or B notes were handed out. Once plotting was started, teams headed off to begin their daytime course. Special bonus points could be found along the way if you plotted the trickier navigational questions & a secret checkpoint was also available if you found a series of answers in both courses. Back to camp late in the arvo for a mandatory dinner break, teams then began their 2nd course with a late finish to get back to camp on time. The fog was very thick at times, creating issues trying to find cattle tags & points of interest to mark off the notes. We didnt get all of our courses completed, needing to cut back to camp to be in on time but happily finished the event in 16th place. Congrats to the top 3 teams who all finished within 5pts of each other! That is an extremely close finish, for sure. If you've ever wanted to enter & try it out, then we highly recommend it. Most of the events can easily be done in a fairly standard 4WD. There wasnt any winching required or aggressive tyres needed on the base courses. On our way up we crossed the border traveling via Snowy River rd to Jindabyne for our first stop of the night, checked out the views on our way to Cooma the next day whilst adding some more smiley faces to our geocaching map! Once at the property, we received a crash course in what, how, where, and why rock crawlers do their thing. The ability of disengaging fronts & rears, winching diffs up & down, moving the centre of gravity of the vehicles blew our minds. The technical aspect was amazing in getting around the cones on course. Thanks to everyone who answered our questions & explained how the vehicles, navis, courses, scoring worked. Sorry, we had ALOT of questions!! If you've never been be sure to check the next one out, the event is extremely friendly & welcoming to spectators. After the event ended we headed back to the Vic border to get a campsite & a campfire near the river for the night. Definitely on our list to head back to the Snowy/Monaro area to do more exploring on another holiday ❤️ We are now back at the shop & open Mon-Friday for all your 4WD needs.
