‘White Dog’ is one of the most underrated films of the 80’s, a really raw, honest and unflinching look at systemic racism, ultimately being the best anti racism film in my opinion. It’s aged really well given how prevalent the conversation of racism still is today. I saw this for the first time a few years ago after hearing about it for years due to it being deeming by controversial by some due to its subject matter and some being shocked by how little availability it’s had both in general release and over the years. It’s one I’ve recommend over the years because it’s quite a shocking film that makes those who watch it feel a lot, especially it’s haunting ending that has stayed with me since the first time I saw it. The film is based on the novel of the same name, which in turn was based on the experience of author Romain Gary and his wife, legendary actress Jean Seberg. It centers on the struggles of Keys, a black dog trainer who is trying to retrain a stray dog found by Julie, a young actress that is a “white dog”, a dog trained to make vicious attacks upon, and to kill, any black person. Samuel Fuller’s direction is fantastic, as he doesn’t hold back in tackling his message full force and telling it like it is in tense fashion. . . The dog attacks can be very violent and occasionally gory, but they are needed to show why the deprogramming is needed. Fuller co-wrote the script with Curtis Hanson, who would go on to direct the certified banger ‘L.A. Confidential’, and together they did a great job at tackling systemic racism head first, and how racism is taught, you’re not born with it and whether you can change somebody who is taught from birth or if it’s a loss cause. It’s quite fascinating to see racism tackled while using an animal. Ennio Morricone’s score was so effective. Paul Winfield is excellent as Keys, displaying so much pain with his eyes at the hatred he’s witnessing from this dog. The emotional weight of the film relies on him, he’s so engrossing in encompassing all the emotions he feels as he’s trying his best to change this dog. . CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS

Milani moves backwards and tries to run out of the shadows but she cannot get that image out of her head. Why would she, a straight A's student have such a monstrous image? The figure starts to catch up with her with bloodthirsty eyes as she's about to reach her target. Milani's breathing starts to become abnormal and she can't control it. Panic attack. No. Not at this moment. She drops to the ground as she tries to regain her breath but her mirror image has caught up with her, knife still in her hands. She raises the knife and tears start to form in Milani's eyes as she lets out a terrified scream. In that moment she opens her eyes. She's in a white room with no sight of any living being and no sight of any scenery. Just white... And that's where I shall leave you. Nora Roberts did it again. Ik ben groot fan van Nora Roberts, en al haar boeken in verschillende genres. Toen ik van mijn lieve oud-collega's boekenbonnen kreeg bij het afscheid wist ik dan ook direct welk boek ik daar als eerste van zou halen: de nieuwste Nora Roberts. In de verborgen erfenis loopt het bij Sonya allemaal even helemaal in het honderd. Ze treft haar verloofde aan in bed met haar eigen nichtje, de verloofde met wie ze ook samen bij een bedrijf werkt... Wanneer op een avond plotseling een advocaat aanbelt met de mededeling dat ze een landhuis geërfd heeft, aarzelt ze dan ook niet en gaat meteen op pad. Algauw blijkt dat ze niet de enige is die in het huis ronddwaalt... Dit genre waarbij mystiek romantiek ontmoet wordt door Roberts tot in de puntjes beheerst. Het verhaal is redelijk voorspelbaar op het romantische gedeelte, maar het mysterieuze maakt dat je toch op het puntje van je stoel blijft zitten en door wil lezen. Het boek eindigt met een mega cliffhanger, dus ik kan dan ook niet wachten tot het november is en deel twee verschijnt! Enige puntje van aandacht: doordat ik Nora Roberts meestal in het Engels lees, vond ik het minder prettig om hem in deze Nederlandse vertaling te lezen. Ik herken haar schrijfstijl zo goed, dat ik letterlijk de Engelse zinnen door het Nederlands heen las. Ik zou hem dus zeker ook aanraden in het Engels. Η Τζουντ -θνητή- έχει διαλέξει για βασιλιά της Νεραϊδοχώρας τον Κάρνταν - νεράιδος- που όπως ξέρουμε αντιπαθιούνται σφοδρά - ναι μας πείσατε! 😝 Και με κάτι δικά της κόλπα τον έχει «δέσει» ώστε αυτή να κάνει κουμάντο και να είναι η δύναμη πίσω από τον θρόνο. Προφανώς αναρωτιόμουν από το 1ο βιβλίο πόσο παθητικός μπορεί να είναι ο Κάρνταν και να τα δέχεται όλα; Αλλά τελικά δεν χάνει ευκαιρία να κρατάει την υπόσχεσή του να την υπακούει, αλλά ταυτόχρονα να της κάνει τα νεύρα τσατάλια και να την προκαλεί. Η Τζουντ μαθαίνει πως κάποιος θα την προδώσει… έχει πολλά να διαχειριστεί. Όταν τελικά κινδυνεύει, ο Κάρνταν επιτέλους ξυπνάει και ενεργοποιείται… άλλωστε είναι ο βασιλιάς και απειλείται η ζωή της Αρχιυπηρέτριάς του. ✨ Αυτό το βιβλίο είναι ξεκάθαρα πολύ πολύ καλύτερο από το 1ο της σειράς! Είχε φουλ δράση και αγωνία, ωραία plot twists και φυσικά η σχέση μεταξύ των πρωταγωνιστών εξελίχθηκε αρκετά, αν και πιο slow burn πεθαίνεις!
