ON STAGE THIS SPRING // By turns bombastic, refined, sculptural, and triumphant, George Balanchine’s Symphony in Three Movements seldom fails to bring the house down and audiences to their feet. In the vein of houses, Richmond Symphony violinist Timothy Judd wrote of Stravinsky’s namesake score, "Architectural rhythm consists of similar repeating lines and patterns, created by bricks, window frames, and classical orders. Symphony in Three Movements often feels 'constructed,' developing in spatial 'blocks' of time." Given the many graphic, often rigid formations Balanchine envisioned for the work, could the choreographer have had a similar architectural interpretation of the score? Join us in ‘the house that Balanchine built’ to decide for yourself when the quintessential leotard ballet in black, white, and pink returns this spring on the All Stravinsky program, opening May 5. 4 shots of me and the very versatile Allegra Kent in my 3rd ballet for NYCB which premiered 55 (!) years ago this Spring. It was Bernstein’s PRELUDE, FUGUE, and RIFFS, and it debuted on the same night as Robbins’s debut of DANCES AT A GATHERING. Allegra and I danced together in that (the “Giggle Dance”), but Robbins didn’t want us seen together before his ballet, so for that debut (official premieres were on different days the following week), I had to substitute Linda Merrill for Allegra. Lots of drama that night because Farrell and her husband Paul Mejia resigned that same day. All in my book. There were a lot of misunderstandings surrounding that and I wanted to clear it up in my autobiography. The delicious irony is that Mejia’s son, Roman, is now one of the biggest lights of the company, and I’m a huge fan. He’s now dancing all my old roles…but better! @roman.julian.mejia @tilerpeck @georgebalanchinefoundation @georgebalanchinetrust @debramchase @sarahjessicaparker @stuarthcoleman @nycballet @alastair_macaulay_ #balanchine #ballet #maledancer

Suzanne Farrell: "Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet garned the usual bag of mixed reviews. When I was in a ballet, I was in no position to judge but [...] I was angry at the lukewarm receptions and told George one day, 'You know if I don't do anything else in my life, I'm going to prove to these people that this is a wonderful ballet.' Surprised by my anger, he replied calmly, 'Oh, dear, that's very sweet of you, but don't you worry about it. You can't be a one-woman army, and you can't charge the world in a day. We are on another cloud.' Despite the wise words, Brahms remained a real focal point in my life, another beautiful ballet added to my Balanchine crusade. I was determined to dance it so well that it would receive its due."—Holding on to the Air 1. Joseph Duell & Suzanne Farrell, 1985. 2. Robert Weiss & Christine Redpath, 1975. 3. I've been sitting on these beautiful multiple exposure photos of Dances at a Gathering for a couple years now, waiting for the ballet to go again so I could share them! _____ When Balanchine came in to view the pas de deux that Robbins had created for Patti and Eddie, Balanchine said, "Keep going." So Robbins chose more Chopin music and 12 dancers to fill out his cast (he had chosen Jacques d'Amboise and Melissa Hayden, but after a few rehearsals, they both declined to be in the ballet, so the cast became just 10). Choosing a title for the ballet proved challenging for Robbins. He said, "It was a hard title to find. I was going to say 'Dances: Chopin, In open Air', but that wasn’t the right title. 'Some Dances' is sort of flat. If you say '18 Dances' or '19 Dances', it divides them into compartments.” He settle on Dances at a Gathering which leads audiences to envision a picnic in the meadow, a walk in the woods, or stroll in the town square. The Gathering implies that the people know each other and have a shared past. Throughout the ballet we see different relationships develop or continue. We see friendship and romance and rivalry. 1. After being away from NYCB for a decade, working on various Broadway shows, Jerome Robbins returned home to the company after he received a letter from Lincoln Kirstein invited him back. The company had changed a lot since Robbins had left and he was nervous to come back. He decided to ease his way back in and have his first piece be a small pas de deux with two dancers he was already comfortable working with. Robbins chose Patricia McBride & Edward Villella. Eddie wrote: “I’ve known Jerry for years and years, but was never really close to him. It wasn’t until Dances at a Gathering that we really got close. Pat McBride and I were the first two people he worked with on Dances. I came early to rehearsal. I warmed up and I saw Jerry walk in. He was an absolute nervous wreck. I walked over to him and said how exciting it was for us to work with him. Inside of an hour, Jerry really got into it. He did most of our part in that first rehearsal. He’s a very slow worker. He tries to be verbal at times, but I think he’s much more successful in demonstrating.” For more information on this ballet, read today's post in the Vault at the link in my bio, or at immortaliconsofdance.com/vault. 1. Puck was one of my all-time favorite roles. Not too much actual dancing but loads of fun acting. I did it much differently than the original, Arthur Mitchell, with Balanchine’s blessing of course. I based my interpretation on Mickey Rooney’s from the great Max Reinhardt’s 1935 film. When I asked Balanchine if that was OK he was shocked I even knew this film. I reminded him, A. I was from Hollywood, and B. I was an actor long before I became a dancer. I noticed that after I left the company the next to do it, Jean Pierre Frohlich, used much of what I had added. This was subconscious of course, but I was pleased I had left my mark. JP wasn’t quite as zany as I was, but lots of my schtick was still there. When I wasn’t on as Oberon, I was on as Puck. Balanchine used to love showing us how he wanted the pantomime. He was quite a ham actually. I remember everything as if it were yesterday. My damn memory just won’t quit. He used to say I knew his ballets better than he did, and he alludes to this in the Bernard Taper biography. He also once told me that I love his ballets more than he did. Seems to be true. That’s why I see red when I see all the changes. They’re so unnecessary and only diminish his work. @anthony.m.huxley @roman.julian.mejia @nycballet @georgebalanchinetrust @debramchase @georgebalanchinefoundation @spappajohn13 @caroledharting @sjennings304 @stuarthcoleman @giadk #balanchine #nycballet #midsummernightsdream

George Balanchine’s fond memories of his childhood experiences performing with the Imperial Ballet in Russia inspired him to create a similar opportunity for SAB’s young students. Head over to our blog to read the latest #SAB90 post on the history of how several ballets in the New York City Ballet repertoire were choreographed to include students from the School, including the holiday classic GEORGE BALANCHINE'S THE NUTCRACKER®, MOZARTIANA, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and more. #LinkInBio @nycballet @nypl_lpa #FlashbackFriday #FBF #SAB90 #SAB90years #ballethistory #ballet #balanchine #SABhistory #SchoolofAmericanBallet #NYCB #NYCB75 #NewYorkCityBallet #dance #pointe #pointeshoes Image by Martha Swope New York City Ballet Production of "Mozartiana" with Suzanne Farrell and students from the School of American Ballet, choreography by George Balanchine, ©️The George Balanchine Trust. Jerome Robbins' Dances at a Gathering opens with a solo for the Brown Boy. Originally danced by Edward Villella, he recounted his conversation with Robbins that led to this solo. Robbins said, "I see something in you no one has used yet, but the music has to be just right. [...] I feel that there's a romantic side to you that people don't see because they don't look beyond your pyrotechnical ability, the physical, athletic feats you do, all your jumping and your speed. I'm going to try to express this romantic side in this dance. This variation is very introspective. It's as if you're looking inside of yourself." Eddie reflected: "I felt so emotional after dancing it that some nights I wanted to go home immediately it seemed as if I should leave the theater at once. Often it was hard for me to get back onstage for the rest of the ballet.” —Prodigal Son: Dancing for Balanchine in a World of Pain and Magic To read more about what Eddie had to say about this role, join the Vault (free for 7 days then $5/month) at immortaliconsofdance.com/vault or the click link in the bio. 1. Had a surprisingly large turnout for my 2:30 class today at STEPS. Surprising because it wasn’t the normal time for a new ballet class and I wasn’t subbing for anyone. Too bad I wasn’t able to teach a daily class at a good hour (I only had Sundays at 9:30 which admittedly is a little early), because I think I could grow a large steady clientele given a little time. Maybe I’ll try again someday. Would love to live in NYC full time again, and teach some old-school Balanchine technique. Since Balanchine himself had me regularly teach at SAB and even his company when he was unavailable, I do believe I’ve got a very good handle on passing on what he taught me. After all…that’s why he brought me to NYC in the first place. @stepsonbroadway @jovani.furlan @lanterijoe @roman.julian.mejia @mira_nadon @tilerpeck @anthony.m.huxley @therobyntodd @nikolajhubbe @josecmartinezofficial @susanjaffeofficial @sab_nyc @georgebalanchinefoundation @georgebalanchinetrust #balanchine #nycballet #ballet @stuarthcoleman @sarahjessicaparker

In Balanchine's Bourrée Fantasque, Maria Tallchief was the second movement ballerina. She wrote, "Increasingly, the roles George created for me were becoming more and more difficult. They called for pyrotechnical virtuosity and limitless stamina. But my material for Bourrée Fantasque was romantic and poetic. "A haunting, dreamy quality suffused the action. The choreography depicted man's eternal search for love and fulfillment. Nicky [Magallanes] and I entered from opposite sides and moved in a trance through a maze made by the corps de ballet until we found each other. Then we danced in slow, sustained movements and solemn pirouettes that expressed tender longing." —"Maria Tallchief: America's Prima Ballerina" 1. Maria Tallchief center 2. A piece of Ballet history! Tzigane costumes worn by Suzanne Farrell and Peter Martins in 1975 Originally titled Tzigane by Balanchine ( like Ravel’s score) the ballet has a new name today : Errante Written in programm : ""Tzigane did not strictly refer to the Roma people, but now it carries negative meanings " !?!? I don’t understand why Tzigane should be negative word? Anyway, Tzigane belongs to Farrell and Farrell was unique in Tzigane. May be also easier for the new generation to appear on stage with a new name : less weight on the shoulders . @mira_nadon gave such a nice interpretation ( coached by Suzanne Farrell) of the piece! A lot of character, fire and ice. In french we would say : Elle a du chien! … … #tzigane #errante #suzannefarrell #balanchine #newyorkcityballet #dance #ballet

After Suzanne's 6-year absence from NYCB, the first work Balanchine choreographed on her was Tzigane. The ballet was made in just 6 days during the hectic period of the company's Ravel Festival. Suzanne wrote: "The company was already full force into the festival when Balanchine, Gordon Boelzner, and I finally got together in a small rehearsal studio to begin Tzigane. [...] I had waited a long time to work with him again, and I wanted to prolong the experience beyond six days. [...] We began at the beginning, and he knew exactly how I would make my entrance--I was to mosey slowly onstage from the back left wing, no steps, no pointe work, no pirouettes, just a kind of sultry, draggy schlep. I was miffed. This was the first ballet George would make on me after six years, and my entrance did not appear to herald any great epiphany."—Holding on to the Air by Suzanne Farrell To read more of Suzanne's account of Tzigane and see more photos, visit the Vault at immortaliconsofdance.com/vault or click the link in the bio. The @nycballet Spring Season started tonight! So happy to be back at Koch Theater for the company's 75th anniversary. NYCB performed "Errante" with @mira_nadon and Aarón Sanz. Originally titled "Tzigane," after the name of Maurice Ravel’s score, the ballet was revived for the first time in more than 30 years with a new name. Balanchine choreographed the work for Suzanne Farrell for the 1975 Ravel Festival. Enjoyed the work; not sure why it dropped out of favor. . . #ballet #dance #balletphotography #balletphoto #balletphotos #dancephotography #dancephoto #dancephotos #newyorkcityballet #nycbspring2024 #lincolncenter #lincolncenter #nycb75 #balanchine #georgebalanchine #miranadon

SO excited to see “Errante” tonight (formerly known as “Tzigane”) along with three other Balanchine gems— “Bourrée Fantasque”, “Steadfast Tin Soldier”, and “Symphony in C”. My twin brother Kyle will join me and know we will be in hog heaven. The above picture is Suzanne Farrell, shot by Martha Swope (1975?). She is the originator and owner of the ballet, last seen at the NYCB at the 1993 Balanchine Celebration. Really looking forward to seeing Mira Nadon!! 🩰👏❤️💃🏼 #tzigane #errante #nycb #suzannefarrell #nycb #newyorkcityballet #balanchine #balletarchive #kurtfroman @nycballet @mira_nadon

Attn: Dance Enthusiasts 🩰 Auction Item Sneak Peek 👀 You can purchase a piece of ballet history in support of our 60th Anniversary Benefit Gala! This beautiful shadowbox display contains an autographed photo and original bodice worn by Wendy Whelan. The bodice is designed by Barbara Karinska, George Balanchine’s costume designer, for the snow corps in his production of The Nutcracker. Karinska and Balanchine collaborated together on 75 ballets, and he has been quoted attributing half of his success to her designs. The dimensions of the shadowbox are 16’’x27’’. Whelan was a beloved principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, performed with the company for 30 years, and toured in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Considered one of the most acclaimed dancers of her generation, @wendyw performed principal roles in more than 125 ballets with NYCB, dancing virtually all of the major Balanchine roles. She worked closely with Jerome Robbins on many of his works, and was also the dancer most choreographed on in @nycballet history, creating leading roles in more than 50 new works. Whelan retired from dancing in 2014, and in 2019 would go on to become the Associate Artistic Director of the New York City Ballet. 🖼️ FrameWorks Studio & Gallery, located in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, PA @fwsgallery Our online auction will be open for bidding next week. #wendywhelan #nycb #balanchine #ballerina #nutcracker
