This week I was down in Ho Chi Minh City finding some little tour extras! A very modern and slightly warm city 😅 Ho Chi Minh City was named after the famous leader, the city was formerly called Saigon until the Fall of Saigon in 1975 when Vietnam was united and claimed independence. I visited the famous Cafe Apartments for some incredible coffee as well as secret war time tunnels that were used in the 1968 Tet Offensive - Check out the ladder in the cupboard video as well as how weapons were hidden 👀 The war museum is a must and shows how the country was torn apart by war. The statue commemorates the monk Thích Quảng Đức who immolated himself at a busy crossroads in 1963. Aaron Bushnell’s action is part of a long and controversial history of self-immolation as political protest. In the past, self-immolation has been used as an extreme form of protest against political leaders in Tunisia during the Arab Spring, the Vietnam War, and climate change. And Bushnell isn’t the first to self-immolate in protest of the Israel-Hamas war. In December, an unidentified individual self-immolated outside of the Israeli consulate in Atlanta, in what police described as “likely an extreme act of political protest.” “It's an act of despair,” says Ralph Young, a history professor at Temple University. “You feel that there's nothing that you can do, or that people are willing to do, so this is the ultimate sacrifice—yourself.” The practice of self-immolation dates back centuries, according to ancient Hindu tales of Sati, the wife of a Hindu god who got married without her father’s approval. Some retellings of her life say that Sati burned herself to death on her husband’s funeral pyre, and are used as justification for the practice of ritual suicide that has long been banned in India. Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue Vietnam 🇻🇳. It sits on the banks of the perfume river and was built in 1601. Monks chant sutras dressed in golden robes. The car of the burning monk Thich Quang Duc is here. Then they cremated his remains and his heart still didn’t burn. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝘂𝗰 - 𝗔 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗸 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟭𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟯 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗻𝗮𝗺 After the historical and resounding victory of “Ha Noi - Dien Bien Phu in the air”, France was defeated and withdrew from Vietnam. Under the Geneva Accords in 1954, Vietnam temporarily separated into two regions with the demilitarized zone at the 17th parallel in Quang Tri province. In 1955, Ngo Dinh Diem became the first president in South Vietnam (Republic of Vietnam). During his reign, he favored Roman Catholic minority. The majority of positions in army and govermental units were assigned to Roman Catholics. Buddhists felt this would be unfair. A month before this historical protest, the situation became worse when buddhists in Hue city were banned from flying their flag in honor of the birth of Gautama Buddha. Those protesting against the ban were shooted by the government. And nine protesters were killed. On 11th June 1963, the protesting day, around 400 monks and nuns marched to the intersection carrying banners and protest against the government suppression of their faith and culture. Then, there was a car coming up with 3 monks getting out of it. One of them was Thich Quang Duc. He started to sit in the middle of the intersection in the lotus position on a cushion. Another monk who went with him poured gasoline over him. Thich Quang Duc burned himself by a match. The flames engulfed him, but he did not scream or cry out. His wish was to ask Ngo Dinh Diem for religious equality in Vietnam, especially for buddhists. Depsite his body being charred to ash, his heart remained unburnt and intact. No dia 11 de Junho de 1963, o monge Thich Quang Duc auto-imolou-se durante uma manifestação, em Saigão, como protesto contra a política religiosa do Governo que limitava a liberdade religiosa e discriminava os budistas.
