Smoked out the rights holder for this mad collection of songs by Agnes Bernelle- vaudevillian chansonnière and veteran of the old age cabaret. Dubbed ‘the strangest LP of the year’ by the NME, 𝘍𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘓𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘖𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 was produced in 1985 by Philip Chevron for Elvis Costello’s IMP record label. It’s 11 tracks were adapted from Bernelle’s translations of poems by Joachim Ringelnatz, Frank Wedekind, Klabund and Jacques Prevert; the resulting product an album of macabre show-tunes and sinister ballads of misfits, murderers, sailors, prostitutes and perverts. Bernelle was born to Jewish parents in 1920’s Berlin who fled Nazi Germany in 1936. Settling in London, Agnes joined the ‘Cabaret in Exile’; a collective of refugees and exiles made up of notable Jewish and Communist performers, who were gifted the Little Theatre in Hampstead by the Bishop of Chichester. After the breakout of WWII, she joined the American OSS as a radio propagandist masquerading as a jazz singer and disc jockey. Under the pseudonym ‘Vicky’, her broadcasts on Radio Atlantik sewed disinformation and chaos within the German forces (one incident resulting in the surrender of a U-boat captain, another inundating the Ministry of Health with urine samples after issuing a faux plea from Hitler to the German public). Following a prolific post-war career on stage and screen, Bernelle relocated to Dublin where she would continue to perform and record the works of Brecht, Kurt Weill, Marlene Deitrich and Hanns Eisler. Her Sprechgesang style and cult status as a representative of 1920’s Berlin theatre & cabaret brought reverence from artists such as Tom Waits and Marianne Faithful, and resulted in multiple record and book publications until her death in 1999, aged 75. @Demonmusicgroup have now published the digital masters for 𝘍𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘓𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘖𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 on Spotify & YouTube, for your audible displeasure. Books which changed the way I look at the world 8/8. Slaughterhouse 5 actually changed the way I look at the world through a magnificent Dutch adaptated play I saw before I read the book. I loved reading the Theban Plays so much. Antigone is gorgeously translated in this edition. I love BAAL, and I really liked what Brecht did to the Beggar's Opera by John Gay. Brave New World is a must read and it is interesting to see how the world develops after the having read this book. Washington Square was a novel of silent fortitude and I love the world and characters Henry James created in Washington Square. Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a novel which suckerpunched me. I love how bleak Hardy is, how hyper-realistic he is, and how critical, and with Far from the Madding Crowd, I love how hopeful Hardy is, before his career progresses and eventually falls dead in its tracks. The Sun Also Rises is definitely a novel I wouldn't have liked until March this year, but my mindset was a bit different in April and it's a brilliant novel. Dracula is a novel I love. April 1, 1933: "The Threepenny Opera," the famous Brecht-Weill musical adaptation of John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera," had its American premiere at the Garrick Theatre in Philadelphia. The cast included the singer Robert Chisholm as Macheath, Rex Weber as Mr. Peachum, Evelyn Beresford as Mrs. Peachum, Marjorie Dille as Jenny Diver, and the glamorous Hungarian actress Steffi Duna as Polly Peachum. The British actor Rex Evans played Tiger Brown of Scotland Yard, and George Heller (here called "the Legend Singer") sang the iconic introductory ballad "Mack the Knife." The future star actor Burgess Meredith played the small role of "Crooked Finger Jack." The critic Robert Reiss, writing in the liberal Philadelphia Record, said that Weill's score was "lilting and appealing," and that Brecht's dialogue was "brisk." Waiting… And recovering. They made it to @thepavilionsmileend for the @prismtextiles exhibition on time and dry! We travelled by train and bus. They kept quiet and stayed in their bags, gently folded and carefully tucked in. I was worrying to a friend about if I had to put plastic over their heads and she fixed with with a stern eye and said “Annie, they are dolls…” Yes. But. So here they are as I left them. Waiting for the hanging team to work their magic. There’s a lot of work. And given what I could see already, it’s going to be a brilliant exhibition with such varied work on show. Opens Friday. Spot the difference… Well, as I began stitching I realised how oddly shaped was the moon. Trying to de-egg it, made things worse, so it was out with the scissors. During the hunt the silver fabric landslide I found some midnight blue silky stuff. She is proving rather difficult to photograph, which is a bother, as one reason for these tiny pieces was to make some cards. Another in this particular series of little pieces. I was quite heavy handed with the freshly squeezed concentrated watercolour, and she has dried surprisingly dark - dense even might be the word. Subtle is not. That’s the moon 🌒 behind her. Waiting for a slither of light. I’m going to have to stick my arm into the fabric shelf where silver and gold scraps should be, and fish. I have cleared the floor space in front of the shelves (sort of) ready for the expected landslide. I’m muttering “little Jack Horner” to myself, and hoping for a suitable silver plumb. What else shall I do to lighten you? Or shall we go down the black velvet path and make you darker? Working on some tiny pieces. Turns out to be something of a “less is more” exercise, and, predictably, struggling with MORE. I think a line of stitch to define her arm and shoulder. I was intending to completely stitch her hair, but am shouting “leave it” to myself. Maybe just some pink flicks around the tips. If I had worked bigger in the first place, the stitching would then relatively appear smaller. Remind me, why am I working so small? Ah yes, that was the piece of calico to hand and the fabric shelf is at avalanche stage. I need to make space on the floor so the fabric-slide can happen with minimal casualties. Then I can put it away again later with a bit more order and fold and less shove and run. Meanwhile, tiny stitches. Or, use this photograph, find that printing fabric, print it bigger, stitch easier. Could do. They’re still not exactly talking to me. Yesterday as I was fleshing them out, I was given their names as Nina and Lena, in very strong accents. This morning they say Rosa and Lotte, in equally Dietrich-drenched tones. Very funny. I think they’re from London. I think they’re Home County girls who rolled their skirts shorter than anyone else and pierced their ears with sewing needles whilst never turning up for domestic science classes. I’ve told them this and left them doubled up with laughter while I make more tea. Their real names are - no, I’ll not tell you. I’ll keep their secrets. Last night at Her Majesty's Theatre checking out Three Penny Opera. Had a blast being a punter at the @adelaidefestival for a change; although it's very striking to think the themes of this piece, written almost 100 years ago, are still so relevant today.
