Review @kingfishrofficial @o2academybris 19/4 Abridged, in full on website In a night filled with musical talent, Kingfishr set the stage alight as the supporting act for Tom Walker. This Limerick based trio, comprised of former engineers turned musicians, showcased their remarkable journey from humble beginnings to sharing the biggest stages with renowned artists like Walker.  Drawing from their Irish roots, Kingfishr enchanted the audience with a fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds, skillfully weaving melodies with a combination of banjo, acoustic, and electric guitars. All members of the band - Edmond Keogh, Eoghan McGrath & Eoin Fitzgibbon - pride themselves on their independence by producing, writing and recording all of their music at their home studio.  For a setlist which only lasted around 30 minutes, it was hugely memorable and remarkable to witness. About halfway through their set, the band’s connection with their audience for the night was highlighted by a moment when each member ventured into the crowd, igniting a sense of intimacy between artist and listener which rarely occurs. The three-piece ensemble delivered a dynamic and captivating performance which left a lasting impression. Kingfishr are one of those hidden talents that are very few and far between in my opinion, as their sound and style of music is exquisite and I can see their music and fanbase growing in no time. Some of my new found favourites I recommend checking out include: ‘Shadow’, ‘Vancouver’, ‘Eyes Don’t Lie’ and Coward’ but honestly, I enjoyed everything I heard. I feel that their music would be a perfect addition to the score of a major motion picture one day. 📸📝 @danrose.uk

Review @iamtomwalker @o2academybris 19/4 Abridged, in full on the website. The vocal powerhouse that is Tom Walker brought the second date of his ‘I AM’ tour to Bristol’s O2 Academy on Friday 19th April and it was visibly clear how touched he was to have sold out the venue.  Accompanied by a talented four-piece band, Walker’s set was an audible feast for fans from start to finish. His audience consisted of a diverse mix of all ages, from older gig-goers with their children to younger fans, visibly illustrating that Tom’s style of music caters to a multitude of people.  Sporting his signature beanie hat throughout the show, Tom performed an array of ballads from his impeccable discography for over an hour and a half, surely giving the audience exceptional value for their money. Walker’s set showcased the deep devotion he has for his wife, despite the record label’s apparently playful suggestion to write less songs about her, a comment which elicited huge laughter from the crowd. I must admit that, apart from hearing Tom’s more publicly-played records, such as ‘Leave a Light On’ and ‘Just You And I’, I was completely unaware of how beautiful his obscurer tracks are. Thankfully, I discovered some great songs on the night that were phenomenally written as well as stunningly performed live. Walker’s dedication to his craft is undeniable, and his seemingly effortless delivery of a flawless performance left the audience wanting more. As he exited the stage, the crowd started chanting for him to sing “Leave a Light On” and the emotional connection with his audience was palpable the entire night. Part of the encore consisted of the outstanding single ‘Better Half of Me’, during which a fan proposed to their partner, adding an extra layer of emotion to an already unforgettable night. Lights illuminated the engagement in the crowd. Overall, the much-loved singer delivered what was undoubtedly a concert to remember. 📝📸 @danrose.uk

Review @elvisfrontednirvana @themarblefactory 19/4 “Here we are now, entertain us…” roared the capacity crowd at Marble Factory. And oh, entertained we were. Forty-eight hours later, there is still a buzz around the Bristol music community for what transpired on Friday night. It feels as though the city may have temporarily shifted to an alternative universe or been the victim of The Mandela Effect. Momentarily, we existed in a world where Nirvana was fronted by Elvis and somehow were filling arenas across the country by mashing up the likes of “Rape Me” and “Love Me Tender”. As Elvis gyrated his hips directly in front of me, I can honestly say I have had less surreal fever dreams. And the best bit? It was fooking epic! From start to finish, the band was delivering knockout punches. One-two combos of Elvis and Nirvana hits or a blend of both together. It truly has to be seen to be believed. The King was almost certainly spinning in his grave, but only because he was trying to break out of it to join in. And even Kurt would have been having a word with his dealer to get some of whatever Elvana were smoking. The band was so epically over with the crowd. Multiple punters dressed as Elvis starting mosh pits is a sight we won’t soon forget. And you haven’t seen a crowd lose their shit until you have seen a crowd lose it to a “Little Less Teen Spirit”, yeah you read that correctly. And just like the real Elvis might occasionally pop up working in the chip shop down the road, this multi-costume-changing Elvis was popping up all over the arena. One moment hanging over the top balcony, the next in the middle of the floor causing the whole ground to swarm around him. Are Elvana going to get a Grammy nomination anytime soon? No. Might Elvana be one of the best nights of live music you can have? Uh huh. One thing is for sure, they rocked our world and left us all shook up. 📸📝 @bristolnomad_gigphotography

Review @marisaandthemoths @themarblefactory 19/4 Friday was a special night. The poster may have said Elvana, but it was the other name on the bill that immediately made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up: Marisa And The Moths, finally playing in Bristol. A band whose self-titled debut album is one of my favorite albums of the past ten years, and a band responsible, more than any other, for getting me through lockdown with their constant live streams. MATM is a very special band to me, but one I’d never seen live until now. I was nervous, hoping Bristol would show the band why it needs to be a recurring stop on future tours. I needn’t have worried. Despite the very early stage time due to an early curfew at the venue, Bristol showed up. The Marble Factory floor filled as soon as the band stepped on stage. As the lights flickered and the first strains of “Needy” kicked in, the evening became lost to space and time. The power this band has to rip souls bare with their emotive lyrics and wall of grunge rock is unparalleled. It’s music at its most raw and emotionally charged. Finally hearing “Skin” and “Choke” live induced goosebumps on the skin and a lump in the throat. Enough for me to forget I was supposed to be shooting and simply sing along and be in the moment. Hearing three tracks from the debut album, with the sophomore album “What Doesn’t Kill You” set for release May 3rd was a truly special moment. Marisa is a paragon of power and poise in her performance with a vocal to rival any rockstar of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. It would be impossible to focus elsewhere if it were not for the immense talent of Liam on Bass, a swirling, whirling, bass-wielding Goliath, and Alez on lead guitar cutting rockstar silhouettes into the smoke. Alex on Drums completes a lineup to take the band into the promised land. That land will be within touching distance given the taste of the new crowd-funded album that the rest of the set provides. Bristol gets four of the album’s standouts with “Get It Off My Chest” and “Sad,” the perfect showcase for preordering the new record and joining MATM on their upcoming tour. 📸📝 @bristolnomad_gigphotography

Review @archives.nia in collaboration with @saveoursceneuk Abridged, in full on website. In Britain, live music is a cultural cornerstone, from grand festivals like those at Worthy Farm to small pub gigs. Despite its significance, grassroots music venues have faced a decade of decline, with 2023 being particularly devastating, witnessing 125 closures. But last Saturday, Nia Archives and Save Our Scene UK descended on Bristol, rallying 2,700 fans with a simple message: “SAVE OUR SCENE!” Nia Archives, a rising star in the jungle scene, has made waves by blending classic jungle with contemporary pop, culminating in her debut album “Silence is Loud.” Her impact was palpable as she kicked off her Bristol event in a newsagents-turned-music shop. The venue was adorned with flags and stocked with vinyl and CDs, promoting her album alongside the day’s events. A day prior, George Fleming, founder of Save Our Scene UK, announced a new fund with Music Venue Trust, ensuring that all proceeds go directly to struggling venues. The day’s festivities began even earlier for a select few, with a secret Nia Archives set in a Cotham backyard. Then, the main event: a seven-hour jungle celebration featuring artists like Artemis, DJ Flight, and Cheetah. Nia Archives took the stage to a roaring crowd, showcasing her eclectic mix of jungle tunes, from remixes of indie classics to her own hits like “Bad Gylaz” and “Mash Up Tha Dance.” The night continued with sets from SHERELLE and Clipz, ending at 2 am with the resounding call to “SAVE OUR SCENE!” This event wasn’t just about music; it was a statement about preserving our culture. Grassroots venues are the central to the music industry, nurturing new talent and providing a platform for artists to grow. Save Our Scene UK’s efforts are just the beginning of a grassroots revival, ensuring that venues like these continue to thrive 📝 @johntytennant_

Review @palomafaith @bristol_beacon Abridged, in full on website. On Monday evening, Paloma reopened her scars in typically grounded & honest fashion to the adoring throngs of a packed-out Bristol Beacon. Not one for doing things in half measures, Paloma effectively gave her fans two concerts for the price of one with the evening split into two halves . The first of her two sets was a soul-baring rendition of the new album, covering some 13 of its 17 tracks. From the moment the first note hit, everything was geared toward bringing the emotionally charged album to life in as visceral & visual way as possible. Arriving out of the shadows & stepping into the light, one of the UK’s finest vocalists of the past 16 years roared with feminine power. Looking resplendent in a stunning steam punk-style all-black dress that screamed both sadness & strength. “This Is How You Leave A Man” gave goosebumps to every soul in the venue. Like a phoenix rising from the flames, the darker melancholy moments gave way to light as the upbeat dance vibes of “Enjoy Yourself” & “Cry On The Dance Floor” reverberated around the hall & had everybody out of their seats dancing. If Set A was bathed in shadow, Set B was a kaleidoscope of color as Paloma dived headfirst into fandom, providing a greatest hits power blast that made the seating redundant & had the crowd dancing from the off. “Stone Cold Sober” was roared back at the stage as Paloma reached out to high-five those in the front row. The star, fizzing with effervescent charisma as she playfully interacted with her band, who were absolutely sublime from beginning to end. Constant cheers erupting as the crowd recognized the intros of the likes of “Upside Down” & “Can’t Rely On You”. The feel-good party atmosphere upped a further notch as summertime came early with “Lullaby” & “Changing”. Before the house was brought down with the traditional close-out hit “Only Love Can Hurt Like This”, the entire venue a sea of phone lights as the crowd sang in unison. It was a night full of tears, fears, smiles, hope, and Paloma reminding us that even when things are at their darkest, we should have FAITH. 📝📸 @bristolnomad_gigphotography

@gravytrainbristol N E W S H O W . Wed 5 June @strange_brew_briz. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ANTA (@anta_riffs) Loud, Visceral, Imposing, Vivid Riffs. ANTA formed in Bristol in 2010, becoming known for close-quarters, sweaty, energetic live shows of multi-layered riffs without pauses or breaks, wall of amps blasting the stratified interplay of guitar and organ, ponderous slabs of distorted bass, and weighty yet complex drumming. And there is a gong. “They might be in the progressive category, but this is a band that loves riffs more than flash virtuosity. My notes read “Van Der Graaf Sabbath”, but certain sections tonight would make even the likes of Electric Wizard proud.” - Joe Banks, The Quietus Stolen Body Records and ANTA announce an imminent new LP and further plans to come. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SANS FROID (@sansfroid.band) Budding progressive Art-Rock quartet from Bristol. “Dark and uncomfortable…somewhere between post-rock and alt-rock” - Backseat Mafia “Bristolian art-prog quartet stepping boldly into the future” - Noizze “Bold, beautiful and completely refreshing” - Circuit Sweet “Ominous and dark” - At The Barrier “Haunting, sprawling” - Bristol 24/7 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ BENZO QUEEN (@thebenzoqueen) ‘Horrible Punk with Synths’. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Tickets on sale now via Headfirst. #supportlivemusic #supportlivemusicvenues #bristolgigs #thebristolgigguide #bristoluk #bristolmusic #livemusic #livemusicvenue #bristollife #totalguidetobristol #giglife #tourlife #visitbristol #igersbristol #whatsonbristol

Review @thedeclanmckenna @bristol_beacon 9/4/24 Abridged, in full on the website A lively queue winds around the recently reopened Bristol Beacon, adorned in Brazil shirts and glimmers of glitter, unmistakably for Declan McKenna’s fan base. One devoted couple, with a noticeable contrast in Declan die-hard fandom between them, shared they’d queued since midday for prime standing spots, a testament to his magnetic pull. Former Dead Pretties frontman Jacob Slater’s new project, Wunderhorse, warmed up the crowd with six brilliant tunes from their upcoming second album. Although fan bases seemed distinct, Slater’s raw vocals and grungy guitar sounds won over even the most casual fans. Despite a stage design resembling jagged Antarctic icebergs, McKenna and his band wasted no time igniting the stage with ‘Sympathy.’ The 21-song set, featuring hits from his latest release ‘What Happened to The Beach?’ alongside classics, elicited visceral responses, showcasing the album’s quality. McKenna’s onstage dynamism prompted curiosity about his tour step count, as he playfully traversed the stage, juxtaposing candid lyricism with energetic performances of songs like ‘British Bombs’ and ‘Wobble,’ fostering a strong fan-artist connection and maintaining McKenna’s mystique. And of course, what’s a McKenna gig without a nod to Brazil? Shoulder rides, tears, and phones capturing moments ensued, yet didn’t diminish the unified euphoria his music evokes—a testament to McKenna’s prowess as a British indie icon. Overall, a phenomenal show. 📝 @1eo_mark5 📸 @adamjxphoto

Review @caitybaser @o2academybris 8/4/24 A pop princess has just thrown her tiara in the bin in a tantrum, ram-raided the castle, snatched the queen’s crown, and swung a baseball bat at anyone who dares to try and take it off her. Caity Baser is the pop queen the UK has been crying out for. Her reign will be punctuated by uber-catchy hits, a treasure trove of charisma, and a golden carriage full of sass. Caity Basler has to be one of the most natural performers we have seen in the history of this publication. We had a ticket to watch our loud, funny AF best mate mess about on stage for 90 minutes. Or at least that’s how Caity makes it feel. There is simply no barrier, no filter between performer and crowd. And the jam-packed, young crowd at Bristol’s O2 Academy couldn’t get enough. Touring her new album “Still Learning,” the Southampton-born star kicked off the night by smashing her way through a giant L plate and didn’t look back. The album may have only been out for a month, but the crowd sang every word of every track like they were revisiting their favorite album from yesteryear. And there in lies lil CB’s magic. Just like her personality, her songs are open and ultra-relatable to a demographic that already idolizes her, not that Caity seeks the idolization. After all, she simply describes herself as a girl that “Can balance spoons on my face.” The 18-strong set, which included pretty much the entirety of the new album, whizzed by in a blur of red and white. As Caity and her band set about chiseling their way into the hearts of everyone watching. And how refreshing to see a solo artist incorporate so much time for her talented stage compadres. The camaraderie between Caity and band a constant source of fun throughout the whole show. There were times when it felt as though Caity would quite happily have stopped the whole show and just spent the entire allocated time having a natter with the crowd about quite literally anything. This was an utterly charming performance, by an artist it’s impossible not to love. Thank you for injecting fun back into to music, Caity B. 📸📝 @bristolnomad_gigphotography

Review @underdogbristol THE FINAL 2024 There can be few nights in the Bristol music calendar that generate as much excitement and anticipation as the annual Underdog Battle Of The Bands Final. A staple of the Bristol scene over the past decade, the competition has grown to the point where every heat and the final sell out, with early birds for the final selling within seconds. After grueling, highly competitive, and intense heats, six bands earned their spot in the competition’s spiritual home, Thekla Bristol, on Sunday. Buried in Bermuda, Wildcat Boozy, Murderhobos, Mandragora, Toast, and The Cement Garden battled it out for the 2024 title. The iconic venue was packed from bow to stern as friends, family, and fans converged to roar and mosh their favorites to victory. As the eventual winners would declare in their acceptance speech, every band gave it their absolute best. Over three hours of circle pits, mosh pits, and walls of death (even a sword pit thanks to some inflatable cutlasses) rocked Thekla in its moorings. All six bands showed just why they’d won their heats, as well as the abundance of talent this city is producing at the moment. As the last notes faded, the tension palpably increased as the voting began among the 400-plus faithful. Thankfully, special guests Cobermouth were on hand to keep us all distracted until the counting was complete. In true We Need Bands style, the crowd, on tenterhooks, was initially Rickrolled by the organizers over the winner, to a room full of groans and belly laughs, before the actual winners were announced. To a rapturous reception, Murderhobos’ name was read aloud, and the trio made their way to the stage to collect their prize and bask in richly deserved glory. Murder Hobos took their place in the Underdog Hall of Fame alongside former winners such as Liquid State & Land Captains. We Need Bands & Underdog put everything into making this one of the best nights of the year, and create a competition whose kudos grows year on year. 📝📸 @bristolnomad_gigphotography
