On Sunday (28 April), we attended the fourth annual Young Company City performance at Bristol Old Vic, where St Anne’s Young people presented a theatre piece 🎭 They've been meeting every Wednesday since January at St Anne’s House to prepare. The event featured 11 other schools and groups, creating a lively atmosphere filled with Bristol talent and celebration! ✨ The drama was led by SAH Youth Producer Jack Young and Bristol Director Eli Lower, with nine young members contributing to writing, planning, and performing. It's been a fantastic project, witnessing enthusiastic young people come together to create something magical! _ Young Company City is a project which involves Bristol Old Vic practitioners delivering free weekly drama sessions to schools and community groups across Bristol. Young Company City aims to reach young people who have never been to Bristol Old Vic before or engaged in theatre or drama. 🏊♀️ A man’s body is found drifting in The Ponds, an apparently idyllic, female-only bathing space, hidden from sight by trees. Who he is, or how he got there is anyone’s guess. During the police investigation, the characters of the women who swim and work there are gradually revealed and we start to get a glimpse of what goes on behind the trees. Like The Ponds, it seems, the women are full of secrets and not so picturesque as they appear on the surface. Meet Ava Zarate, resident Ponds sound designer ✨ 🎤 Ava is a singer/producer who has composed ‘The Ponds’ soundtrack, completing the world of the play. She’s mixed sounds from nature with electronic synths and drums to create an ethereal atmosphere and tense pace. The sound provides texture for the play and moves the story along. The original final song draws the play to a close, made up of all of the sound effects you’ve heard throughout and lyrics that feature words from the play. 👀 Inspired by post-punk female groups, it’s a cathartic final note to end on. 🏊♀️ grab your tickets to listen to the full track tomorrow and Tuesday! Take a look at our original mural as part of our set design for ‘The Ponds’ last year and meet the artist behind the work: Daisy Day-Fawcett! ✨ 🎨 Daisy is an artist studying at City & Guild Art School. She’s been working incredibly hard behind the scenes since October, making not one but two different huge multi-panel murals for both our run at the Alma and The Wardrobe. Drawing from inspiration of folklore and traditional fairytale illustrations, Daisy combines new and old with beautiful detail and intricate design. Last year she hid dark images in UV paint under the picturesque scenes, which the characters unveiled with UV light throughout the play, ominously glowing in the background. Daisy has created a brand new mural for The Wardrobe, playing with size, perspective and colour this time around. 👀 🏊♀️ Come and see the beautiful work of art for yourself next week @thewardrobetheatre ! Artist Bobby Baker makes a very welcome return to Arnolfini this May with Drawing on a (Grand) Mother's Experience (DOGME). Originally intended as a one-off performance work to make sense of the first eight years of motherhood, Bobby Baker’s Drawing on a Mother’s Experience (1988) gained widespread critical acclaim. Baker, as a mother, uses a double bed sheet and various foodstuffs to poke fun at male artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, exploring themes of domesticity and the role of the artist. In 2015, Baker revisited the work with Drawing on a (Grand) Mother’s Experience (DOGME), updating the performance as a grandmother and feminist. This version was first performed at the WOW – Women of the World Festival in 2015.
