This is Headless Cross the 14th album by Black Sabbath. Since I’ve done reviews for the Ozzy and Dio eras of Black Sabbath and the long awaited Tony Martin box set was officially announced it’s about time I review a album from Tony Martin’s era. This albums style was a departure from their most well known sound of the Ozzy era and instead sees the band go in the direction of power metal which we have seen before in tracks on previous albums from the Dio days and in many ways this album is reminiscent of other Dio Black Sabbath albums like Heaven and hell. The album opens with Gates of hell which is an atmospheric “instrumental” and lives up to the name. This bursts straight into the tittle track Headless Cross which musically shares a couple similarities in the structure to Heaven and hell but has a bigger emphasis on keyboards giving the song its own identity and enhances the atmosphere. This and combined with Tony Martin’s soaring vocals and Cozy Powell’s pounding drumming it makes for an atmospheric and in some spots intense song. The power ballad on this album when death calls is a very emotional song and builds on itself structurally with the switch between distorted and clean guitars, the switch into the faster bridge into Brian May’s solo and Tony martins powerful showcase of emotion and range is what really sells this song for me. Some other strong points of this album are the rather upbeat Kill in the spirit world which switches into darker sounding riffs in the chorus. Call of the wild which has my favorite guitar lead and drum fill on the album and The epic album closer Nightwing which serves as the punctuation mark to wrap up such an epic album.
