I used a mix of Pilot brushpens, Marvy Uchida For Drawing pens, Sakura Pigma Micron pens and a white brush pen, but I cannot remember which brand it was, heh. Today we had the pleasure of seeing the incredible “Turning Heads” exhibition at @nationalgalleryofireland with @magsharnett guiding us sharing her wealth of knowledge. With works from the likes of Rembrandt, Ruebens and even Vemeer’s “Girl with a Red Hat” this is an exhibition well worth visiting. Learn what makes these pieces a Tronie. You see when art really began to become available for the upper middle class during the 17th century and more commercial around that time due to artists being able to create pieces of their choosing and not just commissions. You will see the playfulness in some pieces and then how other pieces were used or reflected in bigger works of art. Runs until 26th May. Los "tronies": la corriente artística neerlandesa de la fisonomía y la expresividad humanas. 🇪🇦 Los tronies eran retratos que buscaban hacer un estudio de la expresión. Pintores como Rembrandt o Van der Beeck fueron los precursores de la creación de este estilo pictórico durante el llamado "siglo de oro holandés", único en su género, que estuvo marcado por la representación de personajes, en la mayoría de los casos anónimos, que muestran una gestualidad y una expresión facial sumamente exageradas. Su término "tronie" proviene del galicismo trogne, palabra que se usaba en los Países Bajos para referirse al rostro de una persona. Estos retratos no pretendían ser tales, sino que en realidad lo que buscaban era ser un estudio de la expresión, algo que hacía hincapié en el aspecto fisionómico de figuras que el artista consideraba que tenían una personalidad interesante o peculiar, o que eran muy "retratables", constituyendo una suerte de ensayos artísticos encaminados a captar efectos lumínicos, claroscuros, tonos cromáticos... pero, sobre todo, gestos forzados. En ese tipo de obras, el artista, en un alarde de maestría, mostraba su capacidad para reflejar, a través de muecas y expresiones histriónicas de los protagonistas de sus obras, conceptos abstractos como la fuerza, la sabiduría, la locura e incluso la piedad. En cuanto a su temática, esta es, a menudo, de corte histórico, vistiendo a los personajes con atuendos que no eran propios de su época, vestimentas de corte exótico, o incluso la representación de personajes mitológico o bíblicos. Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII la pintura de tronies entró en decadencia, siendo el artista Michael Sweerts a quien se le atribuye una cierta revitalización de este estilo al influir en artistas como David Teniers el Joven o Johannes Vermeer. Probably my favorite from this year’s show ‘Vermeer’s Girl’, takes inspiration from the famous ‘Girl with a Peal Earring’, by Vermeer. If you have a look back at Vermeer’s iconic work, you can see how the stripes over the faces in my work mimics the head wrapping of the original… It’s argued the original from 1665 is a ‘tronie’ – an art term given to portraits that are not of a specific person, but a general type. In my work there’s two, one known and one unknown perhaps? The mirror self? The duality of digital life – the person and the avatar… Are our avatars really ‘tronies’ too – generalized beyond repair, studies in emotion? In 1628, Gerrit Dou was apprenticed to Rembrandt. Here Dou learned the art of chiaroscuro, the contrast of light and shade which became his speciality. Dou’s genre paintings also sold for high prices. The old lady in this painting is reading the bible. The book is rendered in such detail that it is easy to see what she is reading: the beginning of chapter 19 of the Gospel of Luke. The passage states that those who wish to do good must give away half of all they own to the poor. The old woman’s expensive clothing contrasts sharply with this message: she is still attached to worldly possessions. Bust of a Bearded Old Man is Rembrandt’s smallest (10.5 x 7 cm) known painting, and the only grisaille (monochromatic) tronie by the artist. Amazing to see Rembrandts vigorous brush strokes in this small delicate painting and the light that falls on the right side of the elderly man’s face and models. Rembrandt’s interest in depicting the physical and psychological character of aging men and women emerged very early when he was young and continued unabated throughout his life. He was clearly fascinated by their expressive physical qualities and underlying humanity. Because of its size and paper support, it may have been intended as a preparatory oil sketch, or model for an etching or engraving. The limited tones of blacks, whites, and grays in grisaille were beneficial for working out the design of a print, particularly in the depiction of light and shadow. Some scholars proposed that Rembrandt may have painted Bust of a Bearded Old Man for an album amicorum, or friendship album. They suggested that this context could explain the painting’s large signature and date, and paper support.
