Great news this afternoon for #roads in all over County #Roscommon. I have received word of a government allocation of €72.7 million for County Roscommon. This funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) will provide funding to Roscommon County Council. We will see Roads teams and contractors delivering on many projects across the county in the next while. The major investment of over €450 million for a 34 km stretch #Ballaghaderreen to #Scramogue road is testament to the importance of safety on our roads by this government. IT is also part of commitments under Project Ireland 2040 and balanced regional investment of roads funding across the country. Roscommon County Council and many councillors and my own colleague Cllr Liam Callaghan have advocated for this project and in spite of recent delays this project has started with €63 million allocated for 2024 and a timeline of 4 years. The #ActiveTravel funding allocation today of €895,000 for the towns on the #N5 will look at providing safe footpaths and cycleways #Frenchpark, #Strokestown, #Tulsk and #Rathcroghan for people and families walking and cycling. Other projects include improving road pavements with €1.4 million for Bellangare to Moneylea section. Funding has been approved for a road safety improvement scheme in Boyle. Significant funding and much needed to develop safe places for people to walk and cycle with close to €1 and half million for the major cycleway projects in County Roscommon. €900,000 is allocated to both sections on the Lough Ree Greenway from #Athlone to #Ballyleague on the Shannon and from #Ballyleague to #Tarmonbarry, #Strokestown and #Roosky. 🏅Bravery Award for Roscommon Teenager Callum Clarke, was fishing from a boat with his grandfather Sean, on Killina Lake near Tulsk on the evening of Thursday, 17th of September 2021. A freak gust of wind tipped Sean into the water and as he tried to surface the boat began to capsize. Callum rescued his grandfather and raised the alarm. On Friday last he was honoured with a silver medal at the Bravery Awards held at Farmleigh House in Dublin. The lone tree, Rathcroghan, Tulsk, County Roscommon. The upside of driving at a wedding is you get to try a bit of astrophotography on the way home. Stopped at Rathcroghan Car Park, which, when the traffic is quiet, gives excellent dark skies. This is a one shot image no stacking, the focus isnt perfect and I would of loved a wider lens to fit more of the night sky in. But I do love the sheer enormity of space that I think the photo shows. Went to Roscommon at the weekend to visit an old friend. Realised she lives 15 mins away from Rathcroghan, the centre of the Kings of Connaught. More importantly the home of Queen Maeve, The Tain, Cu Culainn, Oweynagcat (the cave of the cats which leads to the other world where the Sidhe live). Needless to say I jumped for joy. Did you know I have a Masters degree in Archaeology. But I can't call myself a Real archaeologist as my path took me elsewhere. But it aways gets my blood pumping. On our tour around we met a local man called Seamus feeding his son's horse with some hay on a pike. We asked for his photo as he reminded us of Kerry relatives. Had the most interesting 45 min chat and he told us there was a story that there was another cave system that runs all the way from Rathcroghan to Sligo. If you have never been to Sligo you should go. It's steeped in amazing ancient monuments with panoramic views similar to Rathcroghan. All the driving put my back out on Monday so I am recovering and planning some art in response to the amazing Rathroghan and the accompanying 250 other archaeological monuments in the area. A cave entrance set within the limestone landscape of Roscommon in Central Ireland … a cave that is known as Oweynagat, the Cave of the Cats. An entrance that became known as the Entrance to Hell, when the Christian Monks began their latinised mapping of Ireland … a linteled entrance leads you into a space (via your bottom) that displays a stone with an Ogham inscription, that talks of Fraoch, the son of Queen Maeve of Connacht. Maeve, whose landscape this is and whose image, that deprived opponents of two thirds of their valour, appears on the nearby visitor centre wall. A sharp turn leads you into the depths of the the cave, a cave from which three wild boars would roar out to rip up the landscape, a cave where The Morrigan, the goddess of War, would on All Hallows’ Eve, ride out on a one legged chestnut mare and a goddess who would take the form of a crow, one of which is on the tree outside as I type, waiting for a snack. Maeve of Connacht and the Morrigan … these goddesses from Ireland’s ancient past appeared to me, later that same week at Dublin Airport but they appeared in the guise of gimmicks in order to sell Skoda Cars! Ancient Landscapes, Ancient Tales that become tools of modern marketing …. Not sure what to say about that, but if it becomes a portal, like the cave, that introduces people to Ireland’s mythological past then maybe it is a good thing … and let’s be fair, the Morrigan would find a Skoda, a lot more reliable than a one legged mare.
