In this week’s KnotWork Storytelling episode, my guest Karina Tynan tells a story of sovereignty, or spellwork, and of our deepest entanglement with nature - bees, wolves, and horses play a magical role in the tale of Achtan and the lengths she went to protect her infant son, the future king, Cormac, son of Airt. Schon wieder Whisky-Friday 😊 Heute machen wir einen Ausflug an die Nord-Ostküste Schottlands, nach Tain. Der kleine Ort liegt ein paar Meilen nördlich von Inverness an der Küste zum Dornoch Firth. Und hier finden wir eine der weltbekanntesten Brennereien: Glenmorangie. Zurecht meines Erachtens, denn aus der Brennerei kommen wirklich großartige und auch erschwingliche Whiskys wie zum Beispiel der Quinta Ruban im Portweinfass gereift oder der Nectar d’Or mit Finish im Sauterness(Weißwein)-Fass. Gegründet wurde die Destillerie 1843 von John und William Matheson und der Name bedeutet so viel wie »Tal der tiefen Ruhe«. Es ist auch wirklich sehr idyllisch in der Region und ein Besuch lohnt sich. Die Brennereiführungen sind sehr professionell. Wir konnten damals spontan an einer Führung teilnehmen, die Wartezeit vertrieben wir uns im Shop, in einer kleinen Ausstellung und mit einem Einführungsfilm. Wir bekamen bei der Tour tolle Einblicke in die Produktion, die Pot-Stills durften wir damals allerdings leider nur von außen bestaunen. Tain liegt übrigens ganz nah bei Dornoch – ein Ort, der in „Vermisst in den Highlands“ eine wichtige Rolle spielt … Bei einem Besuch solltet ihr unbedingt auch noch Zeit für einen Spaziergang am nahen Strand einplanen mit Blick auf die Bucht und die Dornoch-Firth-Bridge, und auch eine Tour ins wenige Meilen entfernte Balintore machen, um die „Mermaid of the North“ zu besuchen. Die sitzt entspannt auf einem kleinen Felsen, dem „Clach Dubh“ (gälisch „schwarzer Felsen“), am Moray Firth und lächelt den Gästen entgegen . Die Skulptur gehört zum „Seaboard Sculpture Trail“ und wurde 2007 von Steve Hayward erstellt. Our Guest Karina Tynan, @irishmythsretold, is a psychotherapist and the author of two collections of Retellings from Irish Mythology: TÁIN : The Women’s Stories offers a new lens on great Irish epic, Táin Bó Cuailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley), and SÍDH : Stories from the Women in Irish Mythology, which are linked through the presence of the goddess in her many manifestations. Karina's interest in Irish mythology began almost 30 years ago through the Bard Summer School which commences each July on Clare Island, Co Mayo, Ireland. Each year the summer school explores an Irish myth for its contemporary relevance.
